Bargain OV-10 Bronco 52"

For those of you wanting to try a twin or those who want a back up, Hobby Hangar (www.hobbyhangar.com) is closing out its remaining stocks of the ScaleTech 52" ARF at the incredible price of $135! It has built a great reputation over time as being a great flyer and very complete ARF package. They probably won't last long.................

That Bronco is a great flying plane. I extended the wings on the one I had about two bays on each side. Had OS .25FX for power and Robart Retracts. Its a tight fit for things in a small plane, but can be done.

Thanks for the pointer, I ordered two, not that I need them but what the heck! Jerry.

Thanks for the headsup Aeroscale, as a result of this thread I did order one and it got here just yesterday morning. After doing the initial test flights for a fellow oh about 8 or 9 years ago on a Rich Urivitch bult one I always though I would like one of my own that 50 inch ship had magnum 28's but my will have either a pair of OS 25AX's or 35AX's. Will have to dig to see what is in my stashes.

Anyway after the first look I am quite happy with the quality. Likely will replace some of the hardware but thats no big deal.

John:)

I got mine done with a couple of 25 electrics. Some points of interest I found. The elevator linkage didn't work for me. I installed a slim aileron servo running the servo wire through the linkage tube. The plastic parts are very brittle, I ended up glassing the back side of the cowls to strengthen the plastic. Used all the hardware in the kit. Certainty not worth the 200+ they were getting prior to this sale. I'd say the kit is worth the $135 we spent. Jerry.

A couple other points about my experience with the Bronco. Due to the fact that the elevator is small, AND pretty much sits up out of the airstream of the props, you will have to have enough air going over the elevator (ground speed) to get it to rotate. Initially, The full size Bronco kind of has a nose-down stance when on the ground. I couldn't get that to work for me, I had to keep extending the nose gear to bring it up more toward level to get it to rotate better. Once it's in the air and the gear comes up, it's a pretty fast mover, but a very stable airplane and had no bad habits I could find.

Interesting, I left mine fixed gear but I got a second kit sitting here to put retracts under. I did put a larger nose wheel on the bird. As bouncy as our field is I might be fine if I catch the bounce just right! I'll have to report back after I give it a maiden. Too cold and windy for that right now. Jerry.

Well finally got around to putting the little Bronco together. I choose to use two servos on the elevator rather than the single option and used HS 225's. The engines are new OS .35AX's. The cowlings were garbage and would crack just breathing on them! So I am going with naked engines. Actually almost all of my multi bashes are naked and I much prefer that and as well as safer in operations.

I was sitting staring at my Sea Kaos and the light bulb came on, I can use 36 inchers with cantilever single streamline struts on both ships. Since I plan on more trips down to Lake Havasu this years after I acquired my nice trailer I am working feverishly on the float set up to be interchangeable, not for the same day but different trips.

Kaos on floats, who knew? Looks like a Bendix racer. Let's see, Jett 50 engine and pipe, buried servos, retractable water rudder. You need this. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Simco it actually has a rear exhaust Rossi .61 with a full wave pipe and its interesting that this airplane and float combo is the only one with my limited skills that I have ever been able to acheve a knife edge loop with:)

Here is another of my float planes from Mister Joe a Bridi Sun Fly 3 which is now a successful cross country float plane.

I can do knife edge loops as well, Too bad NONE have come out right yet! Flea bay sells key fob cameras that I have installed via Velcro onto my float planes. Fun to watch and warm them up if they get dunked. 30 minute times for your extended flights

I had a Urivitch bronco, fast, manueverable, great looking in the air, just don't lose an engine. I lost an engine and didn't realize it and in my turn the thing went bananas, looked like an egg beater. I cut the other engine and regained control fairly easy, so you might want to ready your self for an engine out, and remember NEVER turn on a dead engine, keep the running engine underneath you in a turn.

I have had one of these kit built OV-10 for about 10 years, many flights. Two OS 25 SF engines. Great flying plane, looks good, get CG right, as mentioned above use reliable engines, doesn't like to fly on one.

Hey guys, a couple of months down the line now and an update on what went on with my float Bronco project. OK after flying (and enjoying) the little Bronco for several weeks I begin to realize that the additional weight of the cantilever floats (pictured earlier in this thread) was going to be impractical. The airplane is a bit of a little hot rod but at a wing loading that another pound and a half of float installation was going to put take off and landing speeds a little to high for floats, at least that is my opinion.

So it seems that especially since this little guy made a very big impression on the fellows and since there was an RC Pro warbird race coming up, I once agine was dragged kicking and screaming back into the frying pan. I have been trying to kick back and smell the roses for a while albeit without much luck.

Within the RC Pro rule book there is a 10% handicap for multi engine airplanes and the performance seem to fit right into the bronze class of this bracket style racing. Well once agine committed I foraged around for a pair of .25 sized Ultra Thrust quarter wave pipes I just happened to have from other multi's and they marred up real nice to the awesome OS .35AX's.

I was able to get in many practice flights with this combo and the performance was well spectacular as a warbird pylon ship. OK on to the raceday: In a word successful and not even an activity I had originally envisioned for this arf. In short it was a three round day and I had one break out (to fast) and I finished fourth out of ten in class entries. This little ship was a success others enjoyed watching a type (multi not common in pylon). The airplane was a problem and liable for break out so in the future I may race her agine but in the silver bracket instead.

Now this ARF is the one that was is the subject of this thread and just so not everything is all perfect and they never are: The plastics on this airplane (fuselage nose cone, cowlings and fuselage tail cone) is garbage. The cowls were not even usable out of the box and the were so thin that just handling them they fell apart. This for me was no big loss since I prefer to mount my engines in a different orientation anyway to present simple access to needles and fueling, as well as allow for the longer ultra thrusts pipes.

On to the fuselage nose and tail cones, agine far to thin and although the lasted a bit longer and were factory installed they soon started cracking just from simple handling, in fact the large tail cone started to fall off during the races. So just taped it up with plentiful supply of packaging tape.

So in summation the airplane was successful for me although not what was originally intended and is great fun to fly so mine will receive some new balsa nose and tail cones but not cowlings which I prefer to do without, and will be enjoyed down the line for some more fun racing.

John:cool:

Will get some pics up in a moment.
