I'm back working on this beast. I'm going to leave the wing center section for now and work on the nose. I need to try to detail the interior as best as I can do. I've never done this before but I'll do my best. Then make the molds for the clear nose section and vacuform them. I've never done this either so it should be a good learning experince.

For those who might be interested I found a great website for the A-26 with alot of pics I've never seen before.

more pics to follow shortly.

I got the basic nose section framed in. I just need to seal the wood, prime and paint it with paint I've ordered from Warbircolors.

Then construct the mold in my attempt to make my own nose glass section.

Nice! Even got the crawl-through to the pilots cockpit! What gear are you using? I am using CJ. The steering servo will be right in the middle of mine. Highly visible.

Ichy; I still want to put some detail on the opening hatch and was thinking of making it funtional but deceided against it as I would like to fly this one of these days and get onto another projects.

The gear is Sierra and it will be fully hidden with the steering control mounted just inside the bomb bay with the cables running just under the cockpit floor.

Thanks Eric.

I made the top glass nose section out of 1/4" balsa and pink foam. I glued the pink foam in rather large blocks to the balsa form. I first tried to trim it with a sharp knife. Not alot of success. The blade kept getting stuck. Then I tried 50 grit sand paper. Could be done but this would take a week. Then I tried a thin 1/5" piece of brass heated on the gas stove. This worked ok but got the house stinky. Then I got the idea of using the electric knife and voila, success. It allowed me to trim it very close to its final shape. Alittle fine sanding and some filler and it's done. It also made it slightly undersized to compensate for the fiberglass top coat and the plastic itself. Note to self.. when using things from the kitchen insure wife is not at home.

Fiberglass it and make a vacuum box and see if it works.

I got the bottom part done on the glass nose section. The plastic has arrived and I should be able to pull a nose section by next week. I also got the inside sealed and primed and will add a few more details before spraying it.

Really looking good there Dave. I'm looking forward to seeing how your nose cone turns out. I got my molds made, just need to clean them up some more. The 1st pour didn't turn out so good so I tried again and they came out okay. Then a few weeks back the wife called me from a yard sale saying they had some compressors. Turns out one of them was a medical vacuum pump so I'll be making a set up to make my own canopies now. Thanks for the offer, I sure appreciated it.

Thanks Again &
Standing By,

Dave, I found this photo of the underside of an A-26 for detail.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/si558/2672207012/sizes/o/

I have reinstalled the tail group back on mine. I had to cut a large hole in the fuse to do this, as well as redo the linkages for the rudder and elevators. I need to plank that hole up and then it's time to install the main gear. Our club is having a scale fun fly on the 26th and I intend to get it out into the sunshine and show it off!

Where else?...You had to ask??? : )

The one in Clare's A-26 is virtually impossible to find since it was discontinued and his value shot way beyond $150.

Great thread and great lookin model. I just bought a partial built Don Smith B-24 and saw the Convair 440 and the large B-26. I'm on the verge of ordering the 120" B-26 and doing a civilian corporate conversion. My one concern is the gear, anyone got a ball park price and which one to use? I'll post a photo of the corporate version, don't know how to on here.

Don Smith A-26 126" ¾" 22710
Product #: 22710
Custom nose gear steers on the ground but rotates 90 degree on retractions. Main struts are 3/4" diameter.

Our Price: $730.00

The above is from this page of the CJM web site:

http://www.centuryjet.com/webstore/c...TOKEN=22823881

Don't know if they have changed anything since I ordered mine several years ago, but the nose gear was not right. You need to make copies of the Don Smith plans concernig the gear and ask them to "make it the same size" if you want scale. I ordered Glennis wheels and the CJM nose gear is too narrow for the wheel. So either get a narrower tire/wheel of modify the gear.

Wingspar is using Sierra gear so he can tell you the cost and if they fit.

The pilot is actually A BBI USN pilot which is no longer available. It has a more youthful face but the balance of the body is the same as the Pearl Harbor pilot in the series.

I like the Pearl Harbor pilots officer's cap better than the other crush caps. Parachute with quick release harness is the standard one still available. Occassionally you'll stumble into someone on eBay selling this pilot...grab it if you can as they are not going to come around again.

There is a bomber pilot that would look good in the 26...

N215PB, I went with the retracts produced by Sierra. You do have to make some mods in the formers as they are designed for CJ retracts but it was no bid deal. I'm very pleased with them as they are very well made and strong. I've had others in the past that had bent and folded up on a hard landing and don't believe this will be a problem with this set.

Here's my pilot who is also 12" high and is just a tad big for this size plane.

I've reordered servos "borrowed" for another project. Back to work on this as I want to finish it for next years flying and before the large scale Sierra retracts on order for the 113" Vailly FW-190 arrive.

Back on this build Installed Hitec 5955 servo using a rotory drive for the right aileron. I really like this drive system. Nice and tight with zero slop. Next onto the flap.

Starting to spend more time on this plane now. I've been flying the wings off on my Gee Bee with great success.. Anyway, I've got the right wing done. All servos are in with tight controls, no binding and no digital servo humm. I wish that when programming the center on Hitec servos you didn't have to reprogram both ends. I have started a file with all the numbers for each servo for center, left end, right end, etc.[:@]

Next onto the left wing and I'll starting glassing the right with 3/4 oz and system three resin.

Are you sure you're not my long lost twin brother? I've been working on mine as well. But doing the left outter wing! I'll post a picture tomorrow on the other site. I did not do the intake for the oil cooler yet, but i did cut in the exit under the wing.
