Need a new T-maxx engine, 2.5R or 3.3? or Sportwerks .26 V2
Ok, I got a couple T-maxx's in a trade, and one is crashed with no engine (well, it has a seized TRX .15) So I'm going to put it back together, but not sure how to go on the engine.... I was thinking of doing the traxxas engine replacement plan... I can get a 2.5R for $85, or a 3.3 for $110... is the 3.3 worth the extra $25? Will I NEED an extended chassis for it or any other upgrades? Which is easier to tune? Or is there another engine in the same price range ($85-$110, definitely not more than $110) thats better?

RE: Need a new T-maxx engine, 2.5R or 3.3?
I dont know i think i would go with the 2.5R just for the simple fact that i dont know if the stock drive shafts will handle the 3.3. I have had a 2.5R and yes the 3.3 is faster but it also depends on what you want to do with the truck, basher, race, or just to pass time. Does this truck still have the plastic shafts all around on the wheels. Cause if so i would go for the 2.5R just for the fact that you might have to spend some extra cash on upgrading your drive shafts. But that is just my opinion. If it has upgraded drive shafts then go for the 3.3. They are both great engines and will perform great with the right tune and setup.

RE: Need a new T-maxx engine, 2.5R or 3.3?
Well, its got the old narrow arms, and I plan to upgrade to the widemaxx arms (RPM) Will the original (non-widemaxx) driveshafts work with the wider arms? Because if not Ill have to uprgade those too.... Do the driveshafts for the 3.3 cost much more than the ones for the 2.5r?
As for what I plan to do, just bashing... The other tmaxx has a hyper .21 in it. They will be bashing together (not each other ).... but i dont neccissarily need the new engine to keep up with the .21....
Basicaly, I want to do this as cheaply as possible, but if the 3.3 will work without a bunch of modifications and extra parts, i'd rather go with that.... New driveshafts I can handle, I can get the t-maxx 3.3 shafts off ebay for $20, but I want this truck to be reliable, so if the 3.3 is going to be breaking expensive parts, I'll go with the 2.5..... Other than the driveshafts, what else is beefier on the 3.3 than the 2.5?
Oh yea, and the chassis I will be using is an extended chassis.... The stock one was broken, and a buddy gave me one, thats about 1.75" longer than the stock one...

Well since you are getting the extended chassis that is a plus already. You will have to buy new cvd's and drive shafts if i am not mistaken. but since that i would say go with the 3.3 and get the shafts off of ebay and then all you need to get is the cvd for the center then you will be set. If i am wrong somebody please correct me but with the longer chassis he will need to get new center drive shafts right?

+1!!! the 3.3 is one heck of a powerhouse for a stock engine; and while it may be a powerhouse, its not too "over powerful"(at least it seems to be that way to me)

well yes this is true Matt... BUT keep in mind, MY situation, and the WEIGHT of the vehicle that it is IN...
I'm sure in a Revo, it is the perfect engine, but the vehicle that I have the 3.3, it might be a tad too much. Maybe I need new tires or something...? I dunno...

RE: Need a new T-maxx engine, 2.5R or 3.3?
Well, I guess one advantage of the 3.3, is that even if i tune it kinda rich and use 10-20% nitro, it will still have more power than a perfectly tuned 2.5 on 30%....
As for getting a more expensive O.S. Well, not only is it not in the budget, but I really dont see the need for it for my purposes... Back in the day before the widemaxx was even though of I had a TRX .15 T-maxx, and even that had plenty of power for me... I dont ever plan to race, plus the other t-maxx I got in the deal with the broken one has a .21 in it.....

Here is another motor I am considering..... Sportwerks .26 V2 http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...oducts_id/7458 Its not much more... But I have only just heard of it, so have no idea if its an ok engine or not... its says its the stock engine in a losi LST.... So it cant be too bad can it? Anyone have one or know someone that does?

It depends on what u're looking or. I hear a lot of horror stories about the 3.3 although I've never had one, altho I once drove my friend's Jato with the 3.3 and it was amazing. If you want to put the V2 in it, you will have to get a big block chassis and mount which costs a lot more than the O.S. .18 if you buy it as a kit. You can buy an extended chassis off ebay for about $20 and then you have to buy the engine mount for the big block and the engine itself. If you do decide to go for the V2 I think u'll be very happy with it.

well the chassis i have is actualy a hardcore racing .21 conversion so its extended and came with a big block mount.. not a problem there.
Honestly i'm not looking to get the most performance, thats just a bonus, I know that either engine will have plenty of power. maybe too much power... I really just want the engine thats the most reliable and easy to tune... But cant afford to spend a lot of money...

OK...like I said I think u'll like the V2. A friend of mine had one in his Sportwerks buggy and I was very impressed that I think I'll buy one in the future for my on-road car. Definitely can't beat that price either. I think it'll definitely blow away a stock Savage .26 because of the much higher 42,500 top RPMs also. If you put the highest clutchbell and lowest spur gear that T-Maxx will real haul some butt. I have a 24 tooth CB and 64 tooth SG on my S-Maxx and I love the speed, but I also had to get axle extenders because it kept flipping over when I tried to turn at the higher speeds.

All right guys, thanks for all the input! I have decided an an engine... Im going with an Axial .28 1S.... I know it wasnt even one of my choices [sm=red_smile.gif] but ive done a lot of reading, and it looks like a really good engine. Easy break in, lots of low end. exactly what im looking for.... plus it doesn't hurt that the head is my favorite color and its $120

Altho you'll have more torque than the V2 with the Axial, you'll lose over 7,000 top RPMs.
