RE: scratch built c130
John,
That looks good since you sanded all the foam blocks. Any idea of what the overall weight is so far? Mike |
RE: scratch built c130

RE: scratch built c130
Did u do the plans your self or did u download them from a site???
|
RE: scratch built c130
the plans are from a 1956 set of control line plans.. it was 6 foot. and i had them inlarged to 12 foot plus.. so iam using the outlines and going from there on putting it together. its getting big and heavy...

RE: scratch built c130
weight the plane.. body in pics 19 lbs
wings 4 lbs each center section 3 lbs total 30 lbs so far.. est finished 50 to 60 lbs john |
RE: scratch built c130
John,
Your numbers make me worry that my built-up AC-130 will be heavy. I would have thought you foam construction would have been very light. Personally, I'm hoping for a 40lbs target weight-dry. I will have to be very light when I glass my project to prevent any excessive weight. DO you think you .65s will be enough engine? You might need to jump into the .90 motors if it gets too heavy. RE: scratch built c130
ORIGINAL: longflyer weight the plane.. body in pics 19 lbs wings 4 lbs each center section 3 lbs total 30 lbs so far.. est finished 50 to 60 lbs john If there is a possibility, try to make new wing cores from white foam also, this will cut down more weight and plane will fly better. Only parts i made from blue foam is the tailplane section and that is only due to 3 fins only as i needed alot of strength there. Are you planning to balse sheet the wings and fuselage or just glass it directly?. |
RE: scratch built c130
planning to glass body and wings.. tail is going to be fabric covered.. auto paint for finish maybe.
the spars in the wings are carbon fiber.. just like the windrose that i built with 50 foot wings.. maybe i will have to go to 90s... i'll 65's first. |
RE: scratch built c130
forgot to add
the foam on the body is only a inch thick in most places.. the formers were lightened so the body is pretty hollow. tail surfaces are on the heavy side... thats why all the holes.. took off about 2 lbs.. i'm going to have 3 battery packs and motores are ahead of cg. |
RE: scratch built c130
Do you know what resin will you be using for the glassing, i would still make new wings if possible. that is going to be very heavy model, what is your wing loading going to be?
|
RE: scratch built c130
anybody have suggestions for the hinges.. need something strong for surfaces....
|
RE: scratch built c130
is it me, or do the wings have a slight anhedral? is this the weight of the foam itself? this makes me ask is the wing spar design up to having 4 engines mounted, with all the associate plumbing, electrics, wiring etc? may i suggest a load test, to establish this? how thick is the carbo spar at the moment? re the empennage, is that solid balsa, or sheet on frame? sorry about all the questions, better to get it right now, than at the field ;)

RE: scratch built c130
the carbon fiber spars are 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch tapering to the tip.. the wings will be st8 on top side ... only had one bolt in the spars to take pics. the body is stringers and foam.. i now have everything glassed.. doing the the tail in 1.7oz dacron... one primer coat on and started sanding... i'm planning two coats of primer.. most of it will be sanded off.. maybe auto lacquer for finnish,, not decided yet.... working engine mounts at present.

RE: scratch built c130
Looks good. But after I got it all glassed I would reach inside the fuse and remove as much as possible of the excess foam and bulkheads... Four 65's will fly 50 lbs but loose and engine or 2 and your in trouble...

RE: scratch built c130
