Watercooled Tmaxx
well, a while back if anyone remembers i put up and did the mattracks conversion for my tmaxx, now im pondering a watercooling setup using a small pump/radiator and a marine head, gimme some feed back on what ya'll might think if i can make this work to a point where the lil engine'll never overheat =3

Well one thing that does come to mind is, what will ya do for the water supply, and how will u make it so that it doesnt overheat once the water supply runs out(it it can run out possibly i mean).....

if you want to drop the time and money into it
i've seen it done once or twice
so it has been done before
will it ever overheat?
probably
unless you put a huge radiator on it
and the engine runs perfectly all the time
but all you'll really be doing is adding a lot of weight
a lot of bulk and a lot of complexity
for zero gain
so
unless it's just for the
"because i can" factor
why bother?

that won't be an issue
my boats constantly use fresh water and they don't run too cool
this will have to be a closed system
so it will have a problem getting the water temps down
and keeping them down
anyway

well the biggest reason is for the "nitro crawler" scene so they can do there crawling without overheating the engine's and it should add too much weight, i never really though of it going into race trucks, just bashers who don't always get to run it full throttle or fast enough to cool the motor down quickly.
i was thinking of a tank with enclosed pump thats hooked to a small thermal switch attached to the head of the engine and with al il trial and error set it for about 270 as the cut on temp for small fan on the radiator and about 250 for the cut-off. this would also allow people to run with uncut bodies on there trucks if they wanted to

i was thinkin of 2 5-7v fans on the radiator to cool the water down, plus fresh air comming in would cool it down just like a full size car's does

yeah, i think it will be heavier than you think

not trying to discourage you
just being realistic
about some of the obstacles
you'll hit

I have tested out a electric cooling fan on my savage x before, it worked so well that I dont see a need to use a water system for cooling. My fan was light weight and controlable comparied to the water route. I am not familar with the set on the engine your running, so enlighten me on that part.

O and for crawling or low speed full throttle messing around, I found the fan to be extremely successful on nitro engines. The best part was you can dial in your temp by fan speed. You can either run off your existing rx pack with minimal amp draw and low weight, or run off a separate AAA rechargeable pack of 2 to 4 batterys. Either way, I could control the fan speed to get the temp I was looking for due to weather, tunning, or how hard you push your truck at low speeds. If your interested let me know, it works. Its almost like installing different size cooling heads on top of your motor instantly at a touch of a dial or battery removal or install to dial in your temp were you want it.

i`d go with a internal air system...lol
like a 50mm fan that ran about 29-4000RPM and around 10-40CFM
that would cool it fin...think about it a CPU will get hotter then 200(if a fan goes out and it doesnt blow up)
and the heatsink+ a fan keep it under 110[X(]
and as long as you get some fresh air and not warm recycled air it will cool more effectively then water...
Granted come Lan guys go with a water cooled system but for an RC its just unpractical,if it was like a 1/5th or bigger Maybe..

*shrug* a lot of people said the mattrack conversion wouldn't work and i proved that one easily done and cheaply (under 20bucks) though i need to get a new engine n pop em on again for a new video with audio this time and a better camera as my old one blew chunks hard core. i may try it who knows =D

what you do is get some small tubing and wrap it around the cooling head and get a resivior with freezing cold salt water salution and just have it keep on recirculating and it should stay cold for a long while and get a micro pump

It needs to be pressurised to work, or a fan is better, if it can be pressurised it will work no problems, a water cooling system is heavy though, and a thermo fan is light, for the % of cooling the fan pwns, look at CPU industry, see how much heat a fan can remove, its almost as good as water cooling and far lighter and way more energy efficient, something that counts on small light weight RC cars.

Before I even tried the fan route, I was not sure how it would turn out, but it worked great for me. Nitro motors are already set up to cool off air, the fan just fell right into place. I know it would be a nice touch to make up something so elaborite like a water cooled system and all, but if you try the fan you will see its not even worth the hassle to make a water cooled system.

i wanna try the watercooling just for the hell of it =3 if it dun work oh well, btw how does the marine head work anyway? does it act like a pump itself or is the water pushed through it via the prop?

Water get pushed through it by the force of the water while running. Thats why boats will overheat when sitting at idle because theres no water going through it
