I am on my 3 days at work so I have not gotten much done... Its getting the busy time of summer also, so i may slow a little.
I biult the elevators up the same way I did the rudders. Now all I need to do is install the elevator cables and i can finish up sheeting the fuse.....

Default RE: Handley Page Halifax 1/9th scale

I have still not closed the fuse up yet. I feel I may have minor changes to the set up so I did not want to install the pushrods yet.

I have moved back to the wing. The wing is three piece and will be removeable. The model will come apart in 5 pieces.

Next was the Nacelles. If you look at the three views there is alot of up thrust in the engines. Well I have build alot of multi's and I always remove and upthrust in the motors. If I would leave it in I would be constantly retrimming the plane at different speeds. I always Zero the motor to the thrustline/centerline of the fuse.

I have drawn up the nacelles. I plan on building up one inboard and one outboard nacelle and then pulling it out of ABS. The inboard may be in 2 pieces. The very front where the cowl is will be balsa sheeted and ABS will form into it.

To install the nacelles I first draw a nacelle doubler and that is glued the inside of the ribs in the proper location. The inboard was easy because they are all the same. The outboards each side is unique. The inboard ones are larger and are 1/4" a/c ply due to the retracts being added soon. Here are pic's.

Here are a coulpe pic's of my two shop helpers. I only work them about 6 hours a day to keep the child labor people at bay. Here they are sanding out the Halifax for me... This is Noah and Mary Kathryn

Excellent work Fockewulf. I really appreciate all the nice photo's your taking too.

I'm working on a twin right now that uses a similar design for the engine nacelles. I got the idea from studying the Royal B25 plans. The original was just a ply box that glued on top of the sheeting and I wanted something prettier.

Now this is just the main frame work for my nacelle and motor box. I am in the process of making molds for the actual nacelles. I am going to pull them out of ABS... Quick and easy one i get the mold made. Post a pic of the mold later ...

Thanks for the comments guys.

Well I have not taken anytime off just a little slow. I have been working on plugs for the nacelles. I am having to make my molds in 2 pieces due to the size of my vacuum forming table. I am pushing the limit by going to 14". We will see if it works.. Here are a couple pic's of the molds. They are built up just like the would be on the plane. I am builing them on a piece of 1/4" ply.

Thanks D-Rock

I got both nacelle parts finished and before I do the finish work on them I though I would try pulling one of each to see if It could be done. I was worried they were too big..

I learned two things. .040 is too thin and I am going to have to reinforce the molds due to too much pull on the Vacuum. I will glass both molds with 2 layers of 4 oz cloth. I pulled the larger one with .060 ABS and the sides are still too thin. I would still glass the insides to make them stronger. But it looks like they will be able to work. The front piece will blend into the round cowl area...
You can see on the front half how the vacuum pulled depressions into the mold...

I am drawing this as i go. So in the end I should have a set of plans ...I will offer them at a very reasonable price and have ABS parts also.....I may even offer a laser cut short kit for this plane. I have to see what the price would be...Butit did not take me long to cut mine out...You can see I have only been woring on this 39 days

Default RE: Handley Page Halifax 1/9th scale

I had someone ask me about my vacuum former.

Well I found one a swap shop. The guy wanted $700 for it. After talking to him on and off I got it for $150. It was ok but would never pull ASB as he claimed. He said he was pulling ABS with a shop Vac, There is no way... His whole set up had too many leaks. So I reworked the table. I sealed it all and used a new aluminum baking sheet to make my pulling surface..My next problem was the vacuum. So I was talking to a guy who said when he started out he was using a air compressor. He used the intake side. Well I looked at my aircompressor and pulled the intake filter and found that a Quadra 65 muffler was a perfect fit. SO I sealed the muffler and one of the exhaust tubes I hooked the other side to PVC pipe. I moved this through a check valve and into a large reservoir made of 8' long 3" PVC pipe and then into a valve. This goes into the vacuum former. With the valve close I am able to pull 20 in of vacuum compared to the 5 that a shop vac pulls. It pulls so strong it will pull holes in the ABS if I am not careful...

Here are some pic's of the setup...

Default RE: Handley Page Halifax 1/9th scale

I just went to test pull the first attempt on the outboard nacelle. It went very well. I refinished all three plug in 2 layers of 6oz and one layer 4oz smooth finish cloth. I ended up sanding the plug with 180 grit paper. It does not have to be 400 grit paper or anything. I use baby powder as a dry lube to get the plug to release from the ABS. I rub the powder into the plug.

I cut it out to test fit it to the wing. The inside of the nacelle should be glassed before it is cut out. It just makes it easier to handle...

BTW if anyone needs a part pulled I can do that very cheaply . My vacuum former top is 11x14 and the part can have no negative draft on the plug.

I am planing on use 4 Scorpion 4020-16 outrunners with an CC 80 amp speed control and a 6 cell lipo.. I am shooting for 40 lbs AUP

This setup should give me 45lbs of thrust for take off and then about a 10-12 min flight.

I would figure on a 91 four stroke or any light 2.3ci gas motor... G-26 sre just to heavy. They make some nice light gas motor right now that would work...The only problem that electric solves is that the cowls will only be 6" in diameter...

Well I ordered my motor and speed controls today.
4 Scorpion 4020-16 motors
4 CC 80 amp speed controls
$831 shipped

I finished closing up the wing today and installed the leading edges so I can build the front part of the nacelles onto the nacelle bases...

Thanks John....

Hey everyone. I had to pull all the inboard nacelle parts today. So I went ahead and made a video of the Vacuum Forming machine and how it works. There are other vid's out there but this shows my setup:

Here are some pic's of the nacelle bottoms. The front part of the nacelles are sheeted. the ABS will attach to the nacelle at the bottom and be blended in. You can see the is a stringer that runs down the side on the bottom that I will attach the ABS to. I will add a small piece of sheeting to that area also to get the consistant width with the front.

The cowls are going to be out of ABS also. Most likely a 2 piece cowl. a top and bottom. I need that so I can open it up to get to the batteries after each flight.....

I plan on making plugs for the scoops also. due to the shape thay will have to be in 2 pieces.....

Well i finished sheeting all the nacelles. I also finished pulling all the parts except 1. I have glassed the inside of both inboard nacelles and it turned out really nice and sturdy. I use .75 oz cloth over all inside and 4oz strips on structurial points.
here are pic's of the finished sheeting and nacelles taped in place.
Oh 2 more thoughts. I will be starting on the cowls next. And the openings you see on top behind the nacelles will be my access points for the batteries. I will place doors there. I was going to make the cowls come off but I just did not like that Idea to much....

This is my last building post until after the weekend.
Hope everyone has a fun and safe 4th of July.

Default RE: Handley Page Halifax 1/9th scale

Well I just got back from Vacation and 2 days at work. I am in the process of cleaning up the shop so i can get started back.... I did pull teh outboard Nacelles and plan on glassing the insides tomorrow. I also am able to pull a clear one. This will allow me to put hard points in teh correct spots without have to just feel around. I can do this for all nacelles to make installation easier....
