Anyone have alternat thinner for Butyrate Dope?
I ran out of thinner for Butyrate clear dope and was wondering if I could use Laquer thinner such as sold by Home Depot? I reduce the clear dope by 50% and use this to apply light fiberglas cloth. I apply a quick coat. the idea is hold the cloth down and not saturate. I then apply laminating epoxy resin and squeegie thye excess out. You will be amazed how much epoxy is removed. Gives a light finish ready for primer.
Please let me know about the thinning agent.

Acrylic Laquer Thinner from an auto paint supplier works well to thin Butyrate Dope. If available , use the high gloss (slow drying) type.

I did this, just last week. It worked well.

I cover all my large aircraft with fabric and butyrate and use laquer thinner from Ace Hardware. Put about 10% in and mix then keep adding as needed if you put it in all at once it shocks the dope and is hard to mix.

How about nitrate dope? Can you still use laquer thinner? We have a hard time getting dope thinner because its considered "HazMat" and shippig costs ate high.

Automotive AcrylicLacquer thinner will work here, too.

Keep in mind not all acetones are equal. I recently covered a J3 with nitrate and thined with Lowes brand acetone, turned to cottage cheese pretty quick and there was no recovering from it. It was way too hot. Later I used Home Depot brand acetone, worked great. And you DO need to stir it a bit to get a good mix. Hadnt thought of Ace. Will try it next since thats the closest hardware store to me. I tried a laqure thinner and didnt have much luck with it, not as hot as Lowes acetone but hotter than the Home Depot acetone. It still turned a thick white goo.
The HD acetone worked great for applying koveral with stix-it. Thinned stix-it about 50/50, when dried, I used a small artist paint brush to just apply HD acetone on the perimeter and the koveral was stuck down with in seconds. Then came back later with the nitrate.
