Got the supercharger intakes done. Here they are. I used Estes rocket nose cones, shaped balsa for the front, and shaped 1/2" triangle stock for the mounts.

About time you got back here.
I started dry fitting mine together this week end. Somehow ended up short a prop.

GG, very nice work, and even comes with nose gear!!! Looks like you will beat me into the air with a beautiful P-38. I''m working on the cockpit while I wait for other parts. I have some flat black foam core sign board that is making some nice light panels that don''t need paint. I''ll have some pictures soon.

For those interested, I now have some material to cut out some formers and ribs. I am tweaking my patterns before I do.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you guys come up with in addition to what I have done. Lots of potential with such a light plane to begin with. It will be a pleasure to help in anyway I can. Wish we could bring them together somehow. 'I have a dream' .

UPDATE.......NEWS FLASH.........AS OF 7:15 PM, THE NOSE GEAR IS IN MY HANDS!!!!!!!

`

I will be spending a little time on it tonight. Stand by for pictures.

Well, after much waiting, the nose gear is under way. I have the mount designed (templates made)[)], built, and ready to install. I should have it installed tonight. Then I can get her on her feet and see if my calculations are good for a scale like angle of attack on the ground, unlike the stock Nitro version. Much easier to have plans to work from, but everything just takes a little longer to design as you go. The wedge in the mount puts the tire just clear of the door, yet still leaves a scale like angle to the 105 deg. nose strut when down.

Finally got her up on her feet. Everything is working out well. Good, scale, nose high angle of attack, good strut angle, feels solid. Plenty of room for the steering servo, and cockpit. Still need to work out the hinging of the nose gear door, but so far so good.

Door works great. I figured out where to put the pivot point (not where I expected), and the curved door just clears the bottom and looks fine. I'm working on the operating system for the doors now (trying to avoid air cylinders), and getting the center pod painted. Pictures later tonight.

Here is the nose gear door. I found that if the hinge is set to pivot about 1/4" back from the edge, is swings well clear of the opening, even being curved as it is.

Doors on the 38 look good ram3500. I'll have to keep this thread saved so I can go off it to do my gear doors like that. I have the KMP P-38 with 2x evo 61's on it.

Got a little more paint on the pod. I'm going to add some panel lines and other details like the ladder outline, and the recognition lights to the bottom yet. I also pulled out the 'guns' that Nitro installs in the nose, so I can install ones more scale in length and also add the cannon that they didn't deem necessary.

Gary are the retracts air up/ spring down?
Easiest set up for closing the gear door is a piece of clear fishing line. One end on the outer end of the door, other to the inside of the pocket. As gear closes it contacts the line and shuts the door behind it. As gear extends it releases tension on the line, door drops open and gear extends. Pretty much fail safe.

I always worry about having a gear door set up that fails and makes you land wheels up.

I finally went with air up and air down. I'm still pondering the situation, but my thoughts are some kind of spring loaded door that would be pulled shut as you describe, but that would be spring loaded to open. I wouldn't want the door to close behind the gear accidentally and be trapped by it. I have used this method before, but not on doors this large. I am looking at linkage to the struts as well, but the geometry is tricky and it looks like I would need a slip joint to boot. I'm trying to avoid the (5) air cylinders and sequencing valve to do it pneumatically. $$$$$$$ Hope I can solve this before the snow flys again.

Put springs on the hinges. I drilled 1/32" holes in each hinge half, used ball point pen springs cut down to 3 coils, bent each end to insert in the drilled holes in the hinges.
Bolted the hinge halfs together, rotated one half 360 degrees to put the spring under tension, then attached the hinge into place. Automatic self opening doors. [)]

The light bulb finally came on with the gear door operating system. If it works as I have it visioned, it will be a simple thing to do and easy for anyone to install. No air cylinders, fancy valves, or electronic sequencer to mess with. I'm working on it tonight and will have pictures soon. Stand by.

Here is what I came up with. It works great and took all of 20 minutes to put together. I still need to install the pull cable, but that is the easy part. A drop of oil on each hinge and the springs, and it all works smoothly and will not be affected by the wind when open, I don't think. I'll now install the same system on the other four doors. The whole thing weighs basically nothing.

Closing cable is now done on the nose gear. Works good. I used 4-40 size pull-pull cable.

I'm going to call the outside of the center pod done for now. I'll paint the inside of the gear bay and work on the cockpit now. The nose cone will be removable and behind it will be the battery. I have a platform made for it below the air tank.

A few more shots of the pod exterior. I reworked the guns and added a canon as well. I'm going to forgo adding the pod to wing fairings for now. Maybe later or next winter. I'm hoping to be able to run in the engines next week and be ready for a maiden in a couple week ends. Still a lot to do, but all the major engineering challenges are handled now.

Thanks. Yea. All I have left is...... install most of the wiring and the RX, air lines and control valve, install the air charging valve, door closers for the main gear bays, finish the cockpit and pilot, install the canopy, anti rotation pins for the plug in wings, all the control horns and clevises, install the fuelers, permanently install the tail feathers, finish the panel lines on the booms, weather the booms with dirt and smoke trails, install the battery, install the throttle linkage, install the props and spinners, finish the hold-downs for the top hatches, install the flap and aileron servos, paint the inside of the gear bays and cockpit, and possibly install a Twin-Sinc and or gyro, and shoot the whole thing with a clear matt. Piece-o-cake.

Finally had some time to work on this plane again. The nose gear bay is now painted and the panel lines are about done on the underside, as well as some weathering. I also installed the hatch retainers.

I hope to run the engines in a couple days. I am setting them up with separate trims with my JR 9303. I have a Sullivan on board glow system only because I installed them inverted.

Gary if your weather's been anything like here in PA, it's going to be late summer before we get any flying weather to amount to anything. Cripes I had ice on the windshield this morning, global warming my asp. High winds and rain all weekend. And weather babe is saying won't break 60 even over the holiday coming up. Might stop raining thou.
