Default what about a chainsaw motor

Is there anything that people use chainsaw motors for in RC?

The best use for chainsaw motors is in the clearing of trees, so as to make a new flying field.

IMO

Most of the older RC gas engines were from chainsaws. Quadra 35 and 42 were Frontier/TML saws and the 50 was from Pioneer chainsaw.

Chainsaw engines are traditionally either a two-stroke gasoline (petrol) internal combustion engine (usually with a cylinder volume of 30 to 120 cm3) or an electric motor driven by a battery or electric power cord. In a petrol chainsaw, fuel is generally supplied to the engine by a carburetor at the intake.

could be interesting for fun but not sure that it will really be a good motor for RC

You know conversion motors were a great route for quite awhile.. but eventually the Chinese knock off motors ...sort of ended people converting as many as before.

I was just looking a 1/5 scale Yokosuka D4Y "Judy" plan on outerzone from 1981. The engine in the build article was a McCulloch 'Husky' chainsaw motor conversion. That was probably a great solution in the '80s but purpose built RC gassers are available now and "relatively" cheap......

It's a nice looking airplane. The Husky would have been about a 33 cc engine so anything around that size would probably work. it's interesting that the plane was maidened with a Webra .90 on a reduction drive. I occasionally do an engine conversion but it is mostly "just because I can" rather than from any practicality.

A friend and I converted a couple Mcculloch 25 2 strokes. They were maybe as strong as a G23.. but they ran so smooth. If yu put them on the right sized plane they flew very nice.. They shook less than most purpose built gas engines.. and the planes would not sit and shake bad on the ground. We had fun with them, and I think thats what I have in my 80 inch ME 109 I built from enlarged Guillows plans.

this video I always crack up because we were experimenting with a small modified push mower muffle on the plane..

They are heavy but I think that big old flywheel that a lot of those engines had helps smooth things out a bit.

Nice bird. Heck of a project going from Guillows kit to 81" span!
