    Digital Power Recorder

The DPR is a powerful, lightweight, compact and affordable module for tracking and recording all the vital data you need to know while running your electric-powered R/C airplane, boat, or car. It tracks and records the actual in-use performance data of your electric setup, which can then be downloaded to a computer via the supplied USB interface to graph all the recorded data.

There are two DPR models currently available:

    • DPR-50 handles up to 30 Volt input (7s LiPo), and up to 50 Amp current load.
    • DPR-100 handles up to 30 Volt input (7s LiPo), and up to 100 Amp current load.

    Key Features:

    • Very small: 1.2 inches X 1.6 inches
    • Very lightweight: Approximately .9 ounces (25 grams)
    • Accepts wide range of voltage inputs: 7 to 30 Volts
    • Digitally records up to 9+ hours of mission data
    • Records and graphs in-use
o Current draw up to 50 amps
(up to 100 amps with the DPR-100)
o Battery voltage from 7 to 30 volts
o Power output up to 1500 watts
(up to 3000 watts with the DPR-100)
      o Amount of charge used
o Battery efficiency (voltage drop under load)
o Elapsed time of each mission
o Temperatures of 2 independent temperature probes*
    • Configurable
      o Data sampling rate
      o Recording trigger
      o Channels to record
o Computer graph displays with provided software
      o Recording resolution
    • Very easy to set up and use!

      * Dual temperature probes are sold separately.

Bench testing is good, but now you can affordably see what is happening while actually using your electric R/C craft in flight or on the track. The DPR simply plugs in between the source (battery) and load (ESC) and, when triggered, begins to digitally record all the vital data occurring. The amount of recording time depends on the sampling rate, number of channels and resolution you set to record.

The DPR includes a CD with graphing software, USB support files, and soft and hardcopy version of the user's manual
The Digital Power Recorder (DPR-50, or DPR-100)
also comes with a 3-foot USB-A to Mini-B interface cable
Jumpers are used to clear internal memory and the red/black wires automatically detect the source and load.

Typical DPR connection to battery (source) and ESC (load)

The DPR was designed so that it does not matter which red/black pair goes to the source or which red/black pair goes to the load. The DPR circuitry automatically detects the source and load. This is a nice user-friendly feature design by BNB Products.

    Accessories

The TMP-LED was designed to work with the DPR to track and record one temperature reading, along with an LED alert indicator to light when your DPR reaches thresholds you set for Voltage, Current, and Temperature.

If you are recording all channels and sampling at 2 times per second, the DPR will record over 60 minutes of data! It automatically separates each mission for independent viewing.

The DPR comes set to begin recording two seconds after it has been connected to a power source. Configurable within the supplied graphing software is the start delay time, data sample rate, resolution, trigger mode, channels to record, and alert settings.

The TMP-2 was designed t work with the DPR to track and record two independent temperature readings like motor or battery or ESC.

Connection into your system is a simple in-line hookup between the battery pack and ESC. The temperature probes can easily slide in between the shink wrap casing of the battery pack or ESC. The probe can also be taped to a motor case but this does not reveal true internal temperature.

    Graphical Display Example:

When viewing a graph, all the vital statistics of the mission(s) can be displayed. This includes:

    • sampling rate
    • time of each mission
    • max power
    • avg power
    • max current
    • avg current

    • max voltage
    • avg voltage
    • min voltage
    • max temp1
    • avg temp1
    • max temp2

    • avg temp2
    • charge used
    • battery efficiency
"Efficiency" takes the voltage output at the max current load and divides it by the max voltage recorded. This reading helps you to determine how efficient your batteries are performing under a current load.

To mount the prop and spinner, the first thing that had to be done was to ream the prop out so that it would fit over the second step in prop adaptor. I put the prop on the adaptor and then took the washer from the adaptor and put it over the prop upside down to help space out the spinner backplate. Even with doing that, I had to enlarge the prop cutouts in the spinner back plate so it would not flex. I did not use a washer between the spinner backplate and the prop nut since the adapter shaft was a bit short. There should be plenty of room for just the nut and it hasn't caused any problems.

    Summary

The Digital Power Recorder (DPR) tracks and records the actual in-use performance data of your electric setup, which can then be downloaded to a computer via the supplied USB interface to graph all the recorded data. The data the DPR records can be very useful in optimizing your setup for real world conditions. The ease of use is very simple and the graphing software makes interpreting the data a snap.

The only skills needed to ready the product are some proper soldering or crimping techniques to install the connector of your choice. The DPR does not come with power connectors due to the variety of connector choices on the market. This also helps to keep the cost down.

To gain more information on the performance of your battery pack, in-use motor current draw, or the temperature of the components in your setup, the DPR really make it easy! I am very impressed with this well designed, user-friendly tool that comes reasonably priced.
