Lest We Forget: 11-09-1989
Twenty years ago today the Berlin Wall came down which sparked the fire of Liberty which quickly spread throughout Communist controlled Eastern Europe.
Sadly, the horrors of socialism have not only been suppressed but glorified. The Nation that did more than any other to light the torch of Liberty around the world is in danger of extinguishing her own flame.
Without Freedom, without Liberty the only tanks we'll be seeing are those which keep the worker obediant to the State.

And which one nation is that? England? Canada? Australia? New Zealand? Surely you don’t mean Scotland, West Germany or France

Swathe,
Your statement is wrong, shows a lack of knowledge save for that of a brain washed individual and you show complete contempt for any nation save your own, if you feel that your nation is in “danger of extinguishing her own flame” then it’s through people like you and your extremist views.
I bet you think George W Bush had an exemplary foreign policy

The Statist always reveals themselves in debate. Unable to refute facts, they first resort to personal attacks.
Rivetcounter this is not the venue for a foreign policy or ideological debate. Choose your venue; whether it be by private e-mail or some other forum and I will be happy to debate you.

I always wondered about how you espouse freedom and democracy but then buy a toy (Heng Long/Mato/Matorro) from a business that is controlled heavily by a communist government. [:'(] You can reasonably say that you are supporting a socialist government by buying from a business there. And yes that implicates me too (can we say Walmart), but I don't deny it.

Personally, I think Ronald Reagan AND Mikhail Gorbachev deserves a lot of the credit. Reagan dropped the diplomatic BS and spoke clearly and directly - despite the pleas of the Europeans and the US State Department. Gorbachev engaged with Reagan, tried to reform the USSR, and when that failed did not send in the tanks and open fire.
In those euphoric times after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Europeans talked about forging their own defense force, without the US. Then Bosnia showed how the Europeans couldn't even fight a war in their own back yard without major American involvement.
I have a lot of respect for individual Europeans, but too many have sat behind America's shield for too long, and have forgotten the true price of freedom. After the horror that was WWI a lot of Europe wanted to avoid another costly war, so they appease Hitler, and look what it got them. Later many did not want to confront the Soviets. Luckily Reagan did. Today it is the Islamic Fascist, but the EU response is predictably the same.

I hope that as the cost of living/disposable income rises in China there will be a corresponding desire for more personal freedom and the eventual fall of communist there. I'm sorry James that I came on strong, I just think we should be careful what we write or say because someone can show us our blind spots and sometimes that is unpleasant. And before anyone can call me liberal, I am a republican and a veteran.
