Default signs of bad clutch shoes

What are the signs ?
I took my S maxx out today and noticed the wheels would not stop spinning regardless if adjusted the throttle trim or not; I checked everything else like the carb opening (1mm) and when I open the (carb) throttle and release the trigger seems to be working properly.
The clutch shoes have in between 3/4 and 1 gallon of fuel same with the engine

Broken clutch spring and/or shoe(s). Possible bad clutch bell bearings.

It has to be the clutch shoes although I have not taken the engine off of the truck yet I will do that tomorrow and I have one more question for you guys.
How long does it take before you have to replace the plastic clutch shoes (stock) that traxxas sells as far as gallons of fuel; and what is a good brand of clutch shoes(aluminum) that will last longer than the stock plastic ones?
