Am I part of the gang now? Plane looks great, sitting next to my WM Patty Extra I can't believe how HUGE the wings are, the wing area is enormous. It's only a 4" span difference but the WM looks like a 60 now! I will be building it with a DA50, Hitec radio equip., MPI power systems, and some carbon stuff from Troy Built. Anybody interested in a build thread?

I'm hoping it will grow and shrink at the same time! (trying to build it light) Well here I go... the other day the box showed up with two fist-sized holes in it. Not a good way to begin. I opened the box and found a little damage, one broken stringer on the bottom of the fuse and a covering rip. After I was done cursing UPS, I calmed down and decided to fix it rather than burden everyone at WH (not to mention myself) with UPS claims, a bunch of messing around, etc.

Default RE: Got my 28% WH Extra 300LX!

Backing up a bit... I'm relatively new to giant-scale aerobatic planes, and have only been flying 2 years. ( I am a 37-year-old, bald QQ Somenzini wannabe) This season I have basically ignored my glow planes (still love my foamies tho) and am flying a World Models Patty Extra with a Brison 40cc engine, practicing the IMAC basic and Sportsman pattern pretty much everyday. I live on a farm and just fly off a 1/4 mile long driveway. I have about 5 gallons run thru the WM Patty so far, close to 17 hours of flight time. I bought the WH Extra based on everything I read here on RCU, and having seen a few at the local flying fields. I intend to compete with it next year, using it as my primary IMAC plane and having the WM as a backup. Just wanted to point all that out so that anyone who reads this knows where I'm coming from, some context to whatever statements about the WH I might make. IE, I'm a noob, and my opinions might be whacked. Anyway, back to the build.

I dry-assembled the plane to see how the wing/stab tubes lined up. According to the eye and some basic work with a bubble level and tape measure, it all looked good! The covering has quite a few wrinkles, but I figure it was humid overseas, dry in TX, and it's humid here... things are gonna expand/shrink, it can't be avoided. Some work with a heat gun will snug it right up. Shown below is the hardware kit I purchased from WH. Dubro tank and wheels, axles and collars, a gas tank stopper, etc. The control horns appear to be Rocket City or replicas. Some carbon rod and 4-40 allthread were also provided. It's a complete hardware kit, and should do the job just fine, but being a hardware freak in another life I sorta wish now that I had pieced together my own stuff. In particular I wish I had the Dubro control horns with A-nuts to snug down onto the control surfaces, and a smaller/lighter tank. No big deal, however.

While waiting on the plane to arrive, I placed an order with Troybuilt for carbon wing/stab tubes, Kavan 3.5" wheels, Graphtech main gear, some NX props, a Pete's carbon spinner, etc. They are great to deal with. I guessed I could save about a pound right off the bat with these items. Here are some weights as measured on my digital scale:

Stock aluminum LG 13.4 oz
Graphtech 8.0 oz
Savings 5.4oz

Stock stab tube 1.4 oz
Troybuilt .7oz
Savings .7oz

Stock wing tube 10.0 oz
Troybuilt 4.4 oz
Savings 5.6oz

Dubro wheels 4.3 oz
Kavan wheels 3.3 oz
Savings 1.0 oz

Delete wheel pants 4.0 oz

Pete's carbon spinner 2.4oz
Std. aluminum ~ 3.5 oz?
Savings ~1.0 oz

17.7 oz weight savings! Wheee!

The 300 LX is a great machine. It tracks straight and is rock solid in the air. You will like the way it flies. It 3D'S very well with the proper balancing. Here is a [link=http://www.wspromotion.com/300WH.avi]nice video [/link] of mine (Divx)

Sweet! I have the same plane I built as well. Gene is an awesome person to deal with and does a lot for the hobby! While Tom gets me the aweseome planes, Gene gets me the goodies go get everything going.

FWIW my AUW on my 28% is 15.5lbs.

Statements like those above have led me to where I am now.

Spent a little time on the canopy today, trying to make it look good, most of my attempts end up mediocre at best. Canopy glue seems to end up everywhere no matter how hard you try to keep things clean, so I used #4 screws. I found some neat little stepped nylon washers at the hardware store. I drilled pilot holes thru the canopy and into the frame, then enlarged the holes in the canopy with a 1/8" acrylic drill bit. The washers then "snap" in place. Turned out much better than my usual efforts.

I mounted the supplied 24oz Dubro tank (might swap for a 16 or 20) over the cg on the installed plate and secured it with zip-ties. I put a couple squares of friction tape under the tank to keep it from moving around. I routed the vent line down and out the bottom of the fuse using tygon and a piece of nyrod sheathing. I mounted a quick-fill valve underneath, behind the landing gear.

Tell me about it! On my first 33% 260 I had to recover the canopy hatch after the Canopy glue just dried so cruddy looking. I ended up just using screws. I have to take a picture of my canopies and how I do them on my Wild Hares. I paint the edges myself and they come out nice. Keep up the good work!

where did you get the music for your video?

