Default Traxxas T-Maxx Roll cage What do U think?

Hi,
This is our first (I hope not the last) roll cage for the T-maxx. Made from 6mm outside /4mm inside STAINLESS SEEL TUBE!!!
Welded with TIG weld. Sits on springs to make less damage from bad roll lol. Still have acces to do things underneath.
NOT BEEN PAINTED! This is the steel itself.
Weight: 256gramms only

Please tell me what U think. I hope we can make some tests and record with camera, that goes on youtube. I'll let U know.

Thanks for looking

Stainless is not that strong. I would make another form regular steel, find a way to make it lighter, and ditch the springs and use a different mounting system. Also how you support the tube makes a big difference. Play with your design and do some impact testing.

First I'll test this how it is. This tube is much stronger then the mild steel.

I don't wana use plastick body shell whenn this is on. I thinking some fabrik "clothing" to protect from dust but this is just plan yet.

I say build a second and test it. Drop about thirteen pounds on the second test cage from about eight feet in the air, see how it holds.

I think the 6.5 kgs from 2.4 meters a bit too much to test. It isn't made for protect the car from FULLSPEED WALL CRASH. I think the car abot a half of this weight an U not really jump to 2.4 meters with...
Anyway. I might do it to see what the reaction is. But wont do with the car hjust with the cage. With the car I think do better anyway, because the springs on the cage and on the car as well....

Here is a thread with various roll cages. Take a look and see how others are building them.

do you plan on trying to sell cages?
if so you may want to plan on what heights other may be jumping.
the heights i have seen some jump (close to 25-30 feet in the air), that won't take a lid landing of that calibre.
just sayin'

Tmaxxes weigh ~ 12-13 pounds, and most people that jump them do so from an average of about eight feet. Therefore, dropping thirteen pounds on a test cage from eight feet is a suitable test of what might actually happen to the cage should the truck land upsidedown from an actual jump.

It would but I wouldn't want to crash test an actual truck in case the cage doesn't hold. Dropping from eight feet upsidedown will most certainly break an unprotected Tmaxx. That's why I suggested dropping something that weighs about the same on an unmounted cage.

The only think about this is the springs. 4on the cage and 8 on the truck. Without the truck non of the springs works thats all. With the truck all 12 springs take some off from the power...

I doubt those springs are going to do much at all. Besides just testing the drop of gravity is a bit lighter than what an actual crash from that height would have because that drop wouldn't factor in forward momentum as well.

Spring mounts work as long as they are mounted to something very strong. If not the springs could possibly break the mount. I like how my HBZ cage mounts to the bumper mounts. If they break its no big deal and they will probably last long enough to help the truck survive. Mounting to the shock towers could be bad because if they break shocks and bulkheads may be affected. I would at least go to the chassis rather than the shock towers.

Not trying to completely change your design. Just trying to offer ideas. Most people avoid cages so weight and strength are key.

Thas why I think the 256gramms is not too much at all.
