wow, what a great name for any warbird. you should use it. good to see shes flying fantastic. im staying with the thread, keeping my fingers crossed on the kit. please keep us updated. im breaking in my 91s in a couple of mustangs right now.
thanks. I'll take it under advisement. Keep checking in. Those 91s should do well in her. The 100s have plenty of reserve power. Huge round loops are easy with them. I need to get some video of that.

Default RE: Nitroplanes 90

Weather was perfect for our fly in this past Sunday. My P-38 was very popular both in the air and as the subject of static pictures. It was one of only two twins at the event, and the only nitro one. The other twin was a very nice Top Flight 310, but it had electric power. It was fast, smooth, and rock solid, but it did lack that wonderful 4-stroke twin sound.

Our 'hanger' was kinda war bird central, except for my brothers Something Extra.

On one aborted landing attempt, I actually dragged the left main, Bob Hoover style, but purely not intentionally. I was running out of runway, and the rocks off the end of the runway at the north end had already claimed one airplane that day. The two Saitos pulled her out of harms way even with the flaps fully deployed. Let's just say that the crowd was very entertained, and I needed a trip to the little boys room.

PS I added something to the P-38 for the event. Anyone see anything different?

PSS Turbo Headers are on the way for the twin Saito 100s. Hope to have them installed very soon.

Had her at another Fly in this week end. Two more great flights including my first low inverted pass. My day was cut short when the rear hinge on the nose gear door broke. It had been straitened a couple times from nose gear collapses, and it broke right at the hole for the closing spring. I've since made repairs. Easy with the hinge covers I have installed.

A 134" B-17 was at the event and I was looking forward to a flight with both our planes. He had a mechanical problem that grounded him. We will both be back for the War Bird event at the same field next month. I'm looking forward to some video with both planes flying together.

The man talking in the second picture was an Avenger crewman (ball turret). Great stories to share.

I'll be installing new TurboHeaders, from RC Specialists, on the engines this week.

Finally got the pilot in his seat. I still have more to do on the panels, yoke, and other details, but at least someone is in the office now.

Well, after having this plane a couple years, I am finally getting started on it. I have given this a lot of thought and after vacillating back and forth over nitro or electric, I'm going with what I am most familiar with on this one. I will be installing two new Moki 61s with Pitts mufflers. The three biggest mods will be, the three piece wing, and rounding the bottom of the booms, and the retracts. So far, the wing is cut apart outside the booms and the center sections are joined together (pictured). They will be permanently attached to the booms and holes will be cut through the sheeting to access the compartments below. She will stay on her gear for transport, the way it should be. The way Nitro has this set up is totally stupid.

Here is a list of some of the mods I intend for her.

(done)three piece wing with carbon fiber wing tubes for the outboard sections
(done)rounding off the bottom of the booms for a more scale look and to make more room for the wheels when retracted
(done)adding retracts with scale looking struts and gear doors
(50% done)adding cockpit detail to include a full body pilot with parachute and other gear, and interior detail
(done)-adding the missing canon to the nose
-installing the counter balances to the elevator
(done)installing the turbo scoops on the sides of the booms just under the trailing edges
-adding some fairings to the center pod and wing attachment
(done)adding the cross bracing to the canopy
-possibly turning the flaps into the fowler type (not sure yet on this one)
(done)detailing the appearance with Grey paint on the bottom, weathering, panel detail, simulated lights, polished ovals on the nocells, etc

The plane is exceptionally light to start with, so I think I can get this done and still have a lighter wing loading than most of these bigger war birds have. I'm finally mentally into this project and hope to see it through for a maiden this spring. The wing tubes were holding me up. I had the tubes but couldn't find the sleeves anywhere. A friend made me a pair out of glass, and now I'm off the drawing board and on the building table.
Thought I would review how she is coming with the originally intended mods. As you can see, I still have some work to do, but she has come a long way to date, and has been a real joy to display and fly even as she is.

For those in the Midwest, I plan on attending the Ames Multi Engine Fly-In September 5th and 6th in Ames Iowa. I will have this P-38 with me and plan to open her up. Hope to see some of you there.

