OV-10 Bronco
Struts for the OV-10, both arfs & kits in the 80", 90", and larger sizes.
First run of the 80" version, to fit spring-air main with 3/8" sockets ARE IN THEIR BOXES, AND WILL BE SHIPPING TOMORROW (2/7/06) .

I didn't see a reply to my inquiry in post #250. Is Lenny going to make scale gear for the OV-10? These are like
Sierra Precision's sport gear. I provided images of what the front knuckle of the nose gear looks like and the
knuckle to trailing arm scale look of the mains. Earlier when Lenny said he was going to do gear for the 1/6th
and wanted to do a 1/5th for the Palmer he wanted to do a scale gear. There is nothing about a scale gear set
on Lenny's web site. Do you know what he is going to offer at this point?

The tricky thing about Bronco main gear that many people do not understand, is that it articulates to fold the wheels forward as the strut assembly moves back up into the wheel well. Without this function the wheel well ends up too far back in the fuselage. From what I can tell it was designed that way to move the wheel further forward into the thicker area of the fuselage because the wheel would not fit into the fuselage section if it was retracted with the strut fully extended. This should also apply to scale RC Broncos too.
I once made a plywood prototype gear to work out all the pivot points and it worked perfectly using the scale parts. I worked around Broncos for six years in the Navy Air and had a lot of time to learn the details.
The reason the Bronco gear struts extend so far when the aircraft is not setting on the tarmac is the way the Bronco is designed to be landed. It is designed to operate from rough runways and is literally flown into the runway on landings. The Bronco is not flared on runway contact like most aircraft. The pilots make all landings in this controlled crash method and the nose down stance makes it stick as the massive struts absorb and cushion the landing. It was a lot of fun working around them because they are real rod rods. Loved to watch them take of and land. It is pretty neat to see them approach the runway with the long struts and wheels hanging down and smash into the runway and stick! Never was able to score a ride though.

Aside from the short throw extension on the front of the Yoke, there can't be any shortening on an RC. An extra inch on the door at the rear isn't noticed on the mains.

I am building the wing of my Rich Uravith Bronco OV-10 and am curious about the aileron hinging. The plans call for up movement only. Does this work well or should they be hinged to allow up and down travel? Any info on good throw levels for all surfaces is appreciated.

I set mine up with both up and down throws. She's a absoulute pleasure to fly. Take your time and go with your building experience. If I wasnt sure on any of the assemblies on the plans, I took extra time to eval and make the necessary mods.

Well Rich says Shinden's making those gear for someone else...not him. Interesting...Darryl committed
to making a better set, or more scale like set, for Rich's 81.5" OV-10 and have it in one of Rich's OV-10's
at Toledo. We'll see what arrives for show and tell in Darryl and Roger's booth. I'll be happy to simply find
some scale knuckles for the trailing arms.

I've just got an OV-10 Bronco main fuselage, the plane's wingspan will be ca 80", and i'm going to use 2 Kyosho GX .40 2 T engines. It won't have retractable gears.
I read your experiences with 2 pieces of .40-er engines in plane, the rest said, it's not even enough for the plane.
What do you think, may i get bigger motors /example: 2 pieces of .61/? I want to take off from grass.

I'm just starting to glass the Nacelles and wings. I'm using .58 ounce cloth and West Sytems epoxy and will paint with F & M Stits paint. I still have to finish the cockpit and I'm waiting for some replacement canopy panels from the guy who bought Stans Fibertech. Another long story we scale guys go through. Still a lot of work to do. I hope to have it flying for our Hatbox IMAA flyin here in Muskogee in October. Been 2 years. No need to get in a hurry now.

I see you have found my project's status comforting at last. These things seem to ebb and flow with the cycles of the moon.
My daughter would be interested in a video of your 1/5th for her OV-10 documentary she's shooting as her thesus for her
Masters of Fine Arts Degree. She's shooting a documentary for the OBA, OV-10 Bronco Assn....Life and Death of a Warbird.
Find someone with a Sony DP-150 Sony digital camera to do a walkaround of your model and get it to me after you get your
paint and cockpit done. You'll need a pilot and JAFO in the back seat.
It was my FAI project that got her started on this project. It would be an honor to see your 1/5th in the film if she can get it into
the story line. Let me know if you would like to send in the footage. It has to be shot with a DP-150 Sony for continuity sake. Let
me know ASAP.

We`ve got the 2 fuselage ribbs cutted out from 4 & 3 mm plywood. I will change the two .40 engines to 2 pcs of .61s
I will use pneumatic rectractable gears for the bird, but this wont be scale gears.
This is my first multi-engined airplane, and i hope it will work
By the way, how did u do the gas-rods? I cannot decide whitch solution is the better:
Using 1-1 servos for each engines
Or
1 servo and some mechanics for that

The fuselage and boom "formers" can have triangle cut off corners for use with triangle balsa stock along
the perimeter of the fuselage and booms to permit a realistic rounded edge as found on the full size OV-10
instead of the squared edges of most plansets.
Landing gear sweeps rearward on the mains and forward on the nose gear. With most plans you will need to
move the former for the nose gear mount from a rearward retraction to a forward one. Lay the nose retract
back at an angle to achieve proper fit beneath the pilot instrument panel.
Most people are simply bending the mains to simulate the trailing arm strut without using gas struts. This must
be a modest bend in order to fit within the booms.

These are the only scale retract/strut I have ever seen. The struts were made one off by Gaines Smith
a subscriber to RCU. The retract heads are similar to Century Jets out rigger for the yoke to prevent a
sudden twist to the strut when initially touching down. This is important as the OV-10 is notorious for its
yaw when it initally reaches ground effect.
Some people use gas strut and spring over units from rc cars for the compression strut...what I believe
you are calling the gas rod. You can do that or make your own.

It is much simpler to use two separate receivers on the same frequency - one in each boom....each controls the functions on its side of the aircraft... It is far simpler, and eliminates the maze of wires criss crossing the wing.....
