Steve it is looking great. Sorry for no posting pictures yet but I va been a little short on time. I just finished preparing the tail feathers and my retracts have arrived (have not picked them up yet). I noticed the engines seem to fit tightly??!!!. Do you think you get a close up on the engine+nacelle?.
Regarding the nose you are making it removable right?.
Listen to this alternative: I got the people from Hobby Lobby propose me and electric alternative for the Twin Comanche. It sounded very interesting however a little costly (around US800.00 total - electric motors, bateries, charger, etc.). I'm not very much of an electro fan but what do you think?

Steve,
I have been following this thread. Great looking bird so far. Im sure the finished product is going to look fabulous!
I recall a club member building one of these back in the 1970's, had a pair of Enya .40 engines for power. Basic finish on it and such, but it flew pretty well.
Also....
someone reading the thread emailed me a few weeks ago - inquiring about using a pair of Jett BSE-35 or 40L engines in the Stafford plane. I managed to lose the email [:@] If that person would be so kind as to email me again, I will be pleased to follow up. In the short term, "yes", the 40L engines would be ideal. Same OS32 size, turns more prop/slower than the 35, and you can use the untuned exhaust (per the C/L A-26/B-25 applications).

Hi Christian,
Yeh, the engines are a snug fit which is what you want, just take care on trimming the cowls.Imagine trying to fit a pair of 65`s!?
Yep the nose is fully removable giving easy access for maintenance.
Regarding electric conversion, not for me.I prefer the smell and noise of I/C too much !
I notice you are in Miami.Anywhere near South Beach? I come over there for the Winter Music Conference every March for a few days.
Cheers

Precision Fiberglass:
http://www.precision-fiberglass-prod...dex.php?cat=19
makes a set of cowls for the Stafford Twin Commanche, that appear to be full length, back to the firewall. I purchased one of their cowls for my Ziroli Dr-I, and they are pretty nice. A few pinholes, but not bad for the price. I plan on a pair for my Twin Commanche, when I get around to finishing. I was planning on a pair of Mag .52 4strokes for mine, but looks like that may be a bit much.
Can't wait to see your bird finished. Looks good so far.
I am leaning toward this scheme, or something similar:

Nice colour scheme, should stand out in the sky nice.
52`s will certainly make for a fast airplane.I`m trying to make the wing loading as light as possible, hence the satio 40`s.Nice stable scale flight is what I`m looking for.

Looking good Steve! Made me want to get started on mine. Can you post pics of the Century retracts as well? I'm thinking of ordering a set soon.
Thanks for the tip, Terry. $35 for a set of cowls sounds like a good deal to me... I really prefer fiberglass over moulded plastic, especially over the engines, where vibrations tend to tear plastic cowls if they are not reinforced.

Steve unfortunately I have been very busy lately and have not been able to work on my Comanche. I am a Private Pilot myself and I am organizing my trip to the Aopa Expo in Tampa along with my flight school (all this besides my dayli job as a sales manager for the company I work for). I wil be happy to post the pictures of the retracts. I hope to pick them up today. I guess I will also go with the Saito 40's. The fiberglass cowl is an interesting suggestion. I will check them out.
Tal to you gusys later.

Christian, did you pick up the retracts? I'd still ike to see what they look like.
This winter I probably won't get around to getting my Comanche going, time & money wise. There's another twin on the board (A Dornier 335 Pfeil), also the bathroom is in serious need of remodelling Still, I'd like to order these retracts.

I am also thinking about purchasing the stafford commanche kit. Have you made any new progress on it. Also, have you considered putting tip tanks on it. I know it looks great on real commanches.

Hey everyone! These planes look great! Would this make a good first twin or not? How does it fly in an engine out situation?

RE: Jack Stafford Twin Commanche Build 2005
Hello all.. I'm kinda new to this side of the board. I've been flying and building scale heli's for about 3yrs now. I fly for Quick of Japan and Helicopter Hobbies. Anyway I've been wanting to break things up a little and bought a Carl Goldberg Eagle 2 kit. I LOVE IT ! Anyway for my next build I'm wanting to build the Jack Stafford Twin Comanche. Was wondering if anyone has build this model or any of his models? How do they go together? Would this build be a little over my head? Really like the Twin engine scale airplanes.
So what's do you airplane guru's think? For a second airplane to build, The CG Eagle2 was my first ever airplane.
I posted this question under the KITS BUILD then saw this thread.
Thanks
Randy

RE: Jack Stafford Twin Commanche Build 2005
The Carl Goldberg Eagle 2 is an EXCELLENT trainer. It's also an excellent first kit to build. The Jack Stafford kits make excellent scale models and fly fairly well from what I understand, but this would be a huge next step to build and fly from a Eagle 2. This is a good 5th or 6th kit in my opinion as it requires some knowledge of model building techniques that are not detailed in the plans/instructions. Once you've built a Top Flite or similar kit you could try to build the Jack Stafford models.
Also with regard to flying twins, I would spend some time with a Hobbico Twinstar ARF to start. Twins are totally different from flying singles, an engine failure is a much bigger emergency in twins.
I say all this to encourage you. Getting to the point where you are ready for the Stafford Twin Comanche (or any scale twin) is a great goal. Don't listen to the naysayers at the local flying clubs.... They always tell me that my new warbirds won't fly or don't fly well only to then watch me fly them successfully. The reason scale/warbird models get a reputation for being bad flyers is that many people jump into them that do not have the skills to build or fly them. It's a learning process...
Go for it!!
