the rod for both is the same. These engines tend to split rods when they are run lean. I had a 3.3 that would run great and overheat... my solution to this was tune to absolute max performance then richen 1/3 turn for smoke... temps stayed under 280[8D]

I have had this happen before, but only with the 3.3 engines. I took a new conrod to a machine shop and had one made that was much better quality, and much stronger and costs less than the TRX replacement.

^ Howd you manage that? I mean, you'd be taking a new Traxxas rod to the machine shop, with them removing material from it if they were machining it, making it weaker. Curious [8D]

He took the TRX rod to the shop and had one made like it...only beefier.
Its a common issue with the 3.3 to split the conrod. Some last many many gallons others split during break-in. Too lean or too rich of a tune can lead to rod failure.

Ah thats what I was thinking, whoops I missed that in your post . How much did it run you, I'm surprised it was cheaper than stock!

^^ Haha, it always does . Can't wait to make R/C related parts on a drill press already.. Been working with lathes since college started and its pretty awesome, also helps that I'm 2X faster than the rest of my class

This happened to me this past weekend...
Got lucky, though. Absolutely nothing else was broken...piston is good to go, crank and crank case OK, not even a scratch on the sleeve...guess I got a little lucky.

My buddy had a 2.5 on a Rustler that did the same thing as the above photo, but his punched a hole through the crankcase.
His driving "style" is horrific, W.O.T. for extended periods of time, and running as lean as possible for max power.
That seems to be the formula for Traxxas rod destruction.

RE: traxxas 3.3 conrod split in half
ive had 3 connecting rods break lately one of them punched a hole in the crank case and the one of them ripped the wrist pin almost of the piston and the other one blowed the side of the piston. they gotta solve this problem. all of these was in different motors
