Was talking with Kram and decided to start this thread. Here's a picture of some of us at Bomber field at last years B-17 gathering. Mine is third one back. And my Don Smith B-17. We have a great photographer in the club.

Same year Texas Raider parked next to Frank's "Yankee Lady," a somewhat shinier plane with Saito .91's and a much more experienced pilot Both planes still fly, mine after considerable rehab for a centerwing section that started to sorta crumble with age |

2012 The "Iowa Bomber Boys" after a successful 4-ship mission at Dwayne's farm in Radcliffe I'm the young one with a shirt superstition |
Kram, how far are y'all from Shreveport La? We've got a bomber buddy there we plan to see at their warbird. He's building a DS Connie and highly modified B-17. There was a single B-17 modified with RR engines, he's building that one and has the Lancaster style nacelles for it.

Frank's massive Don Smith 14-ft "Dina Might" The size difference with only 2 ft more wing span is intimidating DLE-20's |
Forgot to mention the owners of the other bombers. The last plane in line (B-24) belongs to Mike Liable out of Houston. The first one in line belongs to Gary Smith in our club, ARCA, DS B-17. The second in line belongs to Randy Larson, DS B-17, out of our club also. He has two DS B-17's. He also had an American Eagle but sold it to a bomber newbie also in our club, Devon McDaniel. There is a cool story behind most of the bombers in the club, they were all built by the same guy, Larry Wells out of Mo. Randy followed a rumor trail and found a nest of B-17's in Mo, 6 in all. Larry was a very prolific builder. But age finally caught up with him so he sold all his bombers. We got five of them in our club. The sixth one went to a guy in New Jersy. It was a matter of money and planes all showing up at the right time.
Edwin Almost forgot, the crowds at the events love seeing a line of bombers with engines running waiting to take off. What a thrill, love it. |
Looks like those dle20's fit pretty good in the cowl on that 14' B-29. Exactly what I wanted to see. The video I saw was inspiring. I'll be spending this year buying the fourth engine and the rest of the material and plan to start on it about this time next year. Got to clear the projects on the building boards first, then build an expansion on my center work bench to accommodate the fuse and a wing panel. My wings are removable, but the center section stays attached to the fuse. Transport is a 20' cargo trailer.

When I bought my B-17, it came with OS 91 pumpers. I took them off since they were discontinued and 9 years old. I put saito 100's on. Good power. Larry plumbed it for brakes and smoke but never added it so I did it with the refurbishment. Adds a wow factor to the flight. But note to self, put smoke switch on the right side of the transmitter. While fumbling for it I inadvertently reduced throttle and nearly stalled. Dumb, dumb, dumb mistake. All I have on the left side now is retracts and flaps. Landing lights, smoke, and brakes are on the right side.

If it has more than one engine, bring it on. Civilian planes too. Would like to open up discussions on setups for multi newbies.
Edwin Almost forgot, tell us about it. Sad to say I lost my B-25 last weekend to an engine out. Was a highly modified H9 done up as Axis Nightmare. Edwin http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/atta...mentid=2152503 |
