Default ZDZ 80RV New Carb

Ok, I have been pulling my hair out trying to fix my Walbro WJ-38 carb on my ZDZ 80RV. I have rebuilt it and checked it over and over without fixing my problem. So on that note I called ZDZ and they do not carry the WJ-38 anymore. I also searched threw the net and found nothing. Now the nice lady at ZDZ told me the WJ-71 will work fine. I noticed the 71 has a larger Venturi, 18.25 compared to my 17.46. What can I expect from this new carb is my question? Will I have many issues switching to this larger carb? Thanks......

gapple12, I used to have the old BING carb on my 80RV and it was a pain to start. I got the WJ71 fron RCShowcase and all the problems wth the engine went away. It starts easily and it is easier to adjust. Now the 5-5-1 starting method works like clock work.
If I remember correctly the throttle and coke levers are in the same place as the old carb (please correct me if I`m wrong)
You won`t be dissapointed with the walbro 71. JM2C.

About 70 bucks. The engine spins a mejzlik 26x10 at 6400 rpms and starts easy.

Are you using a regular muffler or pipe/can and getting these rpms ?

I also find my engine is hard to start.

I`m using the Supersonic pitts muffler that I ordered with the engine. A Menz S 26x8 runs at 6700 rpms but I like the way it pulls better with the mejzlik 26x10.
the walbro 71 makes it easy to start.

my son's ZDZ Super 80 is a ***** to start too, I asked him to check and see what carb is on it. he has only had it since january and during a flight the spark plug blew out and stripped the threads in the cylinder. Has anyone ever heard of that happening before? Other than these problems it runs great, tons of power once it is running, I think the spark plug needs to engage more threads. ZDZ People need to look at this problem.

I have an older ZDZ 80RV with a Bing carb. It's the easiest starting gasser at the field. If you guys lean out the low speed needle to optimum then it will be a little harder to start. Try opening the low speed about an 1/8 turn or a little less and retry. The Bing carbs work great.

I read about your plug problem on your other thread and it's not a problem with the engine. The problem is the plug gets over tightened and it pulls the threads. The plugs only have to be tightened until the crush washer is crushed. If you pull the plug and you don't replace the washer, then you're asking for trouble. You're hounding on an engine that has an impeccable history, that produces more power and has less troubles than ANY other 80cc class engine.

How about the starting problem it's very difficult to start by hand the first time each day.
it acts like it burns off the prime each time it trys to start sometimes it takes 15 to 20 min.to start, very fustrating even some of the compitition guy's can't start it.

Richening the low needle will definitely help because I used to start after 6-6-1 but I tuned it according to a guide by mfuess and its working real good, no midrange burble, smooth transition etc but its now like 15-8-1 to start

Also, do a quick double check that the timing is right. It's on RCshowcases site.

I am DKMILLETTE'S son and the Super 80 does not have a crush washer in it. It has a ring that has a set screw to hold the ign. cap on. All the threads in the head were fully engaged. The eng. top temp is 200 deg. within recommended temp. top RPM is 6200 RPM and swinging a Mejlik 27-10 CF with JMB Canister muffler. Just sent it in to Mike at RCS and waiting to find out what he can do for me...

The Super 80 and 80 RV have the same ignition plug cap retention system. Mine has a crush washer. Yours should too.

well I just sent the engine in to Mike at RCS so if there was suppose to be one he will put one in this time. It didn't have one on it when I got the plane and engine in Dec. and maybe that could be the whole problem on why the engine blow out the plug. I appreciate all you input you have given me. I also added to Mike about checking the carb and Ign. to see if something is set wrong for starting. I might just be me...

Thanks again.

My 80 doesn't have a crush washer either....I ordered a spare and no crush washer is included. The plug is made with a taper fit so it doesn't require a washer....

Thats what I thought. Thanks for confirming my sanity. The new design from what I understand does not require the washer for exactly what you saud it is a tapered fitting so no washer required.

Ok guys, I must apologize. I went out to the garage and pulled my plug. It also does not have a washer. It's my 85 3W I am thinking of, sorry.

Just got my Eng. back from RCS and Mike did great work on it and got it back to me in a very timely manner. He replaced the cylinder bucket and also replaced the Ireland Carb with the Walboro 71. Lets just say it starts reliably and runs really smooth... I think I might have a winner now.

Thanks Mike... I really appreciate your hard work and getting the engine back to me so fast.
