YS Newbie Exhaust Question

Hello,

Earlier this year I had a YS 120 SC rebuilt by Richard at YS Performance. I am planning to use the engine but I'm perplexed by the exhaust setup. This is the 'pipe' that came with the engine. This can't be all there is, can it? What attaches here? Or, by some chance are these engines so quiet, this is all they need?

Dave, your engine will be quite loud using only the stack you have. Of course that will be influenced by your propeller selection. They do offer mufflers for the YS engines that work well but I have found that they can be troublesome to keep attached to the engine. Some guys have no issues while others can't keep the muffler on the engine to save their lives. There are the very expensive canister and flex header setups that may not work for your particular airplane. I have a Reed Falcon with a 140 DZ that I installed a Hatori flexible header on and simply run it to the bottom of the cowl with a Dubro Exahust diflector and was surprised how quiet it is. I run a three blade 16x10 on it which keeps the rpm down below 8,000 which helps.

There is a "bulb" style muffler that uses two set screws to hold it to the header you have pictured. It takes some of the bite out of the exhaust but is not all that quiet. I have a pitts style muffler that came with a 120NC I bought at an auction. I've never used it. If that would help you out I may be persuaded to sell it.
