RE: Great!! New sport 60-90 size twin ARF.
Finally, another report.
I was about to start cutting the nacelles to mount the K&B 61 engines, then looked again. Couldn’t mount them at 90 degrees without an extension for the mufflers, else the exhaust would go inside the wings. Not good. So, 135 degree mount. This will put the mufflers right on the bottom, where I’d have to cut a channel in the bottom of the nacelle, again, unless I get extensions. And I’d have a huge open space over the engine I’d have to fill.
Let’s look in the Saito engine rack. I see an almost new FA-72, and a well used FA-80, both waiting for new assignments.
Did a trial fit of the FA-80, fits nice, but it’s an ABC engine – heavy. Buy another and it would be an AAC, bad weight mismatch.
OK, try the FA-72. Throttle lever hits inside the nacelle, (carb is off center on the FA-72) but there’s plenty of “Meat” that can be cut away. And the FA-72 is almost as light as the K&B 61 ringed engine. But the K&B will run off and hide from the FA-72, need more power.
What to do?
Real quick now, before your better judgment takes hold, make the call!
I did it. I ordered two brand new Saito FA-82a engines to go in the plane. And I had to order two more Tru-Turn spinner adapters, the ones for the K&B engines wont work on the Saitos.
Oh well, it’s only money.
Bill.
PS: I did not order the GK versions. wr.

Nice music, and nice power. I expect NASA will come to ask how to get their rockets to accelerate as quickly.

The nacell centerline tunnel might look nice in the long run, if they were actually fabricated that way.
Is it the angle away (or lack there of) that causes the issue? Or the initial muffler reach?

Bob:
With the K&B 61 at a 90 degree position, the entire lower corner of the nacelle would have to have been cut away, and the muffler outlet would still have been against the leading edge of the wing.
Mounted at 135 +/- degrees the muffler would still be half way inside the bottom of the nacelle. This would probably be pretty nice looking as you said, but only if the open area above the engine were filled in and covered to match the rest of the nacelle. With the right length extension you’d still have to cut wood for itto come out, but with the entire muffler under the nacelle just closing off the excess area above the engine wouldn’t be too much trouble. A lot easier than cutting a tunnel in the bottom.
With the two stroke engine, using an extension on the muffler, the 90 degree mount would be easiest. The whole problem is the exhaust port being about half way up the cylinder. Using the four stroke, with the high exhaust port, everything fits nicely.
It’s also possible I was just looking for an excuse to use Saito engines. Haw.
The plane is really well done, everything fits nicely. With a pair of Dubby’s hot engines you might even get it up to 150 mph in level flight. If that’s what you’re thinking about.

Ok, I now have the engines, thy have been thoroughly inspected and set up, ready for running in.
Valve clearances were in left field, reset them and installed the intake stacks. Pictures are one, as delivered, and two, ready to run.

Kerry:
I’m still trying to satisfy myself with the mounting of the main gear – I’ve made up several different mountings and have not satisfied myself with the compromise of weight and strength. Other than that, no problem.
Comparison with the Duellist 2/60. I expect the TW60 to be a little lighter, certainly no heavier than the D 2/60. The wing planform and airfoil are the same, so basic flight should also be the same. The elevator and rudder percentage area is a little lower, so it will probably be a little more gentle on the controls, other than roll.
The nacelles don’t extend as far in front of the wing leading edge, the thrust line is above the wing center line so a large tank can be used without cutting into the wing structure. This high thrust line will affect the trim of the plane, but it also helps the Duellist tendency to be nose heavy, needing less weight added to the tail. At the same time, the fuselage already has provision for rear mounted elevator and rudder servos, allowing functional tail weight instead of dead ballast.
I think I’m going to like this plane very much, the FA-82 Saito engines should make a very good aerobat of it. If you want to really liven the plane a pair of FA-125 engines should light it up, or if you want to go to the moon use a pair of YS 1.10 engines. Wow.

Bill ,
did you get a chance to fly this yet? I have been looking forward to your flight report since Xmas is coming and I want to know if this should make it on my list. ?

James (and all):
I had a physical collapse in July, all work on this plane and everything else stopped abruptly. I'm much better now, but I've enlisted the aid of a fellow club member to complete the assembly, shouldn't be too much longer now.
As far as the quality of the airplane is concerned, I thought I had made it clear that this was one you could buy with real confidence, as are all the products of Northeast Aerodynamics. I have never seen anything from them that was not of the highest quality.

Just heard from John at NE Aerodynamics.
Seems they are still at least 2 months away from an agreement with their manufacturer..
Hope they get it settled soon or every one will already have their twin urges filled!
