Default Toro Robotic Mower into an RC Painball Gun

This is a project I and a few friends of mine from school are working on. Our school (Alexandria Technical College) was donated 3 Toro I-mows. For one of our classes we need to build some type of automated project. So we are taking two of the three mowers and turning them into a RC operated machine, then once we get that working we will build our paint gun turret for the front of it. We ordered Spektrum's new 5channel radio system to control the project.

Here are a few pictures of what we have so far. Our radio system and speed controller are on order so we should get them this week. More pictures are to come.

Here is a picture of our Radio and speed controller. We hooked everything up and our RC Toro moves! The 24V system overpowers the ESC so we had to use only one 12v battery on the testing, its kinda slow. We ordered two 24V ESCs so we can make them go faster and another radio for the other robot. Now we just need to finish up the turret design.

yeah, im going to guess that they will be the only ones of their kind in the world. I mean the RC paintgun part is allover but a radio controlled Toro i-Mow doesnt exist, besides ours. Brand new those mowers ran about 1200 dollars, i doubt anyone has ever gutted one for RC. Ill for surely get a video or two on youtube sometime soon.

Here is a video of what we have as of today, we have two working RC toros now but waiting on a batterypack thats on special order. The rurret is still being worked on. We just need to figureout how to turn and raise the gun. Probably going to do so with high torque servos.

We had alot of glitching problems, once we figured them out we continued building the turret. Here is now what it looks like

After we showed our instructor that we are able to figure out ways to make this project work he wanted us to have fully automatic guns. So we went and got two Spyder MR2 guns for our final versions of the project. We got a RC activated relay and put it into the handle of our new guns by unsoldering the existing switch. Now we are figuring out balance points so we can get the most mechanical advantage just from mounting points. In one picture you can see two of our group members disassembling the gun and marking the cut out points on the plexiglass for our new turret. Ill get a new video on youtube soon.

Are you going to mount a wireless camera onto the gun so you can see what it is pointed at?

not right away, but we would like too. I have been trying to find a small enough screen that would be able to mount to the top of our radios. I am able to find cameras, its just a matter of finding a small enough compatible screen.
