gamecocks,

I had this plane with an OS 120AX which weighs about 28oz with the 90°muffler. With the DLE 30 your going to be about 10oz heavier plus the weight of the battery pack for the ignition.

I have an OS 160 on mine without balance issues. It weighs 32+ muffler which is I beleive is 9ozs more you wont be the first to put gas on the nose. Search threads about this plane and you should find105 pages of gas/glow/ele setups for this YAk

I have this combo and is a perfect match.
Did the maiden just this week and is very floaty. Almost like a foamy.
10 lbs. all up dry.

Dustin - I have the same airplane powered by a Saito 125GK with 10 oz. of weight in the nose to bring the airplane into balance. I had read in the blogs the airplane would be slightly underpowered with a Saito 125 if you intended to do 3D acrobatics. I find this to be true. However, the Saito 125 provides more than enough power for sport flying and most of your more traditional acrobatic maneuvers. BTW, I am not a skilled 3D flyer.

My guess is a 30cc gas engine is heavier than the Saito 125 and would probably put the plane in balance quite nicely without any or few trim weights. Personally, if you intend to do 3D acrobatics I would say a 30cc motor would be required. Though I have not made a side by side horsepower and torque comparison between the Saito 125 and a 30cc gasser I would assume a 30cc gasser provides considerably more power.

Separate and aside from the discussion above the Saito 125 fits nice under cowl (you need cutouts for the 4-stroke rocker arm covers) and the cowl is designed to provide good heat management ventilation.

I'd use the SAP 30 cc. Rear intake and rear exhaust make it about as compact as you can get. weights is 31.5 for engine, 3.5 for CDI module, 4 ozs for muffler. Also get the SAP IBE which eliminates the need for extra battery for CDI and gives you the option of arming the CDI with the TX.

I am using this engine in the much larger Extreme Flight Extra 300, 78" version, at around 12 pounds. It would be overkill for the smaller 90-120 model but hey, you won't have much weight penalty

I just purchased one of the Aero works Yak 54 and DLE 30 cc motor. Can you tell me if you used the DLE 30 with the side or rear mounted carburetor  to make it fit in the cowling.  It looks like the rear mounted carburetor will be about 3/4" too long.

You could either cut a hole in the firewall to accommodate the carb, or cut the engine box back and make it shorter.

True but I was hoping that a DLE 30 with a side mounted carbutetor would fit right in and the the person who sent in the picture could confirm or not.

DLE 30 Side carb is perfect fit but you need an additional 1/2 inch stand off to get the back plate to where manufacture wants it.

I used this 1/2 inch stand off from PSPMfg.com.
http://www.pspmfg.com/RCStandOffsMotorSpacers.html

BTW, no additional dead weight needed. The DLE balances the plane very well and has plenty of power to pull out of hover if 3D is your thing .

That's good news, I have a few more questions if you don't mind.

1-where did you mount the ignition?
2-it looks like you have a Pitts muffler on yours, did it fit ok?
3-Did you need to move the fuel tank?

Thanks for your help!!!

3: I got a dubro tank because of the gas compatible fuel stopper and moved it back next to the wing tube to try to keep proper CG through the flight.
1: That left me with putting the ignition on top of the motor box under the cowl.
2:I had to cut the bottom pretty good but the JTec muffler sounds really nice and worth it. Actually I think the stock muffler would have needed a lot more "visible" cutting. Meaning the stock muffler would have needed the side of the cowl cut and the pitts only needed the bottom cut. It worked out because this engine now has plenty of airflow and you only see when in hover or knife edge.

I'm using Xoar 18x8 and 19x6. As it is I had to remove the wheel pants and put bigger wheels on to keep from breaking props . If I had a paved runway I'd like to try a 20x6.
Other guys on other forums think that the 20x6 is the magic number for 3D w/ the DLE30 on this size plane.

The pics are a few pages back from the last.

BTW, My cowl opening is way smaller than the one in those pics.
My opening goes around the head and back just to clear the stingers.

Is that because you use the JTec muffler?  Do you have any picture you can post of the underside?

Just took a pic but can't upload with the iphone.
Have to wait till the wife is done playing games on the computer.

After looking at it again, it is about as wide as the muffler because of the muffler.
I'll post the pic in a little while.

Would the DLE-20 work in this plane? I'm looking for basic pattern flying not crazy 3D stuff.

According to Aero Works the 20 cc and the 1.20 glow is too small for that plane for 3D maneuvers.  I think that a 20 cc would be fine if you're planning a pattern ship.  Have you looked at the 26 cc engines, they should have plenty of power for both and would most likely fit better.

I definitely looking for a pattern ship. If I need to upgrade to a 30cc later for 3D that's fine. I just want to be sure that 20cc is enough for inside\outside loops, inverted flight, knife edge, etc. I have no intention of hanging on the prop or doing crazy 3D stuff with it. Has any seen a 20cc in this plane here or on another site?
