Default What is and source for the dope used in covering?

I read about this being used but have never seen it for sale or have any idea if it has another name. Inform me.

Has it become a haz mat item and sources become limited?

We have been a Randolph paint dealer for years for the hobby industry. Unlike some of the major aircraft suppliers, we do NOT charge a hazmat fee on any of our paints! Just contact us by email at [email protected] or call 817-279-8045 and we will send you information and a color card.

You may want to try our other line of Poly Fiber products designed specifically for the modeler with the reducer and/or blush retarder already blended for convenience.

Remember, there are two types of dope; nitrate and butyrate. You can overcoat nitrate with butyrate but not the opposite. The butyrate is relatively fuel proof to fuels with nitro content, nitrate is not. Both are fuel proof for gasoline. Use nitrate for attaching the covering and fill coats. top coat with butyrate for the color and fuel proofing if using nitro based fuels.

Can clear butyrate dope be applied over painted surfaces to fuel proof the paint. Say the plane had a base covering of Monocote with some trim color of Rust Oelum paint and maybe a decal on the fuse side, could the total surface be clear coated?

Found this file on dope and its application but it is gear to full size and did not cover this question.

As long as the dope doesn't dissolve the paint and/or decals it would work - You'll need to do some tests on your materials and other paints. Not sure how dope reacts with latex. FWIW, I frequently print decals on a color printer, then apply and seal them with dope.

Alternately, you could use Nelson's hobby paint clearcote. Same effect but it's not as volatile a solvent as dope.
