YS Engines...What type of fuel?
What type of fuel should be used in a YS engine? I have a 140L and a 110FZ. Below is a list of contradictions I have come across so far from owners manuals, web pages and fellow R/C'ers
1. Don't use 4-cycle fuel per the owners manual. Contradiction: Use 4- cycle fuel becuase it has more caster oil
2. Use at least 20% nitro. Contradiction: Don't use more than 10% nitro per Byron Fuels web page
3. 17% Caster in a synthtic fuel is enough caster oil. Contradiction: Must have at least 20% caster
4. Do not use 2-cycle fuel. Contradiction: Use 2-cycle fuel because it it NOT 4-cycle fuel.
5. Don't use synthetic. Contradiction: Use synthetic.
Look, I just want a fuel that is provides reliable, safe operation for a reasonable price, not looking to win any competitions................

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
The YS needs 20% oil and the more nitro the easier it will be to set. Most fuel manufacturers make a YS 20/20 blend. There are some that will tell you to use all synthetic and stay away from castor but a little castor won't hurt. The biggest pain with fuels that contain castor is they tend to clog up the regulator if you let them sit without running them completely dry.
The basic 4 stroke fuels are normally lower oil content than 2 stroke blends which is why you will see YS cautioning against it.

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
There is no fuel that is suitable for the YS engines. The only solution would be to box it up and send it to me.
Seriously, I think that you'll find most airplane fuels will be fine in the YS engines. YS recommends 15% - 20% oil, either castor, synthetic or a blend and a nitro content of 15% - 30%. Most airplane fuels fall into those ranges. Personally, I don't use any castor in my fuels because I don't like the burnt residue castor can leave on the motor and the way it gums up inside an engine that isn't used regularly. I use 30% nitro helicopter fuel in my YS engines. Depending on the brand, they have 20% - 23% oil and the engines run super on it. The higher nitro gives a little more power, makes the tuning easier and gives a great idle. I have never had a fuel related issue in my YS's using the 30% (100% synthetic oil) heli fuels.
Hope that helps rather than confuses you.

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
I use Morgan Cool Power Heli fuel, 30% nitro-23% low viscosity synthetic oil, in YS 110, YS 63, Saito 72, OS FS 91II; all idle well, transition to high speed without a hiccup, and run rich and cool. Cool Power Heli Fuel is recommended by Troy Newman for YS engines; he also notes castor oil should be avoided in YS engines as it gums the regulator.

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
I blend my own using 20% morgans 100% synth. oil, methanol, and nitro from 20-65%. Castor does burn differently and tends to build up on the exhaust valve and can cause issues if the motor sits for awhile. Since switching to the synth. oil my engines have become a lot easier to tune and have had a lot less problems.
Most people seem to be very happy with the results from a 30% nitro/20% oil blend on the 110 to 170 size motors. For sport flying I mostly use 20% since it keeps the cost down. For racing I run in the higher range on my 110's and 120's.

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
Thanks everyone for your opinions. I am thinking YS 20/20 may be what I give a try. Is there anyplace you can buy it on line for a good deal?
thanks again

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
I was told that 15% nitro would work, especially after a few gallons of fuel have been run through the engine. My plan was to get a couple of gallons of 20 or 30%, then switch to 15% and run everything on the same fuel.
I got to the store and bought 4 cases of 10% and 4 cases of 20/20[8D]

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
I just picked up two gallons today and paid about $26/gallon each. I can't believe it costs that much to make a gallon of this stuff but I guess that is the way it goes if we are sticking to glow engines

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
If it would ever stop raining here in Mayland I would go out and test out this new Wildcat YS 20/20 fuel. It has rained every day for the last week at least. I am hoping for a more consistant needle valve setting, it seems every time I run my 140L I have to make an adjustment to the needle...I set it then it goes lean for some reason and the second flight I have to richen it up a half turn

RE: YS Engines...What type of fuel?
Finally got out this holiday weekend in some great weather to fire up the Wildcat YS 20/20 fuel. It works really well and I would recommend it to anyone. I ran it on my YS 110FZ and my YS-140L, I could really tell the extra oil helped because the exhaust was not as black as it was with Omega 15% fuel I was using before. Really ran smooth and sounded great. Now if it just did not cost $26.00 per gallon we would really have something to brag about
