ZDZ 80 Not developing expected RPM
I was tuning my ZDZ 80 RV last night following the instructions that are on the RCS website. I was only able to get 5750-5800 RPM…
My setup:
• ZDZ 80 RV – Purchased new 3/2005 has about 20 gallons through it.
• Supersonic Pitts muffler
• Trumpet on the intake
• NX 26x10 Prop
• 93 Octane gas mixed 40:1 with Mobile1 MX2T
• Spark plug gap .20 per manual
• Timing is fully advanced (Sensor is all the way to one side)
I tuned the low end so it wouldn’t bog down in transition.
Then I started working on the high-end. I richened it until it started running rough then I started leaning it until it hit the max then started losing RPM.
Once that happened I richened it back to the max + 1/16th of a turn rich.
The engine sounds really good. It starts easy and runs strong… It has never deadsticked on me in over a year flying it… Well over 100 flights…
I am wondering if the temperature could be the cause of the lower numbers? It was probably 97+ at the time.
Before tuning it this time I believe I was running fairly rich…
If anything, what are some things that could try to get better performance such as change mixture, spark plug, timing, prop?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,

RE: ZDZ 80 Not developing expected RPM
Keep in mind a 26x10 is alot of prop for an 80, especially a wood prop.
We now carry the ZM 26x10 carbon prop which is awesome on the 80. It will free it up and get it up into the power band. Yes, heat is bad. Especially if it is 97F ambient. Please monitor CHT. It should not be above 230F max.
Keep me posted.
Thanks,
