I have finally "hit the wall" so to speak and I'm reaching out to my fellow New Bright modifiers. I have recently came into possesion (froma helpful source)of the 2 gears that I need to make the 4th gear modification but I am having trouble installing them. I have been seriously swamped these past few weeks with my wife in the hospital, a new baby in the house and working nonstop plus grandparents in and out at any given moment. Please, have mercy on me, I want to get them installed but I need your help to do it. I will be willing to send my axles and motors to you along with the gears I need installed. Just PM me with your information and I can send them to you, if you have the time and knowledge, as well as the price you quote me for the install. Thank you

Creepy Crawler ..

The installation of the 4 th gears, is not that hard ..

You put the new gear, following the three others,

you lift the motor,

and also, you can lower the pinion 10 to 8 tooth .

. I can not do the work for you, but I can help you if you need advice ..

I give you a few pics of my installation, and the COBRA 69 .. and other member ..

After my cry for help, Texx posted some helpful photo's that "got my gears turning". I figured I'd take a stab at this 4th gear mod and try my hand at it. I used coat hanger wire that I bent to shape for the 46x14 gear and hot glued it into place. I used an electrical outlet box from lowes as my motor mount and some 6-32 by 1 1/4 bolts to elevate it above the 4th gear. I installed a 9 tooth pinion and hot glued the motor inplace on the motor mount. I know it looks crude, but hey it works. I also installed some silver cans that I picked up from Radio Shack, but not really sure how good they are going to hold up. I just need to button up the rear axle and throw some grease on the gears and take it for a test spin.

So much for that. Those POS motors from radio shack were a waste of my money. I got everything back together and didn't even make it outside. Smoke, more smoke and a straining motors. I'm putting the stock ones back on this week sometime.

I just picked up a newbright 1:10 scale Corvette from the local flea market.  I am yet to take it apart but am hoping for at least one 4th gear I can use for a mod of my newbright jeep.  Anyone taken one of these apart already and know what is inside that axle?[:-]

Hey Texx, if you get a second check out this link, is that the 8 tooth pinion I need to replace the stock 10 tooth one on my newbright jeep? A plastic one will suffice correct, no need for anything fancy? Thanks

Why would you shave the bottom of the axles as mentioned above? Also, after doing the 4 th gear mod, does the axle itself have to be shaved/cut or altered to fit the motor after it has been re-mounted?
Thanks

Do not forget, it takes 2 similar gear, one in each differential

( 1 )

The differential does not rub on the rock .. It will be easier on the rock

( 2 )

YES ..

The motor is installed higher up, so it will cut the plastic differentials somewhat ..

Does anyone have detailed pics of their 4 th gear mod mounting and their motor mount job? I am sure i don't want to glue it in too well if I ever need to get the motor back out...

Took apart the rear axle on my "new" old Newbright Corvette and low and behold i found a 36x10 gear, as well as what looks to be a 280 motor with a 9 tooth pinion.  So everyone looking for gears to do a 4 th gear mod, keep an eye out for a newbright corvette 10th scale.  When I was testing it, front wheels/servo turned but drive motor did nothing. I checked the plug and it is plugged all the way in.  Have to use my power tester next to see if motor is getting juice and is dead or not getting power.  So can I install my new gear into my rear axle for now to help out with the lack of torque and leave the front axle alone or will that goof everything up?

You will need to obtain two 4 th gear (not necessarily of 34x10) and two pinions like 8-tooth ..

and that everything fits well ..

If you install the 4th gear in only the rear axle it will have more torque & less wheel speed than the front.
Front & rear tires will turn at different speeds.
I would wait for 2 gears before doing the mod.

BTW...If you do find 2 36x10 gears...the stock motors & pinions will provide plenty of torque for crawling.

Thanks much as usual guys. All the help is greatly appreciated, I will wait until I find a second gear to do the mod. So what of the pinion and getting it off the motor, is the corvette motor not like others? Will the ones on the motors of my NB crawler come off easily? Thanks again

Once the open differential, the gear and motors are easily removed ..

As I already said, you should find two gears by approximately 34 x 10,

and also two pinions that engage well on the 4 th gear and also on the shaft of the motor ..

Then just install them ..

The cover of plastic, will be cut, the motor is installed higher up ..

I just got one of these for my son. I made a skid plate like Creepy Crawler ( thanks for that). Now I want to change the suspension and the tires and rims any suggestions?

We have one of these FJs and since my boys got Stampedes for Xmas, I've sort of inherited it.  Some where around here I thought I read that 2.2 tires would fit these rims.  They most certainly do not.  Does anyone know what tires might fit?  Also, would these motors work:
