UAV design - data transmission/transmission systems
Hello,
I am looking for some advice from experts such as yourselves! I’m involved with a UAV design project at university (the same one as DeadBoy), and was looking for some information on data transmission and transmission systems. Basically we are relative novices in this field and would be grateful of any assistance.
We’re trying to design a Micro UAV which could be used in military applications to seek out enemy soldiers, snipers, etc. and transmit pictures and navigation data from the UAV back to the troops. Does anyone have any good information in this area or any good resources we could use?
Thanks a lot,
Merchant

I believe it was posted by a moderator that UAV discussions were not going to be covered... Posting practical military application information is just asking for problems.

Well its been discussed before plus data transmission is hardly going to affect national security

in the r/c field, we usually only use stock transmitters/receivers to communicate, and it has no video or audio signal. just plain data signal. This may not be the place to ask.

no problem. I am not saying you will not be able to find answers here, but i doubt it. an electronic engineer would be the person to ask.

Yeah, thanks for your help.
I think people are reluctant to talk to me cos i'm talking about UAV.
I will try to find someone at my university or on another forum.
Cheers,
Merchant

RE: UAV design - data transmission/transmission systems
i have come accross a telemetry system from eagle tree that gives altitude, bearing, speed, ETC. also, you can find little micro cameras, but they have no audio. shop around here, i am sure you will find a nice one. the higher the transmission wattage the better. another problem that you may face is range. our transmitters have a range of about 2.5 miles. you will have to find a little camera with a lot of broadcasting power in order to match that.

Well I don't think that the preventative factor here is so much that the parts to build such a thing aren't available, but that--for the most part--they are extremely expensive.
.....
If all you want to do is transmit pictures back to an operator, that's easy: it's called "use a big dish antenna on the operator's station".
If you want to be able to transmit signals to the far-away UAV, then it needs a special antenna system called an "active phased-array antenna". These require a navigation computer with GPS and a gyroscope/compass, because the computer must be able to track which direction the base station is in, and adjust the antenna accordingly. The principles are simple and the parts are available, but this is not a small project.
