I just purchased this plane with DA-85 and canister. The plane's covering is very tight. Wood work is perfect. I wasn't so sure about the colors, but went with the yellow and blue. Looks awsome in person.
I'm hoping for 26 lb's or less.....at 26 lb's the wing loading will be 27.6 oz/sq. foot*****light******

This will be a fast build. No control surfaces to glue or seal, premounted cowl, engine template!

Thanks Tom!

Tom, is this plane supposed to have a 4.5 or 5 inch extra spinner? I tried a 5 inch, but it seemed to big. Maybe its just my eye?

Tom, there is a mark on the firewall, is this for centering the engine and can i just use the da 85 plate you sent me on it or should i just do it the old way!! Just wondering how accurate the mark is? Also what color red is the ultracote(for painting the spinner). I have your 102 inch sukhoi and thought is was nice, but this plane is even better. Thank you!! Mark Anderson

As far as I know the mark on the firewall is accurate. We just did one using that mark and the template, I can confirm its accuracy latertoday when the engine gets mounted with the long screws.

True red.

Yes, it is a very nice plane. We will be offering a quick-build version for the DA-85 here very soon. It will have the hatch completely finished with panels and pilot, engine mount for DA-85 provided and all mounting done, mounts for throttle and choke servos installed, pushrods made, fuel system installed and a complete dry assembly and inspection done to be sure everything fits. And of course all the hinging is done with the pocket hinges.

PANZLFLYER, too late! I did it too! Hey Tom, what color blue please? I'll get some covering when I purchase some Ply to make a mount for my DA -85.
Thanks

Has anyone mounted a DA -85 on this airframe. Just looking for suggestions for the easiest and lightest way to do so. Looks like it will need to come off the firewall about 3 inches.
Thanks

I would love to have one of these to put all my gear from my 33%er in and this is how i did and would do the mount for the DA85

Ps i added a top and bottom plate to completly box in the stand offs. This is just as good as building out the fire wall.

ill get some pics of the redone version but i dont have any with the plates on the new stand offs so you can see what it loks like before you add the side plates.

Thanks Flatlandmike, I never thought about that. That would definitely be lighter than a plywood do-nut. I'll check on some titanium bolts that I've seen people talking about too. That should save even more weight!

Thanks again.

I'm thinking about providing cut-to-length mounting plates similar to yours, but with square pillars instead of dowels so there is more area to glue to.

Also I would provide just top and bottom. The side pieces block access to the carb linkage and needles.

That would be a nice thing to have pre made. I decided to go with the the dowel shape because i didnt think i could center drill the square stock perfectly and would end up with a side that was off and pretty bad glue joint. With the round dowel i can get a pretty good joint with out the sides being square to each other.

Also i was going to add 2 short tubes to guide my screw driver to the needles after i added the last side plate or just add a half plate to that side, easily done post build after every thing checks out.

The way to center drill a dowel or other long shape is to start from one end in the center and drill a little over half way. Then turn it over ans start again in the center. When the two holes meet in the middle, even if the bit has wandered off center they will be forced together into a single hole.

My DA-85 is currently getting the hub update, so I can't get exact measurements. I e-mailed two business about Titanium bolts but haven't heard back from either.
I'm a little timid about drilling dowels b/c I'm not sure I could keep the hole centered, but you never know till you try! That does seem to be the best way. **I'll purchase a lot of dowel for practice**LOL
I also have some 2 and 1/2 inch aluminum standoffs here and thought about putting a 1/4 inch plywood plate at each end and then boxing that up with 1/8 inch plywood. Would that be rigid enough? That would definitely be the easiest fo me.
I would box all four sides but open up the two sides a little for carb breathing and adjustment, or should I just open up one side to prevent carb pressure changes? I'm pretty new to all of this.
I trying to get everything in order so when vacation starts in about a week I can build it in a few days then go fly!

I used the mark on the firewall to mount my da 85 and the plate Tom provided me. The answer to the question of is the mark accurate enough to mount the engine is...........spot on!
