Default Need Help on Masking for Paint

Hi Guys:
I need help on how to obtain symetrical patterns on the fuselage for prep to paint. I have done it, but it does not come out perfect. Always one side is a little bit different than the other. ,
What techniques or ideas do you use in masking.
Thanks in advance.

Hi cut my self some cardboard stencils to mark the pattern on the wing or fuselage. I just turn the pattern over for left or right side of the plane.

I tried the paper, but difficult to do. It would move around. I will try Jim's approach by using construction paper weight cardboard.
Thanks guys.
Good ideas.

crashlander, i found this stuff on the internet the other day, it is for making your own paint masks. I found it at a company called www.tcpglobal.com it is a custom painting supplier for custom painters.

I actually also used a combination of Hansa Stencil Paper, 3M fine masking tape (3mm wide),liquid masking film andconstructioncardboardand kraft paper. The liquid mask was used around the canopy area.

Part of the tricky masking on this paint scheme was the fact that the white on the wings came together to an apex with the white on the turtle deck. The bold white on the turtle deck continued past the lex on the side of the plane.

I buy stuff from tcpglobal. I can say their dura gold brand stuff surpasses equivalent 3M from experience. Customer support is excellent and their prices are hard to beat as well!

Wow.  I just checked out that website.  Their  price on a 3 gun HVLP set with press regulator and moisture filter is only 80 bucks.  That is a great price for what looks  like quality equipment.  I will be painting my Tiger 60 Deluxe  around  March.  I will be covering with Koverall fabric and filling with Minwax polycrylic.  It  takes a primer very well.  I painted my last plane with paint from my local auto parts store (they mix their own) and it came out very well.  But I was using a spray gun from Lowes that I also use to spray my entire house.  I did have to sand and re-do some areas due to runs from excessive paint from the gun.  I will definatly be going back to TCPGlobal when I am ready to buy in Feb.  Thanks for the heads up fellas.

Any sign shop will give you "transfer paper", all you have to do is go in and ask. They through out the short rolls, but there's still plenty left for models.

They will also give you left over vinyl, "scraps."

The template suggestion works well. With complicated layouts, one could do one side first, then make the template for the other.

"Pay for as little as possible." [sm=bananahead.gif]

Good luck
