Just from what I've gleaned off the Internet, it looks like the VQ has operating scale-ish fowler flaps and the KMP does not. Also from the description that is available on the KMP website, I'm going to guess that theirs will have tail booms made mostly of fiberglass, while the VQ is mainly built up. The cockpit pod on both look to be mainly fiberglass. For scale fidelity, I'm going to guess that the VQ will get the nod (they've even seen fit to put gear door on the model), but it'll likely be more expensive (pricing not yet released) than the KMP ($400). They are similar in size, but I think that Morris is recommending 60 2Cs and 91 4Cs on their model (they may be able to handle the added weight of this setup due to the flaps), while the KMP recommends 40-46 2Cs and 52 4Cs. I'd say it's a good time for people who like to assemble ARFs as opposed to build kits.

I've never spent that much on any arf. Been looking for some plans of a P-38 in that size but havent had any luck. I wonder, scale down the Ziroli plans? Would probably work.

dmajchrzak:

My impression of the VQ is ordinary plastic, not fiberglass. Don't like plain plastic. That's why, even though I am a twin nut, I never bought a Twinstar. Too much plastic.

I'd check the KMP, if it is indeed fiber reinforced plastic I'd go for that one.

Or Nick Ziroli's plan, and a kit cutter.

You pay for plastic, you see.
. All the cracks? They're free.

Bill.

Try calling Morris Hobbies. From what I understand, Most of the molded parts are gel coated fiberglass. There's very little plastic on their model... Check out the Morris site, RCWarbirds.com, and the VQ Model Aircraft website.

Here is the first production model of the fibreglass fuselage and balsa construction KMP (RCFlight in Scandinavia) P-38 J Lightning. The model comes with Spring air-type trike retracts installed, flaps etc. These are the vital measurements: Length 152cm (59'8''), wingspan 210cm (82'7''), wing area 58,8sq.dm, engines 46 2-stroke or 52 4-stroke. Plan on ASP 61 4-strokes in mine.Expected delivery april.

Does anybody know if the KMP comes with retracts for $400? I'm guessing no... Any update on the VQ pricing too?

Thanks!

Wow... I guess it does..

----- from Andrew
Hi Dave:

The kit will be available in the spring. It will come with a set of three air retracts.....intro price will be 399.95. The wing span is in the area of 84 inches. If you go to the web site the plane can be found under the "NEW" R/C section. I plan on having the planes in Toledo.

Thanks,
ANdrew

$399.95 is a steal. Thats cheaper than the VQ A-26 with retracts. I'll definately will be getting the KMP thanks.

looking at the two company web sites i question the quality of the kmp. there is another tread i found that said they wont support the customers.

the VQ looks like a much better model. from the photoes.

the KMP webpage looks like a scaned add and no real good photos of the plane. VQ at least gives you several pics of a real plane and the production.

oh and the VQ page says the plane is fiber glass not plastic.

i would want to see ne of the kmp up close befor i would shell out the money

just my .02

Either way, the VQ isn't worth $949.00!

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY I will ever buy another VQ product !!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER!!!!
I had the B-26. The nacelles were vaccuum formed thin ABS plastic and nearly impossible to fit properly. The cowls were an unbelievably brittle fiberglass. To fit retracts took forever. I can't remember the weight but it was heavy.
On the maiden flight it made 3/4 of a lap and the fuselage broke letting the vertical stab fall off. Straight in from about 70 feet.
