Hi,

I've got a brand new ZDZ40 which I'm setting up for the first time. I can get it to start pretty easily, but it only runs for a second and then dies. Here's my starting proceedure :-

1. Ignition off
2. Choke the carb and open the throttle half-way
3. Flip it over half a dozen times
4. Unchoke the carb and return throttle to just above idle
5. Ignition on
6. Flip it and it starts

I can start it really easily, every single time, but it only runs for a second or two and then just dies. I've tried:-

Leaving the throttle at different positions (upto half way, no more).
Starting the model with the choke still on and off.
I've leaned the L needle 1/8 turn

None of the above make any difference to starting - it will always start - really really easily. It just won't stay running. I've just the fuel line and there are no bubbles in the fuel line after it stopped. As it runs up it sounds great and doesn't splutter or anything, just a little smoke, just as you'd expect. I currently have a Bolly 21x8 on it and the battery is good.

I'm sure it's something simple but I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your set up to lean. Try opening the low end first.

OK, well the L needle setting is at it came from the factory because taking my adjustment into account and counting the clockwise turns to tighten it, it was exactly 1.5 turns out.

I've now set it 2 turns out and it runs fine now.

This is only my second gas engine and I knew they were very sensitive to mixture adjustments but I never thought that 1/2 turn would be the difference between success and failure. I knew it was something simple but I guess I just put too much faith in the factory settings - but when things aren't working then you go with what you have and if the instructions say 1.5 turns then that is where you start.

OK, one last question :-

My engine start easily from cold and runs great. However, restarting a warm engine is a nightmare.

Whether I stop the engine by closing the throttle or killing the ignition, I can't get it start up again. If I leave it for 15 minutes, it will start again nice and easy. Seems like it might be flooding when I stop the engine. Excuse my ignorance, but is this a symptom of maybe running a little too rich?

Any ideas or tips to avoid flooding and make restarting easier?
