There is a lot of interest in Club 40 Racing.

I'm creating this thread so that we have a common place to hang out, under a proper heading. I'm going to put a link to this thread on the Club 40 page so anyone can find the thread.

The World Models LA Racer 40 has been added to the approved planes list. So far, testing shows it to be effectively dead even with the Sky Raider Mach II. It may have a very slight advantage with the cowl, but I think the exposed servos on the wing equalize any advantage.

We may add a bushing engine spec to the Club 40 rules. Since some groups like to use the bushing engines to limit performance, we probably need to add it so that everyone can race under the Club 40 banner.

I will be updating the Club 40 section with race dates as they are announced. So post your race information here, or send me an email and I will add it to the schedule. If you are running a Club 40 race, check out the Club 40 Sponsorship page. Even if you are using "local" rules, but your event fits the Club 40 Objectives, hook up with RCPRO to get the most out of your event.

Club 40 gained two more fans today.

My 11 year old son Matthew flew the LA Racer on the buddy box a couple of flights and then went solo. This was his first "go where you poiint it" plane. He has flown the electric Typhoon 3D, but the speed is not comparable. He loves the LA Racer now. I've got to put his Sky Raider Mach II together so we can do a little racing. It will be cool having a practice partner.

My next door neighbor also flew the LA Racer. He liked the speed and the responsiveness. He is going to get one and then we will have 3 of us flying the 3 pole course on a regular basis.

I have 4 more on the way for the pylon promotional tour. Everything is shaping up nicely for that effort.

I feel like I've flown the wings off my LA racer in the last few weeks. Been showing it every where I go and every one likes it.

We've got 13 confirmed racers for the CLAMS (Canyon Lake) Club 40 race on the 9th of Sept. If any one is in the area of North San Antonio, TX. during that time, feel free to stop by!

We almost did fly the wing off of the LA Racer yesterday. Last night when I went to clean it up and take it apart, it only had one wing bolt in it. The other one had come completely out.

I know that the bolts were in tight. Because of problems with the Viper 500 having metal bolts into metal blind nuts, I am very careful anytime I'm not using nylon bolts.

We flew 7 or 8 times, and I have no idea when the screw came out.

I'm going to see if I can remove the blind nuts, and replace the screws with 1/4-20 nylon bolts.

This is a big plus for Club 40. I have had no problems getting people to try the Club 40 planes. Unlike V-tail Quickies, there is no intimidation factor.

Don and all.

Several of us have replaced the original bolts with #10 nylon. They did not break on cartwheel. Rick Storm has 6-32 nylon bolts in his. They keep the wing on just fine. (All force is toward the fuselage) On the occasional bad landing, or mishap, those bolts break nicely!!!

Yes, that was 6-32!!!!

We are still working out some details. The October 8 race was Sanctioned several months ago but will be run as sanctioned, no improvements to what we were doing 5 months ago.

Gf's race at Canyon Lake (CLAMS) on 9/9 will be more like what we want to do now. As he has written, there should be a very good turnout. More of you guys out there will make it better.

Maybe I will call Steve Kaluf and ask if we can make some small changes for October.

At San Antonio, we are talking about having a November race, as an experiment, with any airplane that might be comparable, no fees, no prizes, just fun. Still must be a .40 you would give up for $100.00!!!!

We had two 4*s at the field today, but they didn't fly. The owner of one tried to remove the igniter, while standing in front of it, whithout raising his hand over the invisible rotating knife. The owner of the other accompanied the bleeding man to the hospital. Not funny at all. Been there, done that.

Too much fun! Here's what's been going on regarding getting the Austin, TX club http://www.austinrc.org/ interested in RCPRO Club 40 racing: we presented the advantages of 2 pole short course racing with just 2 or 3 allowable planes (SkyRaider / LA Racer 40 / 4*40) and a short list of $85 or less motors. The Club Officers loved the idea of keeping the pilots off the course (as in 3 pole racing) and the low noise level offered by sport motors. We hyped the fact that we would do some "demo" flying on Sunday morning so they could see what fun this really is.

