    Gluing tires like a pro

When I was 23 I got my first apartment; ah, the freedom of living on my own and dealing with the responsibilities of taking care of myself. I remember a few weeks after moving in, I was putting the finishing touches on a new 4WD off-road car that I just bought myself, and I did mention I was responsible right? As I sat at my workbench, waiting for the tires I had glued to dry, I sat back to admire my new car. Suddenly, I realized that warm feeling wasn’t actually me reveling in my craftsmanship, but CA glue bonding my left hand to the table on which it was resting. The bottle had fallen over and I had completely glued myself to my table! I realized calling for help would be pointless and my survival instincts kicked in, I needed to get to the bathroom to get my girlfriends nail polish to free myself from the unbreakable grip of the glue. Needless to say, I spent the next half an hour trying to maneuver the table with my hand stuck to it across a tiny apartment to get to the cure. Now I’m sure most racers have a similar story, so I’m going to show you how to properly glue your tires to the rims without getting your hands stuck on the tires or, worse, a workbench (it still gives me nightmares). We’ll be gluing up IMEX’s new Traxxas Sportmaxx ribbed front tires to standard RPM rims with Team Losi Tire glue.

    TOOL BOX

    • CA glue
    • Rag
    • Scissors
    • Motor spray or denatured alcohol

    PARTS BIN

    • IMEX Rib Dawg Tires w/inserts–7421, $25
    • RPM Standard Width Blue Chrome
    • Titan Wheels–81935, $17.95
    • Team Losi Tread Lock Glue–A-7880, $7.50
    • Trinity Buggy Blast–RC4443, $5.99

STEP 1: We can start by pulling the inserts out of the package or tires and let them come back to their natural shape; Mmm Donuts! Trim the outside edges off at about a 45-degree angle depending on the shape of the tires sidewall. Be sure to keep the scissors at the same depth all the way around the insert.
STEP 2: Turn the insert inside out and trim the edges off in the same manner.
STEP 3: Now put the insert inside the tire. Be sure that the insert is centered in the tire by sliding it left or right. This ensures the tire will not be lopsided when it’s on the rim.
STEP 4: With the inserts ready we will clean any oils off the inside bead of the tire with some motor spray or alcohol to ensure a good bond to the rim, we used Trinity Buggy Blast to clean our tires off.
STEP 5: Push the rim into the tire, you can pull up on the edges of the tires to help slide the rim in.
STEP 6: With the rim in position be sure the beads are in the channels on the rim where they belong and that the insert isn’t making any unnecessary lumps in the tire. If it is you will have to remove the insert and trim off the excess lumps that you might have missed in that spot.
STEP 7: No time for Playstation 2 now, you’re almost done! With the tire in hand, use your thumb to pull back the tire and apply the CA glue, we bonded our tires using Team Losi glue. You won’t need to goop it in there, just use enough to cover a portion of the tire’s bead, glue small sections at a time.
STEP 8: After you’ve gone all the way around one side of a tire, put it down to dry and do the other tire. It’s a good idea to always do the same side of the wheels at the same time, so that you know what is glued and what isn’t.
STEP 9: Finally, once the glue has set on one side, we can glue the other side of the wheels. Again, when done, put them down to allow the glue to set; just remember; don’t put your hand in a puddle of glue! That’s it, when the glue has dried, mount up your wheels and have fun!
