RE: New Bright Jeep Crawler
So, the gears are not something to hop into lightly. It took me a LOT of time, calculations, and some CAD drawing to come up with the 96:1 gear set. It is not just one gear swap. The 70:1 was just one gear change, which had to be made from a new gear, and the center of one of the NB original gears (and 8 tooth pinion swap).
The 96:1 setup fit like stock, but requires 2 custom gears cut and pieced together with other gears. I made some fixtures on my lathe to make the process go easier, but it is still a challenge to make a set.
I used a 60 tooth RC18 gear to make the 70:1 set, with a 48pitch 8 tooth pinion from a helicopter. The 96:1 gears required the same spur gear, but an 8 tooth, and 36 (I think) tooth 32 pitch gears from a robotics company.
Getting the gears to hold together, as well as be assembled perfectly lined up, is the hardest part. The reward is awesome power that fits like the original gears.
