T-Maxx Steering servo
 

Admittedly, I am new to the hobby and don't want to flame my own new truck, but the steering servo on this thing is junk. The 2055, older not digital, servo can barely turn the wheels sitting on a smooth surface in a dead stop. The truck is slightly used, which is probably not helping anything, but I am really surprised how slow/weak it is. I cant imagine the thing struggling as it tries to steer a heavier upgraded truck.

Or am I just dealing with a worn servo?

Are you using the AA batteries on your truck? if you are? change it for a hump pack battery. I have megatech 1500-mah hump pack and made a big difference on steering the truck, just to let you know I'm using the original servos from 2001.

Is up to you if you still want to go with metal steering servo (witch I recommend) or a less expensive hump pack.

get an Airtronics 94358Z Metal Gear Ball Bearing servo, 200oz of torq. i put one on my 3.3 cuz i kept burning up those 2055's pushing 6.5" K-rock crawler tires. problem solved. Pics in Gallery.

I am using the Traxxas hump pack in the truck that came with, 1100mah. I guess I will try a new battery, did the extra power really help that much? What mah rating should I stay within?

I think I am going to switch out the servo after not too long for a Hitec unit and move the 2055 to the throttle.

hitec 645 mg 30 bux or so and its all I use in my Maxx's........I will say that the steering system including servo on the Tmaxx is designed in a way that the forward motion of the truck is also part of the steering.....you'll notice that while sitting still the tires don't want to move but when you get some forward motion happening they turn all be it slow but they turn.

I recently killed my throttle servo and upgraded to an all-metal-gear Hitec "Ultra Torque" servo. Holding the servo with stock horn (whatever it came with...circle horn perhaps 1 inch in diameter) and I could not squeeze it tight enough with my hand to even slow it down. That thing has a lot of power. I'm using the stock rechargable battery pack that came with my REVO 2 years ago, whatever that is.

If it makes you feel better, my brother is running 4 Team Associated trucks...2 MGT4.6's and 2 MGT8.0's...and NONE of them do a good job of turning the wheels when stationary.

My REVO does a very good job steering, but I'm running dual steering servos. It's the one thing on the truck that hasn't broken, so I haven't changed it [/knocking on wood]

+1 on the hitec 645 servo, i use one for the steering on my maxx. when combined with a decently charged reedy 1600 mah rx pac it will zip the tires left and right at a dead stop in the grass. this servo has so much i had to change out the factory servo saver for an ofna 1/8 scale servo saver. make sure you loctite the screw that holds the horn onto the servo if you go with the hitec. it has a metal drive for the saver and uses a 2.6x8mm machine screw to hold the saver in place. trust me when i tell you that you will not find this screw at any hardware store and most lhs dont have it in stock either. i learned the hard way and had to wait a week to get it from tower.

either battery is fine, the integy is the same thing but just a little cheaper. i posted the link to the reedy pack because that is what i have. get this combo of servo/battery and you will not be disappointed. i can run almost a whole quart of fuel between charges of my rx pack. its a great setup.

and remember that the mah rating doesn't mean that the larger the number the more power, its a measure of how long it will keep the 6 volts it produces. example.....a 1600mah pack will last for 30 minutes of run time where as a 2000 mah pack will go 40 minutes. these are hypothetical situations for example only your run times may vary. either way the 1600 or the 2000 its still only 6 volts.

Thanks for all the links and advice. I think I will go ahead and order the servo and battery, for 50 bucks how can you really go wrong?

I run the HT645 on the steering and throttle as well.. a word of advice, make sure you use a heavy duty servo saver.. part of the problem is the original one or a standard one will be weak.. I had the same issue with mine after using the 645.. I looked at the servo arm, it was whipping back and forth but the wheels were barely moving.. switched to a HD and works much better... The truck always steers fine when moving, it was an issue when still...
My friend has the HT 7995 digital.. 300oz servo, his whips the wheels all over the place, but when moving, they are the same... for the price of that servo, I could buy another 2.4 RX.. LOL The stock servo that came with the T-Maxx is too weak, another decent option is the Traxxas 2070 digital servo.. its quick and moderately strong, much more than stock, and they can be had on ebay for around $20... around 100 oz and fast.. the plus side to this is centering... if used on a 2.4 digital radio, the results are great...

Don't get the hitech... If your gonna spend that much money go with the futuba s9351 for $120. Look at the difference in the specs.

Weighs the same, is faster and has another 60 oz in of torque. I currently run this servo and am VERY happy with it. It will flip a maxx in a heartbeat if you want it to.

Hello all,

I've recently switched my receiver pack of my traxxas t maxx 3.3 from a 4 cell AA pack to a turnigy mini 2s lipo 800mAh pack. The receiver i'm using is the SR3300T spektrum receiver. The servos i'm using is the traxxas 2055 for both my steering and my throttle. When I plug in my lipo battery pack to the receiver, the servos are very responsive and very quick however the throttle servo seems to be very shaky. Is the lipo pack voltage too strong for the servo? When i switch the battery pack back to the 4 cell AA pack, the servo behaves normally with no shakes. what can i do to make the servo less shaky with my lipo pack whilst still using the lipo pack. I hope some of the things i just wrote makes some sense. Cheers

Unless you have high voltage servos 2s is to much. The average servo is rated to 6 volts.

l have two hitek ones in my revo, but you have sold me on futuba in an instant.l dont feel ripped off, but l dont feel l have the best for the buck either !

Comparing the Hitec 645 to a Futuba s9351 is comparing a $30 servo to a $120 servo.  For the difference in money, the futuba isn't enough gain.  Compare that futuba to a Hitec 7955tg, which is about $120.  The 7955tg has 333oz torque and something like .12 travel time at 6v.  That's apples to apples.

The Savox 0251 is the best servo for the money especially when dealing with traxxas.

2s is fine with a voltage reg and lvc. You're looking for 7 volts, just like a fully charged 5 cell nimh.

Get the savox, it can move my tires on the carpet while not moving, something that my hitec 645 couldn't do

But without those Lipo is a accident waiting to happen. Plus a fully charged 2s pack is around 8 volts which is to much for a standard servo. A 6 volt nimh pack is plug and play.

Anyone had any experience with the 208oz..,metal geared, coreless ones that have been on fleabay for $29?.......Sounds like a good deal........don't want to post a link, but type in T Maxx Steering and you'll find it........

I wouldn't mess with off brands of off brands. For another 5-10 dollars you get trusted brands. I just picked up 2 more savox 0251mg's for 60 dollars.
