Default Yellow p-38 questions

I am going to buy a yellow aircraft p-38. How hard are these to fly? I have been flying for 5 years. I have been into scale for about a year. I have been flying a Top Flite p-51, non scale Hanger 9 pulse 40, Stryker, Sundowner 60 with Jett motor. I have world model p-47, Top flite Corsair (building) Top flite b-25( NIB). I am thinking about doing 38's or 45's for motors in the P-38. DO i need to counter rotate one motor? Is it easier to fly with them? Should i get Brakes? What about gyros? I am planning on building the P-38 then fly it later in the year after i get some good time with the p-47, and b-25. What do u guys think? What steps would you suggest? I would not mind doing a Yellow p-40. But i would prefer a p-38.

I bought a Yellow P-38 for my first twin. It came with G-38's on ignition. Flew great. Came in at 36 pounds also. The plane is still around too.
They are very easy to fly. You don't need a counter rotating prop. Use a GYRO. I would use a lite 40 to 50 cc ignition engine (FPE 2.4 or 3.2 or a DA-50) with scale size 3 blade props. About the lightest you can make a Yellow P-38 is 32 pounds.

If you are building one to be lite, GOOD LUCK. You can build a Ziroli P-38 the same weight as a Yellow P-38 with a 14 inch bigger wing.

I would use brakes, unless you are trying to loose weight.

Rebel

BTW. I have a Yellow P-38 (BUILT) I might part with cheap too. LMK

Madness, i have a p-38 flying on two DA50's and it is awsome. I've also had one with two G-38's and it flew quite well with that power also. The flying of the airplane is very straight forward it really doesn't have any bad habits to it that i have found . This current one with the DA's has a gyro mixed in with the rudders only and then i also found that if you mix the rudders and ailerons together it improves the turns also but you only need to put about 5 to 10 % of rudder in there. As for the balance i moved it back about a 1/2" from where they say but to start out go with the recomended location. If you go to page 11 on the warbirds forum you can see a quick video of a fly by of mine from this summer.

Hello Greg

i have nearly finished my yellow p38. it is one of the old polyester kits.
i have powerd it also with two DA50. they are running fine but i have trouble with my selfmade silencer. they are break a lot of times even on ground runnings.
can you show me some pictures of your silencers?

and last, did you use the orig. gear. for me it looks a bit flimpsy. what are you experience?

fasteddi, I can take a picture of the muffler for you tommorrow, but i had them made and machined out of solid aluminium by a friend that owns a CNC machine. As for the landing gear, ( they are the original gear sold by yellow aircraft) i have never had any problems with them braking like other people have said on here in other posts. They must just be landing poorly or on to rough a field, granted i fly off a ashpalt runway all the time but i have flown out of grass fields with it to and have never had a problem with the gear.

fasteddi, Here are the pictures i said i would get you. The sizes are as follows, the front is 3/4'' wide the back is 1 1/8" wide. the length is 3 3/4" & the height is 1 3/8".The pipe is a 1" outlet there is no baffles in the chamber at all. If you would like to see a short video of the plane go to the warbird forums and search for my video of the plane. I listed it under Greg Wright p-38. I think it's on page 11. Good Luck !! i hope this helps you.

Hope this thread is not too old but I am building a Yellow P-38 as well and went with RCGF 45cc engines. How do you have the ignition(s) set up? I was planning to use one large 4.8V (4400 Nimh) for both ignitions and have a smart-fly ignition cutoff power to both engines at the same time. But the Y does not have the correct male/female connectors. I was also planning to use two 2300 6V Nimh batteries for the receiver/servos.

Thanks, Mike

Thanks for your reply. I decided on separate batteries for the ignitions as well. I went with two JR 4.8V 2300 Mah NiMh for the ignitions and two JR 6.0V 2300 Mah NiMh for my power expander sport plus and bought an extra optical cutoff so I will have two cut-offs on a single channel. With the two big 45cc engines, I hope I don’t need to add too much if any weight to the nose! Having a little heartache with the gear installation...
