hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok well I have been getting a lot of emails about my builds on these newbright sleds.
So I am in the middle of a new build I am going for 50mph or better with this one.
I have been trying to make it so anyone with a drill and hacksaw can make all the parts (well not the wheels)
you can use the ones that come on the newbright sleds, if you look at my other posts you will see I used them.
Well lets get to it shall we.
all the aluminum I am using is 3/8 square bar / 3/16 x 0.049 tube / 3/8 round bar
all the bolts are 4/40 allen head bolts and they range in length.

Ok now the first thing is strip everything out.
next thing is you need to mark out 4 holes that you need to drill in the tunnel for adding the suspension
Now if you follow this the track will be nice and tight and won't slip, I have done many tests to make sure this works well I can do wheelies and have had no problems.

Almost forgot you will not be able to drill the holes in the tunnel straight from the inside so
what I do is heat up a large pin holding it with needle nose pliers then when its hot push it through from the inside this way you will have a small hole that you can use
as a guide to drill from the out side of the tunnel.

here is the link for the pics first

Ok now from the center of the main driveshaft your first hole in the tunnel will be (3" 7/8) then the next one will be (7" 3/4) now this one is 1/2 inch from the bottom of the tunnel, you can see this in the picture.
I draw a line to make sure the holes are in the right place's, now do this for both sides.

Now for the suspension parts
I did have 4 wheels in there but I wanted it to go lower for speed and the shock was hitting it when it gets to low.
Now the wheels on the wood are the ones that go in the tunnel this pic is just to show you how it all looks when set-up in the sled

start with 2 pieces of 3/8 square bar they will be (8" 1/4 long) now the first hole is (1/4 inch) from the end, next now this is for the shock (1 inch) from the first hole
now the next one is right in the center at (3 7/8) next one start from the other end of the bar the first one is (1/4 inch) from the end then the last hole you have to drill is (2" 5/8) from the center of the last hole.
Now the spacing it will depend on what you use for the wheels.
All you have to do is make sure they sit close and keep the track in line, like the stock ones do, you can always use the stock one I use the (3/16 x 0.049 tube and put the wheels on it.
Now the reason I like using this tubeing is cause you don't have to drill it out just run a 4/40 tap through it thats it.
pictures always help so have a look

The tunnel spacing is (4 1/8) across
Now for the arm's that hold the suspension in place
Start with 2 pieces of 3/8 square bar they will be (6" 1/8 long)
First hole is (1/4 inch) from the end next one is (2" inch) from the first one this one is used for a cross brace.
Now the last hole will be (5" 9/16) from the first hole you drilled.
again the cross brace length will depend on what you use for the wheels always leave enough room so everything move freely.

Now for a few more pics to show it all together, an you can see that now matter where I put it the track will always stay at the same tension.

One final note MAKE SURE ALL WHEELS USED ARE (1 1/2 INCH) they all need to be the same size for this to work.
The main drive wheels are and the other wheels in the stock sled are (1 1/2 inch) but the back one is not so don't use it with this set up.

If there is anything else you would like to know please ask.
Now keep watching for the next posts to come.

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
I bet a lot of people were asking questions after seeing yours go. I t was cool to start a info thread to show how its done.

Lorduss 01-01-2010 02:16 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
nice job keeping the tension up, all current RC sleds lack proper geometry for the track drive.
now that thing just needs some paddles

hurricane-fibers 01-02-2010 08:36 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Today I am going to show you the main drive.

Now to start off the hub that holds the drive wheels is (1" round bar by 13/16 inch long)
To make this all you will need is a drill and a hacksaw.
This will fit snug in the drive wheels and you will then have to drill the holes for mounting it.
Now don't tell the wife she would kill me I cut up a star screwdriver all most all of them are 1/4 inch shaft you will need this for the drive axle it is 6" inch's long
Now to the hub drill a 1/4 inch right in the middle all the way through drill slow and use oil you want it to be straight and a snug fit to the shaft.

next you will need to drill 3 holes in the side evenly spaced out around the hub this will be for the set-screws to hold it to the shaft I use (6-32 by 3/16 long allen key set-screws you can get them at any hardware store)
now make sure you get the right size drill bit for the tap that you will use to tap the holes for the set-screws.

you can see in the pic the black marks on the sides this is so you know were they are when you drill the holes for the allen bolts that we will use to hold the drive wheels on.
now before you drill these holes lets get the drive wheels prepped and ready.

now you can use a dremel for this, you can see it the one pic there is already 3 spots evenly spaced out around the wheel inside this is were I drill them now use a
1/8 drill bit for this.
Then you will need to drill a 1/4 inch through the center now look close at the 2 pics and you can see what I am talking about.

now once you have this all done test thread all the bolts and make sure they thread in easy REMEMBER USE LOTS OF OIL WHEN DRILLING AND TAPPING.

Now you will be turning the wheels around so that more of the fins will be grabbing the track as you can see.
I have included on the pictures the factory set to show the difference.
Now this is part of the reason so many people get track slipping, there is just not enough there to grab the small fins on the track.
Doing this will help tons I never have the track slip any more since I have done this.

The bearings I used are (1/4 X 5/16 they fit nice and snug to the shaft just lightly tap them down into place.
On the one side you will have to trim off the little fin that is there to hold the factory plastic bushing, with these bearings
you can still use the cover and it will hold all the bearings in place.

now in the last pic this is how it should look with the allen bolt all done up I use small lock washers the last thing you need is one of them coming lose.

If there is any thing else you would like to know just ask I would be glad to help.

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok here is another update.

I am using a medusa brushless 36/70 2300kv as I said I want to go fast so I hope it can take it will see when its done.
3.6 to 1 for the gearing and a 4 cell lipo so that means my track will be spinning at over 9600 rpm wow I just realised just how fast this should go
the other motor it would only be running around 8000 rpm's man this is going to be fun to break LOL

Now today I put the motor and drive system in.
I am still using belt drive pulleys but you can do the same thing and use gears instead just make the hub the same way as the one for the drive wheel on the track.
Then all you would have to do is bolt the spur gear to the new hub.
I used my drill and hacksaw for all this to show that yes it can be done with simple hand tools (well all but the idler wheel for the belt) you can put a small idler gear instead) just make sure when you bolt everything in
its true and straight.
Always double check before you drill the holes, the mount is made from 2" X 3" X 1/8 angle.
Now you will have to trim a bit inside for this.
Make sure you use washers and put at least 4 bolts for mounting the motor in, you don't want to have it come lose and make a mess inside there do you LOL.

and here is 2 more pics with the track all done up and it still stays flat no matter what LOL.

Now to get back to work
More to come so keep watching.

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok here it is finally finished

Well first here is the links to the pics.

one last one all together and ready to rock.

Now I won't get into much here cause I know you all know how to hook up steering linkage one that works real well is the small ones from a traxxas jato mine are 3" inch long.
and then I used all the rod ends from a traxxas jato also.
now all you need to do is drill with a 1/8 bit an then bolt them in they fit perfect.
now the aluminum for the shock is just a piece of channel I got from canadian tire.
I also put braces in for the control arms if you don't the plastic will break
By putting the bars out near the edge and not all the way to the middle this help to make them stronger and less chance you will bend them in a wipe-out.
Well time to go and play
I should have a vid of it this week
Have fun and keep modding make it bigger , better and faster.

Lorduss 01-04-2010 07:46 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
very nice yet again, nice tensioner system also.
Are the knuckles custom machined also? i dont rember if those are stock new brite.
looks like a winner, hope to see some deep powder shots, now you just need some real lugs on that track.
If im not mistaken that motor is about the same exact size and 100+ kv of the MMM motor, looks like your doing motor testing for me lol =) i was planning on going with one with a little less KV, that 2300 at most.
do you have a total weight of that rig ready to go? im realy courious

hurricane-fibers 01-05-2010 01:55 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled

Yes the knuckles are custom made from 5/16 tube and they are 3" inch long with out the the rod ends.
since this post I have added 1 more knuckle to the sled just to help beef it up.
next I am added pivot arms to keeps the ski's in line throughout the suspension travel I will post pics when this is done and tested.
The medusa and the mamba are almost the same size motors I was thinking of testing the 2650kv mamba monster that would make this thing nuts.
I have done some testing and its got so much power I can drift the sled in the parking lot with about 2 to 3 inchs of snow what a blast.
Should have some vid this weekend I will get the total weight of it RTR.

