RE: Palmer 132" C-130 Build
ALRIGHTY,
Today, my ramp hinge concept has become reality. Using 2 brass tubes (1/8 & 5/32 I think) and a .025 strip of brass, I constructed my hinge. I only caused a small fire in the workshop while soldering with my mini-torch.
Here is the hinge mock up:
Pic 1= shows the basic construction and fit of the hinge. I used a large center tab that will attach to the ramp. The two smaller tabs will be attached to the lower fuselage.
Pic 2= Ramp Closed, no hinge issues
Pic 3= Ramp opens much further than picture depicts, I limited it with a plastic cup to the approx opening distance.
Pic 4= Shot of the ramp looking forward. There will be a minimal gap at the hinge point.

Troy,
Its a slick hinge and seems to work out well with its position. I made a similar hinge for the upper ramp. It takes alittle time to line up the tabs, but its strong once soldered.

Troy,
I will probably use a combination of both. My first thoughts for mounting are to drill multiple holes to allow more surface area when epoxying. Then put a screw through the center to permanently attach the hinge.
The upper ramp hinge will be trimmed to follow the contour.

Mario,
Wow, thats a sharp looking aircraft! I hope mine looks as good when I'm done.
Troy,
Where are the NAV, Strobe, and landing lights on the C-130? I think I know, but I want to make sure.

Mike,
The landing lights are located inside the main gear doors and on a mount near the front of the hard points for the aux fuel pylon. A total of 4 lights. The nav lights,.... there is a clear domed red strobe just behind where the nose gear aft door stops. Ah I'm gonna need to look at a few more things to give you better specifics on location and type.

Hey Mike and anyone else thinking about the c-130
well Mike don't shoot me but I took apart what I had built and am adding the extension mods from Lockheed. Will try to get up the additional drawing tomorrow.

Mike,
Try this website, http://www.lockheedmartin.com/data/assets/8155.pdf That is the file that will explain the modification. I'm not sure of the exact number of C-130s that will under go this mod but it looks fleet wide, they have shown CGs AFs and other countries with mod upgrades for fuselage extension much like the air force did with the C-141 Starlifter going from the A model to the B model in the late 60s and early 70s. With our ships being 1/12 scale it makes the mod perfect and it gives us some more room to add goodies and ness. hardware. I'm going to be adding the sections to my drawing hopefully this weekend and then cutting some more plywood and figuring out how to splice the longerons for the body and the keel. The RCV90-SPs are suppose to be delivered today, I'll either post something or PM you when they get here and I unpack them. Big big doins at work today so I've got to shuffle some papers and look like I belong here or I'll be flying a trashcan with my butt! (lol)

RCV90-SPs
Well, I'm impressed! These seem to be well crafted engines. As far as their fit in the C-130 nacelles, side to side seems a little close but top to bottom is great andI think the length is actually going to be perfect. I am leaning towards the Zinger 4 bladed 13 x 12 prop. By the way I ordered these engines on the 9th or 8th and they are here already from the United Kingdom, how cool is that! All things considered I'm very happy with this choice, a total of 6HP plus the benefit of scale props. TTFN

Are them the smaller FS engines that fit better in the cowl and they in a different way right and i was wondering how well they performed as they look to be a nice engine

Hi,
The CD versions are the conventional style cylinder format while the SP is the horizontal piston through the axies of the propeller shaft. While I think there were some very knowledgable folks that tried to steer me towards the RCV60-SP for a better fit, I think they were probably right for easy of fit. I just didn't want to trade away 2.4 horsepower for comfort of fit. The 60s generate 3.6 HP while the 90s are at 6 HP. Hope that answered your question.

Stick with the motto: You can never have too much power!!!
If the power is too much, then dial back your throttle servos.
Troy,
Are you extending your fuselage? I think that would be a very neat modification. How will this affect your CG? Does it remain the same?

Mike,
Yes, I'm working the plans to extend the fuselage. If the measurements are correct it won't effect the CG more than can be adjusted with a few ounces of ballast. I'm copying the plans and adding the plugs so I can layout the build correctly on the plans.

just to chime in here. i fix the full scale C-130's here at Pope AFB. I do structural maint. and fabrication every day. so if ya need any pics of anything, let me know what. i can just run out to our hangar or flightline and get just about any pic you could need. i can even get ya pics of stuff disassembled if needed for views of inner structure etc.

RE: Palmer 132" C-130 Build
troposcuba,
Glad you can join us and lend a helping hand to our builds. I do have a question regarding the color of the inside of the fuselage. I have been toying with the idea of painting the wood that will be visible when the ramp or jump doors are open.
My question is, what color is that? Is it the yellow zinc-chromate color or is it grey?
I could use a picture of the jump doors. I dont know exactly where they are located. Since I'm in the early stages of my build I can still move my formers as required to install the doors.
Thanks,
Mike

troposcuba,
Dido on what Mike said! We're really glad to have some C-130 folks to help us on this build project.
I'd like a picture of the main landing gear mechenism and the rear cargo lower ramp hinge system
A genral lit picture of the inside of the cargo bay for comparison with what I'm able to stuff in the wings and underdeck regions.
Thanks Alot!!
