    Official Tradeshow Coverage

Once again, I was back at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. The first year I attended as a racer competing in the U.S. Kyosho Mini-Z Cup, the second year as a product demonstrator, and this third time as a photographer on the watch for new and interesting products for RC Universe. Although some of the products may have already been shown at the remote control show in Japan with photos already floating around the internet, this particular convention is basically where the U.S. consumer can first obtain a personal glimpse into to latest products in the "RC Universe" of remote control and even try a few new model R/Cs hands on. Of course as a car guy, most of my interest was toward remote control cars.

One thing I look forward to when attending this particular R/C show is the off-road track constructed by "The Dirt Racing, Inc." On this off-road track, new R/Cs can fly through the air as well as crash and break on the ground. When it came to "The Dirt" off-road track this year, the vendors demonstrated new R/C cars as large as the 1/5th scale HPI Baja5b to as small as the 1/16th scale Kyosho Mini-Inferno Zero Nine 09. The HPI Baja5b is scheduled for release by the end of May. The Kyosho Zero Nine is scheduled for world-wide release on November 1, 2006. Of course, numerous vendors gave away products during the breaks. For the most part, many spectators probably didn't care if they received a free shirt or prize as long as they were able to see "The Dirt Girls." After all, what would an R/C "car" convention be without all the beautiful ladies.

The Dirt track layout did appear slightly too small for the HPI Baja5b and the Kyosho Zero Nine itself appeared rather small for the track. But remember, the Baja5b is a lot larger than the typical 1/8th scale buggy and the Kyosho Mini-Inferno Zero Nine is only a 1/16th scale mini-nitro buggy; that is correct folks, nitro mini. It also appears that a 1/16th scale nitro "buggy" class may kick off yet since there was also a Sportwerks Chaos at the Horizon booth. Unlike the recently released IRC Vulcan 1/16th scale nitro mini-buggy and the soon to be released Kyosho Mini-Inferno Zero Nine, the Chaos reminded me of photos I have seen of the Piktor Kiwi, especially with the particular fuel cap. Team VTX was also present and plans to release a 1/16th scale, which in my opinion appears similar to the IRC Vulcan. Team VTX was also taking pre-orders and plans to release a 1/16th scale nitro truggy. To me, this means competition, allows the consumer a choice, and hopefully, offers the consumer a better price for a greater quality remote control model. In addition, such mini-nitro may help bridge the gap between the people who run electrics, minis, and nitros. Hopefully, this will attract more attention to the hobby as well.

Eighth scale R/C cars ruled the off-road demonstration track and of course, the spectators didn't really seem to care what scale crashed as long as something remote control crashed, broke, or at least made some noise. One highlight for me was when a 1/5th scale HPI Baja 5B crashed into me. It's just too bad I didn't capture that photo, or at least obtain a copy for myself, and get to keep the buggy. Apparently, it was a "catch and release" program. There was also an 1/8th scale off-road buggy race in which the same winner of the 2006 Silver State Nitro Challenge once again took the lead spot and this time, took home the cash award. The Dirt Girls also provided some support to the winner. Quite frankly, I'm not sure what motivated the drivers more: the monetary prize or the Dirt Girls.

Behind the scenes or rather behind The Dirt offroad track, the Dirt Girls were also having fun as were some of the factory drivers and spectators. RCP Tracks, Inc. had once again outdone itself by creating a "rock crawler" track which smoked, glittered, and seemed to ooze lava from its volcanic core. To me, this was something new, rather exciting, yet relaxing for the most part since "crawling" is much slower than the typical modified Kyosho Mini-Z racing held on RCP Tracks, more relaxed than off-road racing, and still fascinating to watch as the suspension of the rock crawlers moved and twisted over the Dirt Girls, oops I meant the RCP Track volcano. Sorry guys, no photos of the crawlers working their way over the Dirt Girls though there are photos and video of the rock crawlers on the track. I did hear something about a possible video being released later. Either way, the track was fun and the obstacles a trip.
