Default Skidoo Rev XP snowmobile hop-up

Here is my new project

First project - New Bright nitro conversion can be found here: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_9404211/tm.htm

I have started this about two weeks ago and have put a lot of thought and experimentation into the engineering of this sled.

Stock, this is a "slowmobile" and not a snowmobile so I have decided to perform major surgery on it.

This sled is much smaller then the New Bright as you can see from the pictures so I will be keeping it all electric.

I have plans to put in a 28mm Himax Brushless 480, 400watt 3000kv-4000kv motor upgrade along with a Castle Creations Mamba Sidewinder ESC and new RC grade radio equipment and possibly some suspension upgrades.

The parts are on order and I should be receiving them within the next day or so.

Trial fitting a stock can brushed 480 motor to the chassis to make sure it fits and comparing the stock with the longer motor.

Next order of business is to fix the steering. Stock, there is limited steering due to a restrictive plastic lip on the ski arm.

I removed the lip and placed a washer over where it was previously located.

I am hoping to use the existing stock gearbox.

Seems to have a 8:1 gear ratio.

I'm not sure if the nylon gears will be able to stand the torque of the new motor so I wil be spending some time on this making sure the new pinion gear and motor mounting meshes nicelywith the other gears..

I would hope you keep this post around here, this forum was the original RC snowmobile forum, existed with RC sled threads long before rc toys poped up
it might be toy grade but after we mod it, its just another RC

Well yes, I wasn't sure where to post my snowmobile projects because they seem to be all over the place.

The good news is that I have some of the same stuff for this project posted in "Toy Grade RC Products" and some here with links back and forth to both.

Some of this same info for my Rev XP build up can be found in the Toy Grade section under reganmus's thread entitled: "MXZX Snowmobile".

Stay tuned for more!

I was able to use the stock gear box using the following replacement pinion purchased from TowerHobbies:

LXEX11 Robinson Racing Pinion Gear 48P 13T

This needed some tweaking to mesh the gears nicely. I removed this little washer to make a better fit:

Here is a picture of the Skidoo XP with all of the new equipment in it.

I test ran this in my basement last night and it seems to really move.

I am a bit worried that the stock gearbox will not hold up with all th power and torque.

Big snow coming this weekend so maybe I'll be able to get some video - if I can drag my wife out into the snow to help out.

One last thing, steering works great now and it turns on a dime.

The sled looks awesome..have you tried it in light snow yet? I am in current modifications of the same sled and was wondering if you could clarify the details for your motor as I want to use the same on my upgrades.. Thanks again.

Yes

I recently tried it in hard packed snow. Works pretty good and is pretty fast but tends to tip over if you turn to sharply. I may insert some tow-out on the ski's and probably add some suspension mods at some point (at-leat better front shocks).

I am in the process of working over some details with Hirrican-Fibers to try and tweak it some.

The motor details are in this thread along with the spur gear a purchased but I'll re-cap here:

Himax Brushless 480 size (28mm diameter)
400watt
3500-4500kv
Castle Creations Sidewinder ESC with reverse.

Purchased from RCDude.com
I am using 3 cell Lipo packs (1300mah-2200mah)

Another modification

The track slips at high RPM because it is not tight enough to the wheels and drive wheel so, I moved the rear wheels back from their original location about 3-4/16 of an inch. This tightened things up and reduced the slipping.

I'll try to add a picture of this later.

Hi Joe, just purchased one of these "slowmobile" it was used for 10min. for 30$ not bad i think? She's all stripped but having hard time taking the motor pinion off. I noticed your stock motor still has the pinion on, how did you get it off the transmission? Also how much run time do you have on this thing and is the stock transmission still holding up? I Might have more ?'s later hopefully you don't mind helping out.

thanks
Harry

Edit again, guess no ones home? anyway i ended up cutting the motor shaft to get it off the trans.
Still need to find out if the trans. has held up to the punishment.
Also is that a micro servo?