About a dozen ARCA club members came out to watch us and I know of three that have already ordered their plane(s). It was the first time most of them had ever seen 4 planes, evenly matched, trading leads during the "hot laps"...(wink) The most fun for me is seeing the excitement in someone's eyes that has never raced before and challenging other members even before they have flown one.

Here is the group that provided the entertainment and planted the seeds for future racing in Austin. Talk about a bunch of happy kids!

It was a blast flying with the ARCA guys. Very nice field and well maintained.
If Duda ever finds out where the pylons are he will be dangerous!! He did set a record though - most cuts in a heat!!

It would be great to have another field and group involved in club 40 racing. So far, nearly every one that has seen this form of racing has wanted in.

BTW - We had a radar gun on hand to answer the question of speed. We ranged from 62 mph for an LA .40 to a 90 mph average (up and down wind) for the TT pro.

10 intrepid pilots braved the threatening weather to have an absolute blast at the latest gathering of Sky Raider racers in San Antonio yesterday. We were joined by a few AMA racing pilots this time, and although they stole almost all the "Gold", we did make them work for it!

Ken and Bob will write the "official" report as usual in a few days, but I wanted to thank all the pilots that made this the most fun yet!

It is amazing how the times have come down for these racers. In the first race the average time was around 2:45 for 10 laps. The fast time at the first race was 2:36. Yesterday, the average time was around 1:45 and the fast time was 1:26!

Racing was super tight and the average margin of victory was measured in feet , and in several cases inches!

I also want to thank our volunteer judges. Without their help it would be impossible to hold these races.

Thanks again to every one that made this an interesting event.

Hey John - Great flying with you! What a great day!

Would you answer a couple questions for me?

What prop were you running? That seems to be the great debate around the water cooler - which prop is the best all around for these planes. What nitro were you running?

I know your fast time was a fluke but great job anyway!!!

The turnout for my "Pylon Party" on 9/16 was light, but we had a good time.

I want to thank Bill Johanson and James Barr for coming. The guests we had were impressed by the excellent show they put on.

I even got in on the act and flew the Club 40 planes several times with Bill and James.

My next door neighbor who bought the field thought the racing was cool. It was his first time seeing any form of R/C pylon racing. He says he's up for holding some actual Club 40 races here.

My wife Cindy and son Matthew really helped a lot. Matthew tended the "Portable Hobby Shop" and I expect sales from his efforts.

Thanks Don for the hospitality and good food.

This was my first time to fly the club 40 planes. Not as fast as the 424 planes and are not intended to be. Don had the planes ready for us to trim and try out the course. I made the first flight and had to add only a small amount of trim to get it flying straight. The TT40 was running very good. After about 5 laps, I had a problem. My legs were stinging very bad. Looking down, I saw a million fire ants all over my pants. I'm so glad Bill was standing there. I gave him the transmitter and proceded to slap, brush, hit and dance, while I got the ants off my legs. Got only about 25 stings. Of all places I had to pick to stand.

Bill and I made many flights some with Don included. We intentionally put him between us to give hime some first hand racing. Swapping positions many times. He did well and no planes were lost. The guys that did show up seemed to enjoy the show.

After our lunch, I broke out my Nelson 428 plane. Bill launched and I proceded to screw myself in the ground on the 400 foot course. After about 7 laps of that, I had had enough. Dizziness is not a good thing with a 428 plane. Shut her down and landed.

The club 40 has good potential. It would only take a couple of guys from a club to get the planes and start chasing each other. More exposure to clubs will certainly help. Don has a good idea and has put a lot of time and money into promoting it.

Once again - a fantastic day of flying for the 'Raider racers on Oct. 8! Any of you that want to have a great time without a lot of pressure need to join us for a race or two.

15 pilots this time. We add more every meet. Hopefully, Ken will have the full report ready soon as I did not write down names or heat winners.

Congrats to Jim Duda for taking the Gold in the "A" main. It was a very hard fought victory!

Here are the Raider and LA 40 drivers...2 of the entries were LA 40 birds. For the A main, the 4 pilots voted for a SIMULTANEOUS START...pretty cool to watch!

You'll find that if you boil the bolts before use they work better...not quite as brittle... Remember when we had to boil the old Top Flite Nylon Props?? Although you might WANT them brittle on the wing... I am just thinking about on landing gear.....
