Ames Midwest Multi-Fly Sept 5-6
Time to start hyping the (what is it now, 6th???) Midwest Multi-Fly, the only event of it's kind in this region.
September 5th, 2009 will be the BIG DAY, with food, trophies, premier multi-planes showing off. By popular demand, esp. for those who traveled a ways to get here, we have added Sept 6 (Sunday) for a more informal gathering to include warbirds of any kind AND multi's, with multi's getting the preference for flying times if they wish.
All who have come before know this will be a very friendly, low pressure event (who needs more pressure when you're flying a multi?) THE ONLY condition for entry is to have a plane with more than one working engine at takeoff.
We have a really nice 600ft field this year and a new PetroMat runway.
AMA sanctioned.
Please come! Bring a multi and an appetite.

Thanks,
Mark Taylor

Mark,
Wouldn't miss it, had a blast last year. My Cessna 337 military conversion is just about ready except for engine tuning and a test flight. Glad you got the Petromat down, that'll be a nice addition.[sm=thumbs_up.gif] Ahhh, coffee in the early morning fog, it doesn't get any better than that.

Hi Mark,
We had way to much fun last year to miss it, Chris, Jerry and I have it on our schedule. It's sounding like a couple other club members are planning to make the trip this year also.

Wonderful video Kram. Thanks for posting it. I hope to make it. Work is a little crazy right now. We'll see. We have a local war bird fly in tomorrow. Sunny, 5 MPH winds down the run way, and in the 80s. Pretty good for Ohio. I'm eager to see how many multis make it. I know of one Zirroli P-38 that won't due to a recent crash. I hope to get some video of my P-38 escorting a Don Smith B-17.

Funny you should mention the escort thing.
Last weekend at Owatonna, a coupla gentlemen flying B-17's together invited my P-38 and a P-47 to "escort" their Fortresses flying together. For some reason, the thrill and the honor I got from that was just huge. Sense of history, I guess.
Just like the real thing, about halfway through it I realized I was running about 1/3 throttle.
Hope you can make it. I'll post updates on the local weather as the time gets closer.
Everybody Else: This is the video to which ram refers: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hke9xzsj9H4 .............my first flight of the above green Z-61. I sent it to my email list of known multi-pilots who might come to our event.
Thanks,

Say, do you have the field coordinates for GPS?
Our event went well with great weather and a good turn out, but the B-17 was a no-show. Looks like an escort mission will have to wait till your event, hopefully. We did have a nice Marauder, but I didn't get to fly with him.
My first flight ended with a nose gear that wouldn't come down. I tried everything but no joy so I opted for a main gear only landing to minimize the damage. The nose gear door was shut as well so it seemed like a good option (I was banking that things didn't pop open at the last minute). Came in with full flaps and set her down very gently with a very short slide on the nose. NO DAMAGE! I added some synthetic oil to the system, cycled the gear several times and the second flight went without a hitch. Good day of flying. I have video of the whole thing but haven't downloaded it yet.

Jimmy:
Saturday, September 5th (weather permitting) is THE BIG DAY, starting at 9 AM, with solo time slots for all multi pilots that want one, alot of spectators, catered BBQ, prizes, awards at 6-7 PM, etc..
Sunday, September 6th is our rain-out day. If the weather is good both days, then Sunday will be more of an informal day, when we loosen the restrictions to include any multi or any warbird, with the multi's still getting the preference to solo flight time if they want it. Quite of few of our local Multi pilots and our volunteers have single-engine warbirds they'd like to show off and blow off some of the steam of watching other guys fly all day Saturday.
I'm hoping that having the extra informal day will allow guys who drove from a ways off to have a chance to relax and settle in for the whole weekend or fly a bird they might not have because of mechanical detail or a crosswind on Saturday.
Dang, I hope you can make it! Let me know in advance of the Widow is comin' with ya and I'll charge mine up for the squadron flight!
Bottom Line: If you can only come one day and the weather's good, come Saturday.

I really appreciate high-quality multi-pilots driving that many miles to join us.
Thanks!!
For everybody's benefit, the motels listed on the flyer http://dlgoodri.public.iastate.edu/page10.html are the half dozen or so at I-35 Exit 111, which is closest to the field (7 miles) with no city streets or traffic to navigate. Ames is a small town with no bad neighborhoods and no bad motels (except maybe the Lincoln Lodge!), so anything you find on the internet will be fine.
See ya there!!

New Petromat is down and smooth. Landed several small-geared planes on it this week. Weather is gorgeous. Hope it holds.
Hope to see ya there!

Mark,
The new mat looks great, it'll sure help my 337 which is a little "porky" to get in the air. Your twin looks awesome, and I'm ready for those doughnuts for sure.
