Default Anyone build a flying lawn mower?

Has anyone built and flown the Flying lawn Mower? I just ordered the plans from RCM and was curious as to how it flew. I've only seen video of one flying and it really didn't look too stable.
Thanks,
Randy

My guess is that it flies a lot like the Snoopy dog house, which is to say, you're right, it's not too stable. I've never flown it (the Snoopy) but I've seen it, and it looked like it flew like a somewhat heavy pizza box flyer, which, essentially, is what it is.

I have scratch built one and it is really stable. It also performs quite nice loops and rolls. Mine is made out of depron & balsa. I will attach photos later

I was at a full scale airshow once and an RC team was there for a noon demo. They flew all kinds of giants, 3D, warbirds ... but when that Snoopy Dog House went up, it drew more attention then all the other planes combined. Needless to say it came down real hard and was pretty well beat up, but that even added to the crowds pleasure.

I'm thinking of getting me one of the Snoopy Dog house kits. Kids REALLY love watching them fly too!

I remember reading somewhere a long time ago that the dog house was difficult to get back upright if it went inverted, and seems to me I saw one on a video once that flopped upside down, and the guy did either a half inside or outside loop to get it back upright. Either one would probably be a crowd pleaser though. I've been building multi engine stuff lately and thought I'd do something different. Far as I know, no one in our club has one.
Thanks for the info guys.

Hi,

I have a flying lawn mower that I fly regularly in airshows and fly-ins. It's the TMP (Tennesee Model Products) Zimpro kit. (A short kit, but all you need)

[link]http://www.pub.nxs.net/dehunt/mower.htm[/link]

Mine is powered with an OS 61SF, APC 12x8 prop and a Jerry Smith Power pipe. It will go vertical on take off, loop inside and out, roll, inverted, harrier............more than you would ever think it should do. Everyone is amazed at how well it flys. With a little practice, you can land it like a butterfly with sore feet. It will even hang on the prop for a little while. I would like to say that it is very difficult to fly and that it takes all my years of piloting skills just to fly it, but I can't. It's a piece of cake to fly and I regularly pass the transmitter around to prove it.

Thanks for the info, guys. I wasn't even aware that anyone made a kit for it. Must have to call TMP for a price since I couldn't find it anywhere on their site. I'll wait to see what the RCM plans look like, but may just go with the kit. According to RCM, theirs flys with a .46 so it must be smaller, or maybe not. I typically put .60's where they call for .40's!

I built one from a Flyingthingz kit. I has an OS .46 and isn't stable but not hard to fly either. Lots of fun and quite a crowd pleaser.

Could you please resend the pictures, for some reason Henry and I did not get them [] Resend the pictures to [email protected], and my personal e-mail [email protected] . Do you need a pilot for the second Sky cutter I'm sure you will agree with me. The mower could Hariet better than our 3-D planes. I'm looking forward to your e-mail [8D]

The second mower your building, is it the first Sky Cutter by FlyingThingZ or the Second Version

Go check out the updated Manuel for the Sky Cutter V-2 http://www.flyingthingz.com/manuals/...20V2%20Web.pdf

Thanks

I recently completed the V2 kit by flyingthingz.com and I am impressed with it. I mounted a OS .56SX up front. It flys best at about half throttle. Some advice I recommend is that you add a 1/8" or 3/16" shim behind the top of the motor mount to give it some down thrust. I have my model balanced as directed but it still likes to climb and fly very nose high under power. I know this is a trait of the design but it is much nicer to fly with the downthrust added. It puts the mower ata more realistic attitude. Also when completed as per the plan the servo tray sits so high in the fuse that the servo horns (and required hardware attaching linkages to he horns) rub the inside of the topcover, creating drag and scratching grooves in the wood. Other than that I used 1/4" ply for the handle brackets and I used a bunch of epoxy and 3 small button head screws at all the junctions on the handle assembly.

It is a crowd pleaser but it definatly requires a lot of attention in the air and I would say it is the hardest model to fly in my hangar. I have a video on my site that you can check out.

good luck,

Larry

Did this thread just fade out? I am interested in a Sky Cutter, but the web site doesn't respond to my trying to purchase anything. I called and got a service disconnected message, and my emails have bounced back.
