Power for TopFlite DC-3
HI;Just bought one of these at swap!WOndering about power? He said had used OS 40s and also 32s in it.He thought could use OS 25FXs OK but wondering what others think?Have had good luck with the reliability of the OS engines so probably stick with them!Looks like the engines are fairly close together so maybe shouldn't be to bad in an engine out situation.Have only used the 25s on twinstar but that is lot smaller others have always been 40-60 size in larger planes. Thanks!

RE: Power for TopFlite DC-3
Hi!
Use .25 engines!
I have two OS FS .26 four strokes in my Marutaka DC-3 (Weight 3,6kg, span 211cm) and they make the DC-3 perform real well.
Fly most of the time at under half throttle.
I have custom made 3-blade10x4,5" (scale Hamilton standard) carbon fiber props if you are interested.

RE: Power for TopFlite DC-3
That is a bueatiful ship!Just picked up a pair of new OS 32 SXs figure they should be good size little compromise from the fellows that use 40s and still should be a little more than the 25FXs.Always wanted to try them Have a Royal B-25 and 7' PBY on the bench of course they have been on it for an awful long time.HAve just been questioning the glow engines after couple of disasters due to engnie problems.Always haved used 25FPs or Mag 28s suspect some problem on the twinstars was due to small tanks mounted firmly against the wood and always look to be foaming!Have used46FXs with very good luck but ships were bigger and had much better tank mounting situations!THis DC-3 has larger tanks and mounted inboard on the wing center section!Props look nice but probably to big for these engines.

RE: Power for TopFlite DC-3
Hi- I too will be starting to build my TF DC-3 and still wondering about engine selection. It seems OS doesn't make the 40LA any more (only 46LA) and I can't find any mention of 32SX on the OS web site. Am I missing something?
I'm guessing those in the know would agree OS 46LA would be too much, but I know these run well and are reasonably priced.

Hi!
I can assure you that if you build it light , around 3,5-4kg a pair of OS LA .25 engines are perfect for the Top Flite DC-3.
Problem is that too many modelers think that larger engines, .32 or .40 is better! They are not!!!!

RE: Power for TopFlite DC-3
I wanted to fly mine with a pair of four strokes. Wanted either a .30 or .40 so I decided on the OS FS40. Haven't flown it yet but I am breaking in the engines on a Twinstar (6.1lbs./2770g). I expect my C-47/R4D to come in between 9 and 10 lbs, a little heavier than jaka's. The FS40s should be plenty of power even though I fly at a higher altitude than most (7200ft.)

Hey Scott,
Do you have any pics of how you mounted the retracts? They should be pretty solid if mounted correctly....
Check out RCDon http://www.rcdon.com/html/ec-47n__video.html This is his construction and flight video of his TF C-47. He had a bumpy landing and the retracts stood up well.
