Ed:
Just a thought, but that 1/2" added could be a good thing. Where is a common point for hangar rash? Front corner of the tip. Make that little block of really hard balsa and the rest of the tip a very light balsa? How about that? Or the rear corner where it's thinnest might be even better.
Balsa, heavy weight.
. In the right place, great.
Bill.

The New Duellist 2/60 is here! (almost)
Hello Fellow SD Club Members,
There has not been much movement on the SD in the past few days, but here is the status:
I'm meeting with Glenn DelConte this Saturday. We'll discuss the plans, material, kit options, and timing. I also will firm up the price. At that time the SD Club will come to terms with a payment scheme. We're still on target to do the kit layout around the first week in March.
Following is the material list. This should cover just about all of the major components. I didn't include the blocks (already discussed) and a few brackets that could be made from extra material. Also, I didn't attempt to maximize part density on the stock, so some items appear more than once for different parts of the plane. Please review and comment.

Thanks Ernest for the info and update. Great to hear. Everything seems to be running right along. I was just wondering. (and this is trouble when I wonder.) Anybody give any thought to exactly What Specific engines, Landing gear, and hardware (wheels, tanks, and such) would be best. Might give us something to think about. What's everybody thinking . Hehe this should be fun. robt.

Jeff,
I didn't include the 1/4-1/2 sheets/blocks for the nacelle tops & bottoms. I favor subbing 1/8 or 3/16 LP for those areas. This is not a firm decision.
Robt46,
I had in mind Saito 91's and Spring Air 400 Series retracts. I would like to hear some opinions on slim profile wheels to fit in those narrow wells. I expect to use 12 oz Dubro tanks. I think they'll fit.

I was thinking..
You have LP doublers listed, but on mine there are LP doublers glued to a balsa skin, the balsa skin being the part that is "doubled" by the LP. This version might be built differently.
No matter, I have wood.

Chuck:
EHF's post is a little unclear on this - what the "Doublers" are in this case are replacements for the balsa top and bottom of the nacelles. I hadn't thought about the top, but my thought on the bottom was greater strength for the front part of the nacelle, and a very good place to mount the flap servos - under the tank floor - and then a built up balsa hatch to cover the bottom.
More strength, less weight.
. I think that's great.
Bill.

I haven't blown up any Duellist plans so I'm not sure about tank sizes or retracts, but I was thinking of using some of my available ducted fan engines. I have to choose between OS 77's or 91's. Both on pipes. Hope they will fit. Man I am looking forward to this.

I have picked up a couple OS FS 90 4s. Hope they will be sufficient. Any guesstimate on weight? I want retracts, and have some old unused rohms. I haven't figured out what size strut wire they take yet, but neither have I figured out what size the SD will need. Any suggestions, anyone?

Sorry, I forgot the 2- 24x12x1/8 balsa sheets for the outside skin of the nacelle walls. The LP "doublers" are sandwiched to these walls. I've added these to the list.

SD stuff
Whow... I was thinking of OS60fx's originally, but from the sounds of it I think I'm gonna have to go bigger. ( big Rossi's huh!) Hmm i'll have to twist that through my empty head, let it rattle around for a while. Ernest---so the wheel wells are slim. Did you come up with an exact clearence measurement for the wheels. Those retracts sound good to me. Let me know. Ok Hotrods lets here more ideas on equipment. I think tuned pipes would be the hot setup The airfrane seems to say ( make it hot.) Hehe. Robt.

Oh Robt..
I think the 60FX would be aplenty, but I've had these engines forever and vow to stick them in something (other than the dirt..well, probably that too, eventually!) before I die. Mounting RIRE engines is no small feat, in fact it is impractical unless you are very determined. But nothing says, "Hey, I've made it!" like two deep, smoking holes.
And as for the pipes?..well, I'm kinda biased that way. My regular Duellist hase FIRE engines with pipes, and I really like the way they look on a twin. The pipes for the Rossi's look like aluminum baseball bats!

I'm thinking maybe two O.S. .61 RF's, piped. I like the
rear pipe look also. And I'm thinking Robo-Struts....no
retracts....with screwed on hatches over the gear-bay
doors.
I still might go with two Magnum .91 4-strokes....side
mounted with the pipes hanging down. Dead-bolt
reliable. Mine will be the "no-fuss" version. I wanna fly
it....not work on it all the time....
Dave.

Hey folks,
If you want fixed gear and spring struts look at this. They are easily made, and cost many bucks less than Robo-Struts.
The airplane is my TiggerKitty stand way-off scale F7F.
Retracts or spring struts,
. Else we'll all think you're nuts.
Bill.

Yeah I think your right Chuck. I love those OS61fx's. Got 2 of them. One in a trainer and one in a T/F Mustang. I've had no problems with them. And that Mustang was Quick. (notice the was word) That baby went in! Pilot error. My brain couldn't keep up with my eyes. Ha! Anyway I think i'm gonna do some research on tuned pipes. I know Zilch about em. Got any thoughts. Hello SD Club Members,
Glenn DelConte has the plans, material list, and my figures. I'll give him a few days to scan in the plans, estimate the amount of work he will have to do, and calculate his wood costs. I've seen some of his work and a couple of his kits fly. I believe he can get the job done for us. I'll post again, as soon as I know more.

All interested parties:
Our orders are up to forty-two now, and the ordering will close pretty soon, as the final steps are currently in process.
All "Pre" orders will be filled at cost plus a slight encomium for our president, later kits (ifany) will be sold with an addition for profit.
So if you want one, get in line now.
We're in the final stages,
. For the twin of the ages.
Bill.

Glass
I have already signed up for the plane but if this were a truely round world I would like a glass fuse and foam wing version
However I am interested in purchasing some glass parts. cowls and any other parts that could be done easily in glass.
Is anybody else in the mood for a glass option?

O.k., so I'm jumping in late. I scanned through the posts, but didn't see a price. Any idea what the cost will be before I decide if I should jump on the bandwagon?

Re: Glass
Firestarter (Steven King?)
What's that? "It's a Round Round World?" Did someone leave the back door open for Peter Leeds, Jesse White, and Stan Freberg?
We've had a few posts on this possibility, and I'll confess I've been tempted myself. Our esteemed president, Mr. Ernest Fleming, is entertaining the 'glass/foam option for the next plane in the series, the Super Duellist Mk III 2/120, which will have a wingspan of 102.75". Please note Mark THREE, designating a major change. We've not done anything towards its development other than discuss the possibility.
Perhaps you'd like to be lead or assist on this one?
I am about to do my first 'glass/foam, got the last one of Joe Bridi's F7F kits.
The SD Mk II 2/60 has been mainly an enlargement with relatively minor changes from Dave Platt's design, but the 'glass/foam Mk III will be all new engineering, and problems, with the change in material.
I've built a twin or three,
. But 'glass/foam? It's new to me.
Bill.
PS: Anyone else interested? Please comment. wr.
