Ziroli DC-3

RE: Ziroli DC-3
heheheh..its ok....I thought it was strange 1.5lbs but then I never made any calculations and i tookthem at face value. Still...whatever the outcome one has to see all the pros and cons. However, you have a good point and will surely have to take into consideration what you said.
Still it is appreciated.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Steve,
What is the status of your DC 3? I have not seen a post from you in a while. Mine has been on the back burner for a while, but it will be revitalized in the comming months. Flying season is already 2/3 over! I'm getting ready for the winter building season and this will be my primary project this time. Please give me an update.
Thx,
Kregg

Hi Kregg ;I just got back in the building mode again.I just started the engine nacelle sheeting on the bottom centre section and am just about done that. Then I'll sheet the top of the centre sectionIt shouldn't be too long before I get back on the fuse to finish it.Steve

Looking good Steve. I'm working on getting my interest sparked again on this project. I've been sweept away by life over the last several months and I think I need a escape again. Please keep the posts coming and you will help with my inspiration. You will be getting to the fun part soon (glassing and painting). Good luck and keep up the good work.

Well I'm finally back at the fuse tail area lineing up the stab, fin and rudder.I have'nt decided on my rudder/tailwheel servo location yet ,but I'm leaning towards what Alsez did on his.I also like your idea George M.

Steve,
She is looking very nice. After seeing yours, I'm having second thoughts about my tail construction. All of my stabilizers are built on the fuse before being sheeted. Your method of sheeting the horizontal stab before mounting is clearly the correct way. I will have a challenge sheeting mine since she is already assembled. I would love to see a close up shot of your tail control surface linkage inside the fuse. This area has been a concern and one of the demotivating factors in my procrastination. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. Please keep the pictures coming and post lots of them. The more the better. I'm waiting on a balsa order for all my sheeting material.
I think one of the BIG challenges is managing a model of this size is the shear SIZE. Just turning her over and propping her up is a lot of work. I need to modify one of my stands for this project to make this easier. I see you have the same problem and use cardboard boxes! Every time I move her I crack a stringer. I'm looking forward to having the sheeting on to strengthen her up!

RE: Ziroli DC-3
I've decided to go with a pull pull system for my rudder to avoid excess tail weight. This Dubro system is easy to install. One thing one has to consider is that once the fin and rudder is installed its permanent, unless you cut the top of the fin were its angled back and you don't want to do that.So one would want to consider glassing the fin and covering the rudder with fabric BEFORE you install them permanently.Otherwise it would be difficult to finish that area with the rudder joined to the fin permanently. So that will be my next step.In the pics I brazed together the steel actuator with silver solder, then shows the basic pull pull setup getting lined up.And a Hitec 645 MG should do the job on 6 volts

RE: Ziroli DC-3
\Steve,
That looks like an excellent choice for the rudder. I have always been concerned about the tail weight and seeing the servos in the tail (like others) just seams wrong given the tail heavy tendencies of this aircraft. That pull/pull arm looks very short on the rudder, I would feel more comfortable if it was longer, but I'm sure that is the max to fit inside the stab. I noticed you have a smaller servo in this application. Isn't a heavy duty servo a better idea like the elevator.... or is my thought process screwed up from my large aerobatic aircraft needs. Your pictures are awesome. Keep them coming. I'm sorry I can not help you in the same way, but you are way ahead of me at this point.
Will you be going to the Joe Nall fly in next spring?

The 645 MG puts out 133oz of torque on 6 volts. That should be enough to move that rudder.I'll give it a test before I button everything up.I'm in the process of shaping the tail cone. Its also a heavy item that I may use to make a plug for a glassed version.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Good call, Steve. I would guess that servo will work fine, because that balanced rudder (offset hinge) is there for a reason other than looking extremely cool!
On my scratch design, which is about 10% bigger than the Ziroli, I'm putting the rudder pull-pull arm below the stab- it seems to give a little more room for a wider arm. I'm also going to have removable hinge rods for rudder & elevator (through a removable tail cone). This will require a flexible hinge rod, maybe nylon.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
How's your DC3 coming along George? At 10% bigger she's going to fly more realistically than some.My rudder accuator goes through the bottom of the stab also but thats where I plan to put the tailwheel arm for steering the tailwheel with a nyrod.I'm also thinking of using a removable tail cone.Good idea on making the rud/elevators removable.Pics show an old Monogram DC3 fuse I'm using for reference. It has a lot of detail and sure helps on jobs such as the tailcone area.
..Id love to go to the Joe Nall flyin Kregg..you going?

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Veerrrry slow.
I've been designing this thing for a couple of years (off and on, of course), and I'm still only half done that. Building-wise, I've only made some prototype tail feathers- I wanted to see what something this size would look like to get an appreciation for strength, gaps, fit-ups, etc. It's helped a lot in designing the plane.
So, I expect I'll be done in early '06.... 3006 that is Actually, I would love to have this thing in the air in 2-3 years from now, so Joe Nall '07 is a possibility, although I'll probably go before then (without the C-47), since I've heard so many good things.
Using the monogram is a good idea- I've heard of that concept in the past, especially for exterior details. I have a TF 1:14 kit (one built and crashed, another on the building table) to help me visualize the parts a bit, although the TF kit is not 100% scale. Beyond that, I've taken a boat load of digital pictures of the DC-3 in the Smithsonian. Care for a copy??

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Here's one sample- many details all over the aircraft are shown in the photos. There are a few dozen, and they are large files. If you have broadband, I can e-mail you a few zip files- PM me with your e-mail address.
... I just realized that RCU cuts down the resolution of the photos to 800x600. The photos I have are actually much higher resolution (around 2000x1800).

RE: Ziroli DC-3
I try and go to the Nall show every year. I used to just watch from the sidelines, but this year I took my 35% Pitts 12 (see my avatar pix from the Nall) down and flew several times everyday. A lot of people, but truly amazing. I thought I would be intimidated, but I was very comfortable flying with the crowd. That run way is a one of a kind. It is like a putting green. It is as wide as our runway is long and goes on forever. This would be a great location to fly the DC3. I will be going next year, the question is will my DC3 be ready? I find that I need a firm date for motivation. Perhaps this will be it. For some reason this project just keeps getting pushed off. I have a mental block or something on this one. South Carolina would be a hell of a trip for you. let me know if you want to go. We could do some formation DC3/C47 flying!

I also have lots of digital pics. I have two aircraft documented. One is a military version in the Wright Pat Airforce Museum and the other is a Delta promo aircraft for their anniversary a few years ago. I have lots of close up shots of both.

RE: Ziroli DC-3
Kregg, do you have any photos showing the detail of aileron hinges and/or the aileron LE? The ones I have are vague. I'm trying to figure out if the aileron hinge line is consistent along the aileron span, or if the hinge line is within the aileron toward the inboard side and nearly/completely outside (below) the aileron on the outboard side.

Just got back from the big city, nice pics.I'm going to need some closeups of the bigger cargodoors for the military versions, you guys got any of those?I haven't decided on makeing them functional or not because I'm not going to finish the interior.I would like functional doors though.
