Another Palmer 132" C-130 Build
I have just started my Palmer C-130 build and for this thread I will only show differences from Mike's C-130 build. I will be following his build very closely due to his diligence in finding so many errors in the plans and kit and reporting them. Hats off.
For my build, transportation is a significant problem. The bird is 8' long and it was pointed out that I would need a "School Bus" to transport it. With this in mind, I decided to split the fuselage at the F19 location, similar to Palmer's Shrike Commander. I think it will become a tight fit in my SUV .
The pictures show the mod to the crutches at F19 and the general layout of the former at F19. Since F19 risers are 1/4 x 1/4 I made two formers from 1/8 lite ply, one forward and one rear. They will have guide pins in the corners and 8 bolts to hold the two sections together. The forward former will have 1/8" id brass tubing for guides and the rear former will have the 1/8" diameter brass pins. Also, the forward former will have the 8 6/32 blind nuts. Both frames will be lightly glassed. This should form a very sturdy joint for the two parts of the fuselage and will be considerably stronger then the current F19 location. Gussets will be added after the frames are attached.

I've been thinking about getting one of these but in the 87" size. I do have the ASM C-130 with 4 OS 25FXs engines and she flat screams. With the Dan Palmer's C-130s they have the fowler flaps and the cargo and ramp doors.

Hi Jerry,
I did see your model at the EXPO. Looks great. You were not there when I passed by.
I am adding a few pics of the F19 frames that I built up. With the matching forward frame, it will just be a matter of getting the fuselage sheeting to exactly match. The main fuselage truss assembly is on the building board.

Working on the fuselage. F19 area is complete. I have fasteners on the top and sides. I need to handle the bottom a little differently since the cargo door starts at this frame. To mount the Century Retract Pneumatics, the distance between the two bearers had to be increased by 1/8" in order for the Pneumatics to be mounted properly. Also, since I am using blind nuts, I had to drill a pair of mounting holes to clear the Pneumatic Support Bracket. The strut on the Pneumatic is 3/4" too long and I will have the check with Century Retracts for a solution. Next task is to complete the landing gear mechanism.

It has been a while. Vacation got in the way of the build. Stopped work on the fuselage for a while and built the Rudder, Fin, and started the elevators. I decided to change the way the aft part of the fuselage attaches to the main part. There was too much flex, so I went to 3 fasteners on each side with one in each corner as close as I could get. Much more stable.
The forward cargo door has some compound curves to it and my covering job was a sham. I glassed it to help cover up most of the flaws. Still needs some work. The aft door worked out very nicely.
A note about the kit cutter. It his not the job of the kit cutter to proof the plans. That is up to the plans designer. The kit cutter is going to cut to the plans and will probably not correct errors. That is fine with me. What is upsetting is parts that are not cut properly and parts that are just simply missing. I put a lot of time into making new parts.
On to more of the build. Thanks Hobbico for the great filler products that you have. My covering job was not the best in the world. It is a wonder how a horrible job can be made passable with the right fillers.
Build the cargo door mechanics BEFORE installing the two plywood brackets. Not only do I not read ahead but even when I do I miss just about all of the important details.

A bit more work on the tail feathers. Usual problems, wrong size notches, ribs too large or too small but I am finally behind that. The Tail Feathers are done but in rough condition. The rudder pocket needs work to hide most of the rudder hinge area and the same for the elevators. Leading edges need to be shaped. Once again, thank goodness for the Hobbico Hobbylite. It helps make a sham into something reasonable. Once this is done, I will start mating the tail feathers to the fuselage.

The Stabilizer and Elevators are close to being ready to mount on the fuselage. I spent a good deal of time on assembling the cargo door mechanism into the fuselage. Once in I noticed that the geometry of the bell crank in the middle of the shaft was at the wrong angle. Luckily I was able to use the propane torch and melt the silver solder enough to move the bell crank into the correct position. For those following the thread that are building or plan to build, do not solder the bell crank until the assembly is mounted into the fuselage. Then in the closed position, you can position the bell crank at the angle in the plans. It is too bad that a complete geometry of this mechanism was not on the plan (or I am too far sighted to have seen it). When building the cargo door hardware be sure to measure the exact distance between the slots in F22. The arms need to have this exact spacing. Depending on what errors that may have been introduced when building the fuselage, the measurements on the plans may not be correct.
Now that this is in, I am going to build a new forward cargo door. My last one is a sham and needs to be redone.

After struggling to get the stab at -2 degrees incidence, before glue up, I decided to check the main Palmer C-130 build thread. Unanimously, everyone agreed that while the actual C-130 might have had -2 degrees incidence, this was a Lockheed design issue and involved stability with heavy loads. So, I tore everything apart and reworked the stab mounting so it is now at 0 degrees. A lot of work but it allowed me to clean up some less than acceptable workmanship. The rudder is just clamped in place. The actual rudder mounting will come after all of the servo issues for rudder/elevator are solved. It looks like the easiest route is two elevators with perhaps a Smart Fly II for balancing the servos.

looks real good Iat one time started the palmer but it was too big of a pain so I spent the last couple years researching and working on designing my own. my personal one will be 1-9th scale with 178 inch ws but im trying to decide on 2 smaller sizes for public

I am parting out my C130 build since I will not be finishing this project. I have the Century Jet retracts with Dubro Wheels and brakes. I also have the 4 fiberglass nacelles bottoms, one set for RCV engines and one set for non RCV engines. If anyone is interested please PM.