Here is the 38 with the new TurboHearder mufflers installed. I used aluminum pipes to get the exhaust out the cowl. These mufflers are very compact and work exceptionally well in the narrow war-bird type cowl. The first picture is with the stock Saito mufflers. This is the third []and hopefully last time I have reworked the glass on these cowls. Also here is a link to the video of the engine trials with the new mufflers. A slight change to tuning resulted in the two engines being within two clicks of each other. Much closer than before. A faster throttle response is noticeable as well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSOKZHEk7Ck

nitromodels finally have these back in stock just last week. my question is, is the retro kit idea dead on this project ? i dont want to purchase airframe until i know if the kit will be avaliable to us. the wingspan is just too big without the tube mods. and removing the wing each time aint gonna cut it. if it aint gonna happen thats cool too. its been a great build thread to follow. nice p-38 ram.

Hello A6TEXAN. I got sidetracked by a number of things, but am back to working on this. In fact, a local builder is doing these mods to his right now, and I'm working with him tweaking all the templates and such. He saw mine fly at a local event this summer and came up to me asking about it. Turns out he had his NIB a few years and was disenchanted with all the same things we are about the stock plane. It went to the front of his building list after we spoke. He is only a few miles away and that makes it easy to test out what I'm supplying him. He will be posting some pictures soon. He has his wings cut and is in the process of adding the tubes now. Hope you can join the squadron.

Anyone contemplating these upgrades will have my full support. I'd be interested to know if Nitro made any changes themselves to this latest release.

As far as the mod kit goes, yes, it will be ready in the near future.

Ram3500,
This is very good news on the mod kit for those of us who have been patiently waiting for the thumbs up from you that these are available. Keep up the great work, you have created a wonderful upgrade to the Nitroplanes P-38. We all look forward to your progress.

Well guys, Let's crank it up if you like!!!! This is it!!!! I'm sure all you P-38 lovers will enjoy this. Here is what I have on the 'Nitro Planes 90" P-38 mod Kit'. You will receive these items.

-a complete manual for the mods including my set up and flying suggestions
-bottom boom formers including the ones for the main gear doors
-main gear door templates
-new root and outer wing panel ribs (light ply) including the inner ones (aviation ply) for the wing bolts
-new aviation ply main and nose gear mounts with supports
-new servo mounts (aviation ply) for the booms
-slide out air valve tray for the nose with servo mount (light ply)
-template for the nose gear door
-cross section full scale drawing of the new cowl shape
-template cross sections for the crew pod bottom
-parts for the wing cover frames
-a bill of materials for the balsa and hardware needed to complete the mods with as many suggested sources as I can give you
-a CD with many pictures of the processes and some shots of the finished plane for reference. Many are in this thread, but I have added more.
-my personal support throughout your upgrades

I'm thinking $79 for the kit. How does all that sound to you guys? Did I miss anything you think you will need? If so, please let me know and I will include it. I plan to put these together as they are ordered and would like a (1) week lead to ship. I'm ready to take orders and don't need any money till I'm ready to ship, at which time I can let the builder know a day or two in advance so as not to hold it up.

This plane is available again from NitroPlanes for $215, so maybe a few more can enjoy her now. IMO, these mods can easily turn this P-38 into one worth 4 or 5 times that, if not more.

If you have any suggestions on marketing to get the word out on this, please pass them along.

Please send me a PM with your orders, and any suggestions can be posted right here.

Thanks for all your encouragement through my build and now I hope I can give some back to see others enjoy this plane to the fullest, like I do.

Yes, pay pal is fine. I don't believe in penalizing guys for using it either. When they are almost ready to ship, I can send my pay pal with the notice.

Yea, the more I think about it, the CD would probably be a big help. Close ups of the finished plane would help a lot too. I need to get more of that together. If need be, anyone ordering the kit before I have that ready will get one mailed out soon after, rather than holding things up.

I also have something else in the works that I'm just about ready to unveil. Hope you guys like the idea. More on that very soon.

I mentioned something else I was looking into and this is it.

Would any of you be interested in a rear window decal for your pickup, cap window, etc, customized to fetcher a picture of your personal favorite RC plane or planes?

All I need is a digital picture of your plane and the kind of vehicle it will be used on. A high quality see through decal will be printed using your picture.

I can also produce solid decals for cap side doors and such using the same provided pictures. Or even large wall decals of your creations for the walls in your shop.

I'd like some feedback if you like something like this. I know some companies do this in general, but these are made by modelers specifically for other RC enthusiasts at a reasonable price.
