hey guys
any interest in a ziroli dc3 build.? have just about all the parts .this is going to be a more of a practical scale build...meaning not to much in the small scale details dept. this airplane is meant for more of an everyday flyer than a top gun competitor.it will have flaps and retracts and probably done in the c-47 military version..starting to build so should be posting some pics soon

Fuse breakdown and startup. I'm the project manager and wallet for this job, Thanks Bryan for the kit. My subcontractor is doing the wing while I try hacking at the fuselage. Kit was started and put away. It had some storage damage but stringers are easy to replace. Got it into the work stand and noticed a slight twist towards the tail,(probably due to storage) decided to replace all the stringers!

Your pics looks fine to me. Don't want to hijack your thread. But here a couple of pics of the TF DC-3. I just have a 5 megapixel cam. Yes going E-powered on this bird. I bought a cheap set of Forstner bits. I am drilling out every former and rib that I can. So far total weight taill group you see is 6 3/4 oz.

more progress...was slowed down a little due to the quality of the sheeting included with the kit..so far i would give the laser cutting of the parts a B+ but the sheeting and some of the wood sticks get a "D". the 3/32 sheeting for the tail is very rough. had to true all the edges for edge gluing and most of the sheeting is not of uniform thickness..so spent a good amount of time truing all this up...and some of the stock for the horiz trailing edge and elev leading is warped so bad its not useable in those areas.
in the pics got the horiz sheeted and the scale hinges installed.due to keeping the tail as light as possible the hinge pin in the pics is 1/8 carbon fiber rod. so much more lighter than a steel pin.the first major mod is going to be sheeted elevs instead of open structure.

or worked from within the fuze?????

Paul , I would mount the Elevator and Rudder servos as far forward as you can , The Ziroli DC3's tend to build heavy in the tail and usualy require a lot of nose weight .
I have mounted my servos just ahead of the trailing edge of the wing in the fuselage , and will have enough room to place the fuel tank on the CG forward of the servo's
I will try to post pics sometime this weekend.

mozart03uk , I finaly got to the pics and have loaded them . The elevator servos are not installed but you can see the rail system where they will be mounted ,that does have the rudder servo in place .The elevator servos will be mounted on the underside of the rails . The carbon fiber flex rods for the elevator halves are in place and can be seen in the place on each side within the fuselage

thanks for the pics, it looks great , i like the extra formers
you seem to be using the rudder servo for 2 actions ie
elevator ,and rudder is that tricky to put together,
I had a bit of a scare yesterday when i looked at the fuse standing up on its tail
and sescovered a few formers seemed out of alignment,
have rectified it now and hope the skin will sort that out.

Hi Paul
The servo rails for the elevator and rudder are very simple to construct and install . The exact placement of the rails is not critcal . By placing them as far forward as you can you will reduce the amount of weight you will need to add to the nose of the aircraft for final balancing . The fuselage formers can be difficult to get placed perfectly in position ,but they only have to be reasonably close . The sanding of the planking of the fuselage will be able to hide any reasonable errors int placement of the formers . I built my fuselage using a jig for careful alignment of the fueslage and because of the size of the formers they tend to warp a little , this appears as a slight misalignment from various angles but the overal placement is correct .
I wouldn't be to worried if yours has the same effect.

thats a relief  the former F8 was warped considerably , its reasonable now as this one i think needs to be straight  as this  former is where the back of the wing center section will sit .

are you going to use a fiberglass nose section or built up?

i have a fiberglass nose section and was woundering if solartex would surfice using as little heat as possible perhaps

apologies for bombarding you with all these questions

but as you know there is no instruction book for this plane

which is a pitty, so any help is appreciated

Hi Paul , I will be using the fiberglass nose section as well.I will befiberglassing all empenages and surfaces withe exception to the rudder and elevators. Fiberglassing will add structural strength and it will resist the normal dings better than a fabric covering . I would also suggest looking through the other threads here on RCU . There is great deal of information available in these threads .

heres a little more progress....the outer wing panels are a pretty much a straight fwd build......extra care was taken when glueing the wing tubes in to get them absolutely straight and parallel......the center section shows where the fuel tanks and retract bottle will be mounted. eveything should fit inside the wing...they are 16oz tanks....one for each engine and a robart large air bottle.....enough room for all to fit inside the ribs and not interfear with anything....and last the 2 firewalls drilled for the g-38s and the relief holes cut for the spring starters..the engine is wide enough for the fuel line and throttle pushrod to run outside the firewall so it doesnt get in the way of the retracts which are mounted right behind the engines..more to come soon

a few more pics of some progress...first is with the gear mounted...pretty straight fwd and fit well.....next is with the air bottle and the 16oz fuel tanks installed...an easy fit between the wing ribs...the whole idea is to make the wing self sufficent with the only connection to the fuse is four leads for servo connections.

Hey Gene,

You have great build going on here, I always wanted a nice large DC3's model and now have decided that whenever i will do a DC3 project it will be Ziroli DC3 fully decked out!. This is a great legendry bird and when i flew on it 2 years ago, it was a solid flier by all means and landing speed was 70 Knots only!!, just beautiful bird of all times. Keep it going as we will be learning from your experiances....