Talk soon

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Great build, I love the custom lathe and mill work. Can't wait to see a video.

hurricane-fibers 01-13-2010 03:44 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok just a little up date here

Well I didn't like how weak the front arms are so I had to do something about it.
here is a few pics of what I have changed I have a lot more clearance for deep snow now.
I should finally have some video of it this week end.
Just need to stud the track so I can get some traction.

let me know what you guys think of the improvements.

dudecat 01-13-2010 09:40 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
I think it will help alot and will defently give you some more stability for high speeds. Keep us posted.

EvilSage 01-13-2010 11:30 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
All I can really say is DAMN! I can't wait to see her run in the snow

hurricane-fibers 01-28-2010 02:43 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok guys here is a little video of testing after work.
Never got it full out but close, didn't bring any tools and the belt needs to be tightened but you get the idea.
I will have better video of it this weekend.
this was filmed at 3am LOL and it was -14 C so I didn't stay out long.
let me know what you think

EvilSage 01-28-2010 03:14 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Iwould say it's worth a 5 star rating in youtube, thats nice and quick, gotta find someone with a radar gun hehe

Lorduss 01-28-2010 06:44 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
are those shocks in front 1/10 or 1/8 ? they look like crawler shocks of sorts, nice vid.
i like it to see it fly like that, you should try and fit a hero cam on it lol get a in the eyes view

went out into the back hills yesterday, got my self stuck 5+ times, a foot of wet snow on 3 feet of dryer snow, ment for stickin! lol
i keep getting upto the hills at 9K feet and thinking, damn i need a RC sled around here.

hurricane-fibers 02-03-2010 05:22 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok guys here is a little testing again

This time I put the cam on the roof of my truck so you can get a better view

Sorry not enough snow this time and there are big chunks of ice all over the place so yes I have a few wipe-outs
Hope you enjoy, next video I will get someone to hold the cam.

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fjlqvvm98X8&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Fjlqvvm98X8&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

just incase it don't work for some people

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Very good video .. [X(]

This hurricane-snowmobile, has received very good mods, the result is there.

hurricane-fibers 02-11-2010 07:10 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Ok guys here is what I have been up to.

I call this one BIGRED

I have refined the front suspension so that now there is no toe-in or toe-out as the ski's move up and down.
Also they lean when the sled leans in turns, put a small bend in the main arm to keep the spindle straight at all times.
This is my new gear-drive set-up I am using the spur gears from an e-max the main drive gear is 68 and the idler gear is a 58 the pinion is 18,
I only had to make a small cut for it to fit under the light support I wanted to be able to use the factory mounting for the hood and the lights that is why I did it this way.
I have also done a little bit of tweaking for the rear suspention now all the bolts are countersunk and all holes have been beveled, I wanted it to be cosmetically pleasing
so it will show just how much work has been put into it and well besides the end result looks great LOL
Well all I have to do now is hook up all the lights take it for a test run (don't worry I will get some video) and ship it off to Drew.
This is number #2 I have built for him now.
I have made 10 sets of the front suspension I have 1 left if anybody would be interested let me know.
Well I bet you want to see the pics now right ??????
Ok here ya go

Let me know what you guys think of the new improvments

EvilSage 02-11-2010 11:15 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Wow that looks great, the suspension looks like it would handle great, why did you go with gear drive this time instead of belts though?

hurricane-fibers 02-11-2010 02:46 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
I went with a gear drive this time because this way if someone follows my building they will be able to get the parts they need from any local hobbyshop.

hurricane-fibers 02-14-2010 06:40 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
Here is a test of the bigred sled I have just finished it.
I can't get any traction I'm trying to make it drift like my own sled does.
Now this one is only about half the power of mine and I am still not going full out.

Well Drew hope you like this one :) (this is the other sled I have built for him)

If there is anything you would like to know just ask

EvilSage 02-14-2010 07:06 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled

ORIGINAL: hurricane-fibers

If there is anything you would like to know just ask
Can Ihave it? lol j/k that is a great looking and running sled would love to see a race between this and your yellow one, which do ya think would win?

neyou86 02-14-2010 07:48 PM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
how did you mount the spur gears to the shaft?

hurricane-fibers 02-15-2010 03:04 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled

My yellow one has twice the speed as this one, so i think the yellow one would win LOL

I mounted the spur gears using all custom machined hubs I have made.

neyou86 02-15-2010 09:13 AM

RE: hope 50 mph rc sled
ok. any other idea how to mount them?

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 06:35 AM.