Sounds like something from a soft porn flick on showtime or cinemax...

anyway is their coupling going on with the LX in knife edge or was that only rudder?

Default RE: Got my 28% WH Extra 300LX!

Despite interference from the real world, over the past few days I've managed to hinge all the control surfaces and install horns/linkages. I used Gorrilla glue on the Robart hinges, my first experience with it. Went well, I used white grease to protect the covering and pivot from glue squeezing out, the excess picked right off when dry. I am using the supplied 1" servo arms from Hitec, and set the control horns at 1", (to the hinge line, 'natch) for a perfect 1:1 ratio. The Hitec 5645's seem to center quite well... after I tightened up the sticks a bit on my transmitter, that is. The elevators will move around 40-42 degrees with the 1" arms, sweet! I set my low rate elevators to the recommendation of WH. I haven't measured my ailerons yet, but they appear to have plenty of throw for 3D with the ATV and DR maxed out. The rudder was easy to set up, I am using a Hitec 5955TG. What a monster! All the geometry is set up at a perfect 3.0" to match the servo arm I purchased from WH. Rudder cables are crossed to get the right angle out of the fuse. Plenty of throw. I have never used a servo so fast before, it flaps back and forth on the stand and makes air move! Perfect centering too. This servo is overkill, but can be used on a bigger plane in the future. If the 5645's don't work out, I can always use those in the baby Edge I intend to get one of these days.

I am going to make one small update to the control horns, I have the Dubro self-aligning horns coming. I wanted the extra security of having everything buttoned down the control surface tightly with no chance of loosening up. I could have just used 8-32 nuts and washers in the supplied hardware, but again... I'm a hardware freak and like the look of billet aluminum A-nuts better. 8|

That's about it for now... DA-50 on the way from WH, not much else I can do until that arrives. I CANNOT WAIT to get this thing in the air!

Hey Jhord did you check incidences on this airplane,, some are perfect and some are off by a couple of degrees,, I checked my Extra Special and it was a +1 degree off on the back right elevator,, doesn't soundl like much but it could make a difference,,

I don't have an incidence meter yet, on the "to do" list. I did check best I could with an angle gauge and everything looked good.

Other wieght saving thoughts:
1. YES, swap the tank to at least a 20oz. The key thing is you will save 4oz just in unused fuel load.
2. Trim the floor of the cocpit section out. leave just enough to keep some structural strength. I think I saved 2.5 oz here.

SO there's 6.5 more oz's

I was thinking about trimming the hatch but I'm kinda waiting to see what IMAC does about the pilot rule. Looks like you could trim everything inside the reinforcement. I have a 16oz tank on order. I can fly 20+ minutes agressively on about 12-13oz on my Brison 40cc, so 16 oz should be plenty for 15+ minutes on the DA. But I suspect the DA might get better fuel economy than the Brison because 1) the wing loading is so much lower with this plane/engine combo than my WM Extra and 2) I won't have to fly with the throttle firewalled so much. ??

EXTTA 300 planes means as in ugly extra ugly //////// your not ready for high performance planes. For those of you reading this ..Your a typical power jockey that likes to throw his money around to impress all the guys at the field.. You have no real understanding of airspeed just look at how you land,......not pretty...and your negative to any other type of flying bascially one of the jerks.. I belong to a large power club with 330 members in Texas i Know the type...you look down on my glider ,, then you all have the same idiot story about how you had a glider once...and it stayed up for 3 hours the first flight yeah right..then you said well i only used a motor to get it up there...what a joke thats not gliding ..you are liars as well as negative losers ...by the way my Ninja aileron equipped glider does an inverted snap roll after launch as well as a rolling circle in a thermal...good luck Keith White

**** you rc universe you old fat ****s that have to get heart surgery....or a stint...youll never learn to fly..have fun with your dead end power plane hobby....thats your depth of challenge..

This thread is off to a good start. To be complete there should be some reference to the best thread for a builder: http://www.edge540t.com/pictures.html. Cut and paste this and you will have everything needed. This is so good , it should be included in Tom's manual.

thaus,
I couldn't get your link to work.

jhord,
I have an Extra Special on order, how many and what length servo extensions did you install? I'm trying to accumulate some parts while I'm waiting, Thanks.

If you get 4-24" extensions you should be good to go, if you mount the rx behind the fuel tank. You could probably get by with 18" on the wings... my 24" wing leads are a bit long but I am using those sticky-back cable tie mounts to tidy things up. If you don't want to unplug the wings from the rx everytime, then an 18" with a 6" would be the way to go, and you could break the connection between the leads instead of pushing and pulling on the rx everytime you pull the wings off. I'm just gonna mount the rx where I can easily get at it and unplug from it directly.

DA50 arrived yesterday, hopefully I'll get it mounted sometime this weekend!
