Default News and products 2. New planes coming!

Hello again:

Our product line is being updated effective in late September, with 4 new planes. All will be fast-build with very little work required to get the plane in the air. Fast build means pre-hinged, canopy pre-attached, and firewall marked to use a template so engine mounting is very simple.

We have two new offerings in the 35% class.

We are finally releasing the 35% Edge at 102.5" wingspan. This plane has been tested extensively and is a great airplane. It uses a single aileron servo per wing fo economy, and is perfect for the DA-85, DZY or DA-100, or any engine in that range.

Also new is the Extra 260 105". This is actually a derivative of the 105" Extra 300, some minor changes have been made but the major difference is the smaller canopy and longer turtledeck. It will still have the pocket hinges, and the wings are set up so you can use either one or two servos per wing like our Giles is, this has proven to be a great setup.

In the 50cc class we have two new planes. The 84" Extra 300 has been changed to an 87" Extra 260. It's still basically the same airplane and most parts will interchange, but lots of people like the looks of the 260 and slightly larger wings make it more up to date. Same color schemes.

We also have a new 88" Edge 540, also a derivative of the 84" 540T. Same reasons, small canopy and larger wings, and a new color scheme. The 84" Edge 540T is NOT being dropped, it's our most popular plane ever and will continue to be available.

We are dropping the included wing bags. They tended to drive the cost up and most people didn't seem to really want them. You can still purchase bags separately.

Tom: Sounds very exciting, any idea on the price of the 35% Edge 540? What scheme did you decide on?

Regarding the wing bags: at first, I thought they kind of cheesy. But working with them, once the wings were done and were going in and out, I now feel that they are worthwhile. I do keep the wings in the plastic bags, because the velcro closures are rough as hell and will eventually scratch the finish. This is a minor annoyance, but with a decent wing bag going for fifty bucks or more, I can put up with a bit of inconvenience.

A nice touch, IMO.

Tom, what's the overall length of the new 50cc Extra?

No pictures yet.

The 50cc Extras will have the same scheme as before, fuse length is the same. Will be red/yellow/black and white/red/blue.

The 50cc Edges will be in the same scheme that Bill Hempel used on his 50% Edge, photo below.

100cc Extras will be in 2 schemes; A slightly modified flame scheme as we had on the 41% Extra, and also what I call a "Red Bull base" or RBB. The RBB scheme is dark blue on top, light gray on the bottom, with a yellow cowl and hatch. I call it Red Bull base becase it is an ideal base scheme to add red bull graphics, or some other graphics scheme.

100cc Edges will also be in the RBB without graphics, and we will have a version with "Austin Powers" graphics applied, sort of a "Royal Hare".

Other ideas for graphics to apply over the RBB scheme are welcome.

That's cool Tom......I'm really diggin' that Austin Powers scheme!! This past 8 months or so has been really tight with money for me. But i finally got my business license all squared away , and the money thing is doing really well now. So.....first goal , would be to get the big sukhoi going , then i'm looking at getting a 100cc sized extra......and i think this new one of yours just topped my list! Weight wise , even though 3" wider than the 102" sukhoi......will it be about the same weight with the same equipment? maybe lighter? I think she would be a great DA-85 build.

I've thought about that, there's stilltime to change but it depends on whether we have enough material to do some in that scheme.

Here are some better pictures of the Royal Hare scheme as it is applied to a 105" Extra 300. The only change will be to make the blue midnight blue instead of metallic.

BTW this plane is for sale, see my specials page.

Tom: I've been flying the heck out of my Wildhare 33% Extra 260 for the last 3 years, this has been a great flying airplane, but it won't last forever and I'm thinking your new 35% Edge would be a great replacement.

If you could put your thinking cap on for a minute and remember how the 33% Extra flew, how does the flight characteristics of the new Edge compare to the old Extra 260 and how good does the new Edge 3D compare to the old Extra 260

What are the specs on the new 35% Edge and approximate all-up weight with DA-85 and A123 batteries.

The new Edge is in most ways just a redesign of te 33% Extra/Edge. It is a little larger and this easier to see, and has more wing area. Flight characteristics are quite similar to your 260 since the layout is identical. But you will find the structure easier to work with, it uses a single servo per wing which saves weight and cost. The cowl uses a cowl ring so it looks much better. The structure is lighter but still strong, I do not subscribe to the "weight is everything" mentality. Weight is important but so is durability.

The Edge I was flying came in at about 24 lbs. with a DA-85 and canister, a Pitts muffler would save almost a pound. I have flown 26 pound planes on the DA-85 with spectacular results, so this new Edge is quite impressive.

I also would like 2 c pic s of the 260. I'm in the market 4 a competition plane 100cc or larger[sm=confused.gif] and love the wildhare hinges. Let me refraze that hate to glue hinges lol!! Some guys at the field let me fly there 50cc extra and edge, and i liked them both.Great job wildhare excellent flight characteristics. Very little mixing need for high alpha knife edge flight and almost none for regular knife edge flight. But I still like the 260 slinder looks best. If it looks anything like the 41%er with flames im in. [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

The Extra 260 will be available in the flame scheme and another one. It will be exactly the same as the Extra 300 105" except the back edge of the canopy is moving forward to make it a single place plane.

I wish I had photos to show, but they have not started covering them yet.

I like that "Royal Hare" scheme. I would love to see that scheme, in the metallic blue but with red in place of the yellow on the 50cc extra![sm=thumbs_up.gif]

It seems like the bigger planes get the all the good schemes like the red bull sukhoi, the new royal hare edge, the tiger sukhoi etc, while the 50cc get left out.[]

This is what the new 88" Edge will look like!

The other schemes on the 50cc planes have been very popular, I see no need to change them. It's not possible to make everyone happy, sorry.

Tom: It's hard telling from the picture the actual colors, I assume it is True Red and Cub Yellow, is this correct. Also, have you found out yet if any of the 35% Edges will have that cover scheme?

You are correct about the colors. No, the 35% Edges will not be done this way, most of them will look like the baby Edge, a few in the Red Bull base scheme.
